Tasman Keith shares new single ‘CONFIDENT’; announces forthcoming debut mixtape 19 Nov 2020 7:39 PM (4 years ago)

Off the back of two sold-out shows in Sydney and the 2020 J Award for Best Australian Music Video Of The Year overnight, ascendant Bowraville-born rapper Tasman Keith today shares his latest single, ‘CONFIDENT’, and announces the forthcoming release of his debut mixtape To Whom It May Concern due this year.

Muscular and minimal, ‘CONFIDENT’ leans into the trunk-rattling, bare-bones style of previous single ‘BILLY BAD AGAIN’. With twisted, nocturnal synths, skittish percussion, and a late beat switch leading to a raucous, half-time climax, ‘CONFIDENT’ is not the first time Keith’s music can compare to Kendrick Lamar’s. What makes the comparison all the more apparent is Tasman’s finely-tuned craft; a flow that moves between leisurely, unapologetic aplomb and razor-sharp lucidity, oozing tenacity, perseverance, and an elemental self-assuredness no matter which gear he’s operating in. The result is goosebump inducing furore.

“Over the three verses in this song, I’m speaking to three different things,” Tasman shares. “In the first verse, I’m speaking on the confidence within myself. The second is me showing my confidence to the suits in the industry, and the third is showing it to racists/bigots. The third verse is also a moment where all three things are addressed in one verse.”

2020 has seen Tasman’s profile continue to rise through collaborations and guest features, appearing on Jimmy Nice’s ‘Same Water’, Northern Territory producer Kuya James’ powerful single ‘No Country’, including its own stripped-back version ‘No Country (Piano In F Minor)‘, and alongside Jessica Mauboy on ‘First Nation’, the second single lifted from The Makarrata ProjectMidnight Oil’s first studio album in over 18 years. Tasman capped yet another banner year with his debut TV performance twice on the second season of The ABC‘s live music series, The Sound.

Despite ‘CONFIDENT‘ being only his second solo release of the year this far, Tasman Keith continues to live up to its title – and then some.  ‘CONFIDENT’ by Tasman Keith is out now, buy/stream it here. To Whom It May Concern Mixtape out Dec 11.

Hooligan Hefs Drops His Hard-Hitting New Single And Video For “Send It!” 19 Nov 2020 6:34 PM (4 years ago)

Since his monumental breakthrough in 2019, Western Sydney emcee Hooligan Hefs has been redefining homegrown hip-hop with his street-ready anthems, trademarked with his own unapologetic flair and uniquely brazen style. A newfound pioneer of Australian drill, the Samoan/Chinese artist today drops his new hard-hitting, party rap single “SEND IT!”.

On the single, Hooligan Hefs notes “me and open till l8 cooked this one up over a year ago, when we made it, we knew it was a big tune, keen to finally get it out to the people. This is the song for summer, grab your drink, SEND IT! and party hard.”

The single also comes along side an epic new music video, directed by Jaen Collective. On the video, Hefs adds “we just wanted to have fun with it, so we pulled out the mailman idea, something different, but you know we had to still party.”

Dubbed the biggest rap act and breakout solo act in Australia for 2019, Hefs backed that up earlier this year by releasing his highly-anticipated and #1 iTunes debut EP, Living In SinThe EP saw Hefs delve into a more reflective and reserved side of his artistry, working with melodic vocalists and fellow Australian rising stars like Blueboy and Billymaree and UK drill favourite Dimzy of 67.

Now with five singles landing at #1 on the YouTube trending charts, over 70 million plays on Spotify, one ARIA Platinum record (“No Effect”), three ARIA Gold records (“The Party”, “Tell Em I’m Doing Eetswa and “IYKYK”), headline performances at Lost City, Meredith Music Festival and Spotify’s ‘A1 Live’ event and collaborations with global stars including AitchS1mba and Dimzy, Hefs is one of the few Australian rappers with proven worldwide reach. With the release of his new single “SEND IT!”, Hefs delivers yet another smash hit that’s best played at festivals, clubs and kick-ons, and one that’ll stay on repeat all summer.

With Hefs having been in the spotlight for just over a year, his achievements read like that of a seasoned veteran. But for Hefs, the best is yet to come.

Sophiya Channels Her Boss Alter Ego With New Single ‘Chief O’ Kief’ 10 Jul 2020 7:06 PM (4 years ago)

After making her long-awaited return earlier this year with the hard hitting ‘Rosie’, Melbourne rapper SOPHIYA is back for more this week with new single ‘Chief O’ Kief’. Originating from a freestyle recording she wrote last year, SOPHIYA pays tribute to her favourite recreational herb while also going deeper in her mission to personify self-empowerment with this latest single.

Over a deep, rumbling bass, she remains as formidable as ever on the mic as she effortlessly takes aim at Melbourne’s underground rap scene. Drawing inspiration from pioneering rapper Chief Keef, SOPHIYA explained, “Chief O’ Kief is an alter ego I created that runs the streets in the underground rap scene of Melbourne. The song pays tribute to my favourite recreational herb.”

Released alongside the song is another stellar visual from SOPHIYA, taking her on a wild trip down the rabbit hole thanks to a very welcome herbal surprise. “I thought it would be perfect to release a super chill music video during these uncertain times for everyone to enjoy and de-stress,” SOPHIYA said

SOPHIYA is always one to bring her community along with her, and this clip is no different. Teaming up with models Jassyyfizzle, Babygyal, Vanessa Librea and Iannah as well as linking up with formidable dancer Xavier Gibson once again, the ‘Chief O’Kief’ video also sees SOPHIYA work with previous collaborators 76m Films X Fun Films who she worked with on the ‘White Ivory’ video, as well as Johnny Yayo who directed the video for previous single ‘Rosie’. “I thought it would be dope to fuse their styles to bring together two of Melbourne’s best filmmakers.”

New single ‘Chief O’ Kief’ also sees SOPHIYA once again in the producer seat, working alongside rising Melbourne producer HAMLEY for added co-production flair. Also teaming up again with DOPAM!NE for mixing duties, ‘Chief O’ Kief’ is an exercise in SOPHIYA’s versatility, effortlessly switching up her flow without ever missing a beat. From the addictive hook that will be stuck in your head for days, to the playful, spitfire verses she lays down like it’s no big deal, ‘Chief O’ Kief’ puts her impressive lyrical prowess on full display.

From receiving love from triple j, triple j Unearthed and tastemakers Acclaim and Purple Sneakers, to unleashing a show-stopping freestyle for Red Bull’s 64 Bars series (which sits at 500K views and counting), SOPHIYA’s brand of empowered, bold and braggadocious hip hop continues to shake things up. And there’s still plenty more to come.

Jimblah drops new single ‘About these Demons’ 10 Jul 2020 6:17 PM (4 years ago)

First Nations artist and Blak Visionary Jimblah stops us in our tracks with ‘About These Demons’. Having worked for years in First Nations communities, as well as fighting structural racism in white spaces, this release is his most powerful yet, a furious, soulful cry for better understanding.

‘About These Demons’ drives home the grief, loss and dispossession experienced by First Nations communities at the hands of colonisers. Speaking more directly, lyrics like ‘Balanda Balanda y’all need an intervention’ and ‘y’all missed the message when you fail to see what you inherit’ ask white Australia to stop pretending things are getting better when it’s still business as usual.

What more can I possibly say, I’m exhausted. Running since I was 12, since I started noticing that the world was a very different place for me compared to the other kids. Running with a target on my back.

What these songlines represent is, we as First Peoples don’t want to see this happening, the difference is we aren’t able to just turn our backs on it. We don’t have that option. So we have to be active about confronting these demons, we have to activate in a way that is working towards this healing of Country. So many people claim they love this Country, but the truth is – they love to exploit this Country. If they really loved this Country, they would love us, & we would be side by side battling these demons together.

We need every single person who stands on this sacred Country to be activated, not just on socials, but at the dinner table, at the march, at the workplace, on the stage, in the board rooms, at parliament – that’s what true reconciliation will look like – when we are actually working together on this healing and it’s not just on the First Peoples to rid this Country of its on-going genocide and our beautiful way of being”.

Jimblah

With gorgeous, soulful production, Jimblah’s vocals and heart are front and centre on ‘About These Demons’. The track builds on a string of powerful releases from 2019 that speak to race politics within Australia including ‘No Clapstick’, ‘Black Paint’ and ‘House N***er’, each offering crucial guidance on the journey to decolonisation and highlighting Jimblah’s essential voice.

Freesouls Keep Delivering With ‘Living Legend’ Music Video 10 Jul 2020 6:08 PM (4 years ago)

Freesouls deliver yet another blow with the brand new music video from their recent single ‘Living Legend’. The film clip welcomes you into their South-West Sydney lifestyle when good times are ever present. Light hearted, homegrown and vibe friendly, Freesouls stay true to their music as it pays homage to their friends and family.

The video orchestrates that feeling you get when you just want to kiss your mum and say thanks after 3 beers. Dancing for a good time, drinking with your mates and getting up to date with happiness. Something we can all agree we have missed more than anything. The clip highlights what we are so eager to be a part of once again, making it so relatable.

From the moment it launches, you are instantly drawn in by the melodic hook that quickly paints a picture of gratitude of which is the group’s intention with ‘Living Legend“. World class production combined with varied but effortless vocals, makes for a great visual and a wave of nostalgia.

Living Legend is a special release for us as it’s an ode to those who have shared this journey with us from the beginning. Our family and day 1’s have been our biggest support.”

Freesouls

With proven versatility as a collective, together with their live show and recorded content, we are reminded that Freesouls are a group in love with their art and it’s hard to not get excited about the trajectory they are on, and with a debut EP slated for late this year, ‘Living Legend’ presents itself as the perfect breakthrough.

Triple One share new single ‘Loverose’, the first from their debut album 10 Jul 2020 5:20 PM (4 years ago)

Triple One has finally given fans a glimpse of their first full-length release. That comes in the form of ‘Loverose‘, a reflective yet triumphant single that continues to challenge the bounds of Australian Hip Hop.

Touching on sacrifice, the tentative nature of success, and what it means to achieve something in both their personal and professional lives, the new track contrasts these narratives with Elon Musk type exploration.

“Loverose is a song about the flawed nature of intimate love. Humans are an imperfect creation and also mortal. This makes love a lot harder, but also a lot more beautiful.

Marty Bugatti

Triple One’s debut album has no set date for release just yet. The release of ‘Loverose’ follows three EPs and a torrent of standalone singles that have catapulted the foursome to international acclaim, including their ARIA Gold-certified mental health anthem ‘Butter‘ and radio favourites ‘So Easy‘ and ‘Handyman‘.

Triple One’s notoriously chaotic live gigs include a sold-out national tour in 2019, and show-stealing sets at Listen OutHidden, and Falls Festival. ‘Loverose‘ by Triple One is out now, buy/stream it here.

Butter X A$AP Ferg X OneFour X Tapastry X Julian Cincotta “Eat It Again” 3 Jul 2020 5:55 PM (4 years ago)

Ready for the line up of a lifetime?

Well here it is! Before we get into the details, this line up has come together due to a recognition of the need to do more in helping create support systems and new opportunities for kids at risk and kids in the justice system. Particularly those from aboriginal and pacific islander communities, who are over represented in the justice system.

Butter, by way of Executive Chef Julian Cincotta, in collaboration with A$AP Ferg and OneFour have released a new sandwich in line with the recent OneFour track featuring A$AP Ferg – “Say It Again”.

The sandwich, developed by Butter’s Executive Chef, Julian Cincotta (@JulianVCincotta), is the OneFourFerg Burg – Butter’s first crispy fish fillet, with a Japanese boiled-egg and fermented garlic tartar sauce, tomato and lettuce on a steamed milk bun. Believe us, it is so good you will want to eat it again! But more importantly all profits from the sale of the OneFourFerg Burg will be donated by Butter to Tapastry, but more on them below… A little bit about this once in a lifetime line up…

(Keep an ear out for A$AP Ferg’s Butter references in his verse!)

A$AP Ferg – a man that needs very little introduction. Part of the A$AP family and an honorable part of the Butter Sydney Family. A$AP ferg was here in Sydney in early 2020, had a party at Butter and recorded this killer track with OneFour. (@asapferg)

OneFour – the Mt Druitt boys making waves around the world with their version of hip hop. Claiming the title of Australia’s first drill group, OneFour vividly rap about their harsh realities of life on the streets with confronting honesty (@onefour_official)

Tapastry – a Western Sydney based entity, with over a decade of experience designing and facilitates creative youth programs. Their aim is to utilise hip-hop to encourage positive change in the lives of young people in the Justice system and in community, utilising the skills of OneFour creatives to assist with developing workshops for young people. On this, MC Trey from Tapastry says “Historically, there has been significant research and impact evaluation into how hip-hop engages young people and the ability to work through complex issues and facilitate transformative experiences. This initiative will aim to build on this work.” (FB: Tapastry / IG: @treythelma)

This very special sandwich will be available from Tuesday 23 June to Sunday 5 July. This OneFourFerg Burg sandwich with a side of Butter’s famous laces will be going for $22 as dine in or takeaway or $24 via our delivery partners – UberEATS, Deliveroo and Menulog. It will be available from all 3 Butter sites:

Butter Surry Hills, Butter Parramatta and the Butter x Thievery pop up in Glebe – There will be limited numbers available each day, so make sure you get in A$AP! (see what we did there?!?!) BUTTER – IT – FORWARD

For the period that the OneFourFerg Burg is available, any sales of our Butter-It-Forward vouchers will be donated to Tapastry too. So even if you aren’t lucky enough to be close to a Butter site, you can still contribute to this great cause. These vouchers can be purchased via the following link here.

DJ Mix Of The Week: DJ Skarface Releases ‘Rage The Jewels’ 29 Jun 2020 6:19 PM (4 years ago)

Jonathan Stewart aka DJ Skarface has just released our DJ Mix Of The Week. Titled ‘Rage The Jewels’, Skarface has taken vocals from a selection of Rage Against The Machine tracks and mashed them over beats by Run The Jewels.

Originally this mixtape was made as a response the Rage Against The Machine/Run The Jewels tour announcement, not as a response to the events of the past few weeks. Having said that, there is no better time for DJ Skarface to have dropped this one.

I’m not equipped to speak on the matters at hand but DJ’ing and music have always done a good job of expressing how I feel”.

DJ Skarface

Having received a co-sign from el-p on Twitter, there’s no better tick of approval on that one. Spin the mix above and grab a download whilst you’re at.

Keep up to date with DJ Skarface here.

Spanian Releases New Single ‘The Six’ 29 Jun 2020 4:06 PM (4 years ago)

“I rapped in prison when it wasn’t eeets to rap in prison…”

Sydneys very own Spanian aka the Armageddon Don has just unleashed his latest single titled ‘The Six’. The underground rapper has been making waves with not only his raw and honest approach to music but also via a series of viral videos where he breaks down stories from his past and time spent behind bars.

His authentic demeanour has gained a legion of fans and headlines from some of the biggest publishers on the planet. The Six, produced by DAYTODAY is a slow paced head nodding joint packed with everything fans have come to expect from Spanian, killer tails from the street and a pair of fresh Asics, but it doesn’t stop there. In true Spanian fashion he breaks down why he’s a real g and leaves no one questioning his position.

You talking heart I am man down to my true fabric, you’re talking brands I am Gant down to my two Asics. I carry things in the streets that I do stab with, and actual back what I say, you just do ad libs”.

Spanian

Spanian has gone from strength to strength over the past year, and if The Six is anything to go by we’re in for some hectic new tracks on the horizon and hopefully a full album release soon. The Six dropped alongside a straight up street styled film clip, filmed and edited by The Last Addition. The locations on this one echo stories the Sydney rapper has shared in the past putting his city firmly in focus. Be sure to bang this one loud, you can keep up to date with Spanian here.

AUS To UK: Wombat Releases His Highly Anticipated Collab With Devlin 29 Jun 2020 3:44 AM (4 years ago)

“It’s the UK Killer with the Wizard Of OZ!”

Wombat’s back like he never left! Tasmanian rapper Wombat has teamed up with Dagenham legend Devlin on the highly anticipated and long awaited collab dubbed ‘Adrenaline’. After destroying Wrighty (remember Wrighty?) in Australia’s first ever grime clash, Wombat continues making moves forward on this massive AUS to UK link up.

The energy Wombat brings to all of his tracks is unmatched in Australia and Adrenaline is no different. Prod by PEZOTB, Wombat rides the menacing beat with a barrage of bars that would impress the hardest of emcees. Devlin, not to be outdone, uses his years of experience to compliment Wombats ferociousness with his well constructed verses and a technical takeover that hones in with the precision of a guided missile.

…All these cunts wanna claim they came from the guttah, you came from your mother cunt!”

Wombat

Even though Wombat has been around for a moment now, we feel this is just the beginning of what’s coming from The Bat. No word on an upcoming album just yet, but with the release of this collab we feel we’re on the cusp. With such a great outcome from their first collaboration, it’s hard for us not want to see a joint EP from these two in the near future. Who knows…

You can check out the visuals for Adrenaline above, filmed by AV Club/No1 Network & Risky Roadz. Keep up to date with Wombat here and Devlin here.

Right after summer officially hits, 6LACK (LVRN/Interscope Records) serves up his newest EP 6 PC HOT for the world. It features production from Timbaland, Fwdslxsh, Gravez, STWO, and more as well as one guest feature from Lil Baby. Aside from the music, he has a lot of news to announce as well.

Fans can enter an augmented reality chicken shop pictured on the EP cover via Instagram to view merch, including the hot sauce, tied to the project. It can be found by searching “6pc hot” in the IG filter search menu. A link to the filter is available HERE (to be opened on a phone). Once selected, a 3D shop will launch through the camera to share pictures and videos. The AR shop was created by Jackie Carlise, a 3D motion designer who recently graduated from School of The Art institute of Chicago. She created it using the Spark AR platform.

6LACK is running a number of special activations across both Atlanta and Los Angles. 6LACK also showed love to Australia by working with Butter who delivered custom orders of 6 hot wings. The first 70 fans (35 per store) received a special t-shirt. This box contained 6 of BUTTER’s crispy fried chicken wings covered in a one off hot sauce curated by their exec chef Julian Cincotta.

In addition to local fans in different parts of the world, 6LACK is looking to help aspiring Black entrepreneurs by presenting a handful of them with 6LACKCARDS. These will be Amazon gift cards to purchase any equipment and supplies to help get their dreams off the ground.

After 6LACK collected over 25K addresses in under an hour through his 6LACKBOX “6PC Scratch and Win” folder, he sent fans a classic scratch off lottery-styled ticket which they should receive this week. It reveals the tracklist to the EP, the date of release, and the chance to be one of the select few to win physical prizes.

The 6LACKBOX has also been updated with resources like voter registration tools and a contact sheet for Black businesses. A Black author history reading list and access to social justice reform information and participating organizations will also soon be available. 6LACKBOX was announced alongside his open letter to his fans regarding the social unrest stemming from the murders of innocent Black men and women. Inside the 6LACKBOX, you’ll find snippets of unreleased music, the East Atlanta Love Letter movie that he premiered at his album release event at Starlight Drive-In Theatre in East Atlanta, never before seen photos, and more. It will also contain some content leading up to his upcoming third studio album.

For those who still have cookouts to prepare for during the warmer months or also need a new hot sauce for the collection, 6LACK will be releasing his own hot sauce brand “600 Degrees.” It’ll be the perfect addition to your own 6 pieces of wings as you listen to the new project.

L-FRESH The LION drops new single ‘Mother Tongue’ 26 Jun 2020 12:50 AM (4 years ago)

L Fresh The Lion Drops New Single Reminding Us That Policing Of Language In Australia Isn’t A Story Of Our Past

Pulling no punches, Mother Tongue arrives as an honest recount of L-FRESH The LION losing the ability to speak his native language, his Mother Tongue. The track captures the experience of many migrant and BIPOC communities here in Australia and throughout the world, diving deep into the shame, grief and disconnect L-FRESH has felt losing not only his connection to his first language of Punjabi but to the roots of his culture.

Release of Mother Tongue is coupled with the announcement of L-FRESH The LION’s forthcoming album SOUTH WEST on July 17. The body of work will be a celebration of South West Sydney, the area that raised him and continues to inspire him. Levelling up in every possible way, listeners can expect L-FRESH The LION at his best on this album with sounds reminiscent of his personal heroes Kendrick LamarJ Cole and Talib Kweli. Like his heroes, L-FRESH is inspired by the community around him. SOUTH WEST, a homage to the place that raised him up, and a nod to the rise of his fellow Western Sydney artist, including the likes ONEFOURBecca HatchJessica JadeHooligan Hefs and A.GIRL.

Mother Tongue was written about my story with my native language, my mother tongue. As a kid, English wasn’t the first language I spoke. It was Punjabi. My experiences of being born within 2, sometimes competing, cultures meant I lost touch with my language. I lost my fluency because I was conditioned to think my language wasn’t cool. Mother Tongue explores my regret in letting my language go, and how I’m working now to relearn it so I can keep close to my roots”.

L-FRESH The LION

Flexing his ability to lay down hard-hitting bars with unmissable truths, Mother Tongue teaches us something new with each repeat listen. Flow and lyrical-mastery are at the forefront of this track. Exploring the politics of otherness, lyrics like “Nothing is sacred, even the tongue is gentrified” explore white Australia’s ongoing issues with exploitation and discrimination against Australians of non-anglo background.

While some may think the policing of language or banning of tongues is a thing of the past, scratch a little deeper and you can see this practice is still alive and well. Too often people are asked to choose between their culture and the ‘Australian way’. To adopt words, to soften their message, to ‘speak properly.’ Mother Tongue arrives today as a reminder that culture is to be upheld and celebrated.

Mother Tongue is out now via Elefant Traks.

Uno Stereo Drops New Beat Tape ‘Innerludes’ 25 Jun 2020 11:40 PM (4 years ago)

Multi-platinum, ARIA-award winning producer UNO Stereo today drops his debut major label release, a compelling collection of beats and collaborations dubbed ‘Innerludes’, available to stream now. Following his lauded production work behind the scenes with a multitude of hip-hop and R&B music’s biggest names including Khalid, Wale, Wiley, Kaiit, Denzel Curry and more, UNO Stereo delivers a typically stylish and richly textured set on ‘Innerlude’s, spearheaded by the instant energy of lead track “PLAYIN”.

UNO’s curatorial nature is on full display with ‘Innerludes’, as he deftly weaves chopped up vocal samples from close collaborators into beats featuring his rare taste in classic hip-hop, traditional soul, neo-soul standards and a modern electronica, held together by sharp attention to detail and impeccable sound design.

“’Innerludes’ is what happens when I get the freedom to create music that sounds like what I imagined in my head 20 years ago as a kid tryna make beats after school. Because each song is kinda like an ode to my idols, I think the tape sounds strangely nostalgic but at the same time distinctly unfamiliar. Maybe it was the product of being in lockdown but the little vocal chops that I scattered throughout each song became the soundtrack to how I felt this year.
The artists who I collaborated with, I’m proud to say are all Australian artists that are my homies. And I’m just a straight up fan of their art regardless, so it’s an honour to be in their company. The exciting thing about Innerludes to me is, it’s organically become the perfect segue into the next phase of music I have planned for later this year.”

UNO Stereo aka Nic Martin

As one of Australia’s most agile producers, UNO forgoes glossy productions in favour of bright textured grooves and local emerging talent. On “Vinny’s Interlude” frequent collaborator 18YOMAN provides the hazy, melancholic soundscape, as Jordan Dennis brings his syrupy lilt to the piano-laden beat on “Keynote Interlude”. Meanwhile, Majerle’s vocoder-treated vocals melt into the melody of “On My Mind”, and the magnetic funk of “Need 2 Say” heralds Ojikae’s powdery alto. UNO’s trademark innovative use of percussion keeps the dreamy collection upbeat, with primarily instrumental tracks “PLAYIN” and “Purple Tape” featuring as standouts.

Even without company, UNO reveals multifaceted tracks, with the kind of chopped up samples and crisp production that have cemented him as one of Australia’s best kept production secrets.

Trippie Redd Releases New Single ‘Dreamer’ In Celebration Of His 21st Birthday 24 Jun 2020 8:31 PM (4 years ago)

Trippie Redd is keeping busy in quarantine – in May he released ‘Excitement‘ feat. PARTYNEXTDOOR and also featured on the late Juice WRLD’s postmortem single ‘Tell Me U Luv Me‘. Today, the prolific rapper and singer shares his latest single ‘Dreamer’ in celebration of his 21st Birthday – out now via 10K Projects / Caroline Australia. Zane Lowe aired ‘Dreamer’ on his New Music Daily Beats 1 show and caught up with Trippie via FaceTime, check out the interview HERE

One of the most versatile and creatively daring artists in hip-hop today, platinum-selling rapper, singer and songwriter Trippie Redd has landed four albums in the Top 10 in the space of three years. With the November 2019 release of A Love Letter To You 4 —his first-ever album to debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart — Trippie offered up his most dynamic body of work to date, delivering a 21-track effort that amassed more than 125 million stream in its first week alone. The now–21-year-old Ohio native continually defies genre boundaries, embedding his melodic take on rap with elements of rock-and-roll and heavy metal to ultimately create a sound that’s wildly experimental yet massively appealing.

As he recalls, the urge to create his own music arose soon after his older brother, an aspiring rapper who went by the name Dirty Redd, died in a car accident when Trippie was 10. “I took his dream and did it myself,” Trippie says. Drawing much of his inspiration from the free-flowing style and inventive lyricism of Lil Wayne, Trippie began recording in his cousin’s basement and later relocated to Atlanta to further hone his skills, quickly landing a record deal with 10K Projects in 2017.

Since then, he has had a deep commitment to evolving his sound and to constantly create new music, but despite his desire to continually evolve, there are certain qualities that endure across all of Trippie’s music—most notably, his penchant for crafting songs that hit on a visceral level. “I like making timeless music,” he says. “You’ve got to think of a timeless concept—love, hate, anger, sadness—all that shit is timeless. And if you can make something without it just meaning one thing, people can feel it and turn it into their own. That’s what makes it timeless.”

Sydney Rapper YIBBY Puts the Visuals to Laid Back New Single ‘No Sweat 24 Jun 2020 6:11 PM (4 years ago)

Teaming up with regular collaborator Andy Bull, YIBBY reveals the vintage-tinged visuals for current single ‘No Sweat’ which premiered recently, illustrating the blossoming and quick breakdown of a friendship.

Once again the Ethiopian-born, South Sydney-raised rapper has teamed up with dynamic producing duo Clockwork Odyssey to create a funk riddled track full of swirling synths and a bouncing beat, as a bed for YIBBY’s signature animated flow. YIBBY explains the content saying “No Sweat is about not stressing while going through adversity or dealing with things and still celebrating the wins.”

Since its premiere on triple j’s Home & Hosed, ‘No Sweat’ was included in The Guardian’s Best Music for May.

Forever a melting pot of genres, YIBBY’s music always comes accompanied with coming of age tales and food for thought bars. His debut single ‘Woah’ came in late 2018 signalling the start of a rapid fire first year for the now 20-year-old which consisted of the Lost In Translation EP and a hard-hitting team up with fellow up-and-comer Raj Mahal.

Quickly gaining recognition from fans and media, last year he came in at #14 on FBi Radio’s Most Played Artists of 2019. He also left his mark on triple j’s Bars of Steel and FBi Radio’s Independent Play. Single ‘Folk’, pulled from his debut EP, was added to spot rotation on triple j, as well as full adds on triple j Unearthed, FBi Radio, SYN Radio, 4ZZZ and EDGE Radio, and spins on Beats Radio 1.

On the live circuit he’s cut his teeth supporting Drapht, Arno Faraji, Milan Ring and Kuren as well as performing a show-stopping set at Bad Friday Festival.

NYC’s Revenge Of The Truence break out their long awaited EP “H1N1” 24 Jun 2020 5:40 PM (4 years ago)

Revenge of the Truence’s MuGGz and Tay Dayne waste no time getting to the point on their hard hitting new EP, H1N1, produced entirely by frequent collaborator Endemic Emerald. They kick things off by landing a massive uppercut with the lead single, “The Outbreak,” and they never take a moment to rest until the closing track fades. It’s a signal of immediacy that coincides with the New York duo’s mission statement of keeping it moving with a steady stream of quality releases.

Since releasing their debut Rot4ever in 2015, they’ve dropped a staggering four albums and six EPs, with each building on what came before it. “The progression is what keeps me going,” Tay says of their strong work ethic. “Not only seeing how the music gets better and better, but also seeing people’s reception to our art.”

To say that fans and newcomers alike will be receptive to H1N1 is a massive understatement. There is so much to dig into and digest on this EP’s six tracks, whether you’re in it for Endemic’s grimy aesthetic, MuGGz and Tay’s quotable verses, or the tack-sharp songwriting. While tracks like “The Outbreak” and “H1N1” highlight their rapping chops, the duo really shows off their pen game on standouts “Trading Places” and “Major Way.” After all, there’s a good reason those tracks are among Endemic and Tay’s favorites. “They’re beats with bars and a message,” Tay says.

There’s a strong message running through the video for the title track as well, which is available for viewing today to coincide with the project’s release. ROT self-directed the visuals that center on footage from the H1N1 outbreak of 2009 and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. It’s a bit of a heavy watch, but it’s a poignant one as well as a grim reminder of where the world is at right now.

H1N1 is available now through all major digital retailers and streaming platforms via No Cure Records. The six track effort is also available on vinyl in limited quantities via Fat Beats.

Pistol Pete & Enzo, Return Stronger Than Ever With New Single ‘The Top’ 23 Jun 2020 2:55 PM (4 years ago)

Biordi Music is proud to present Pistol Pete & Enzo’s first new release under their label ‘The Top’. The new single, which goes by the same title – ‘The Top’ – is out now and is the beginning of a new journey for the Australian rap duo, who have returned harder and stronger than ever.

Pistol Pete & Enzo are well known within the industry for their raw and lyrical bars and ‘The Top’ remains true to their style while also showcasing a more diversified version of themselves. Through the new single it is evident that one of their greatest strengths in the Rap Game is the use of word play.

From one-liner puns such as “Put ‘em on the board cause they’re never gonna notice (know this)” to references from renown Disney movies, “if they’re lying (lion) about the king then they can get scarred,” the duo have no trouble piecing together sophisticated and unique lyrics. ‘The Top’ delivers a strong message of resilience and perseverance, an insight to their life and come-up as they make a significant return to the scene.

Pistol Pete & Enzo say, “’The Top’ is a track that showcases our versatilities in the current Australian rap game. Being in this game for some time now we’ve copped lot of love but also a lot of hate. In this track we are stating that ‘The Top’ is where we are heading regardless. This track is uplifting and has a feel-good vibe, but at the same time we stay true to our ways and we still talk our talk. ‘The Top’ is just the start of our new journey and in due time we will be there!”

‘The Top’ is released through Biordi Music, written by Pistol Pete & Enzo and produced by RELYT. Listen HERE

We Catch Up On Alerts Latest Track “Southside” feat. Purpose (Prod. Suffa) 23 Jun 2020 4:11 AM (4 years ago)

New Alerts x Greeley of THCtv film clip coming soon

Written by guest writer @thelessonlsn

Adelaide emcee Alerts has dropped his new single “Southside” via YouTube tonight featuring Purpose, produced by Suffa of the Hilltop Hoods, mixed by Simplex and featuring cuts by DJ Sanchez. The three-minute offering from the pair gives a full 360-degree insight into growing up in the Southern Suburbs of Adelaide, affectionately known by many as the Southside.

Per capita, the Southside of ADL has arguably produced more nationally prominent rappers than anywhere in Australia with the likes of Hilltop Hoods, Delta, The Funkoars, Terra Firma, Prime, Prime, K21, After Hours and Train Of Thought all coming from the South and this track continues the legacy of quality – check below.

Alerts first came to national attention on Simplex’s debut Obese Records solo album “Audio Biography” through the standout posse cut track Opus Operandi along with Australian legends Delta of Nuffsaid Records and the ever-talented Motions. His memorable show stopping live performance accompanying this song at Home Grown for Da Klinic’s 10 th birthday bash in July 2011 at the now defunct HQ Complex main room really put him on notice. The track earned a place in esteemed Sydney DJ’s Shan Frenzie’s memorable Show & Prove mixtape showcasing the best hip hop released that year across the country along with the likes of Trem, Bias B, Drapht, Mantra plus more.

Alerts would go on to collaborate significantly with Kimence, as well as with a careful selection of Adelaide best including Mnops, Social Change, DJ Dyems and most recently Conseps. It is his stand- alone music however which has really established himself in his own right and led to support slots with the likes of Royce Da 5’9, Ras Kass, Kerser, Kings Konekted, Tech N9ne, Raekwon & Slick Rick, Skrub, Complete, Wombat, Rates, Delta, Cormega, Spice 1 and Fat Joe since 2015 leading him to headline his own gigs. Having performed all up and down Adelaide, Melbourne and Tasmania, Alerts has built a reputation for himself somewhat the old-fashioned way as a writer and performer from the ground up with a swell of support.

Back in late March 2018 almost two years ago to the day, Alerts dropped his impressive debut “The Prisoner” track produced by Simplex of Terra Firma. With the captivating visuals to the song executed by Josh Davis & Heath Kerr (Heata) of 1984 Films, the 4:20 minute offering has been played over 42,000 times on YouTube alone – a strong effort for his first independently released, unfiltered track.

Following a busy period of extensive performances across the country, the in-demand follow up was the three and a half minute “Get It” single released in June 2019, again produced by Simplex. The continuity in production work of the pairing of Alerts and Simplex sounds and feels like a natural fit and served as popular follow up to the breakthrough The Prisoner track. The music video is again Executed by Josh Davis and Heath Kerr of 1984 Films, really showcasing their diverse talents behind the lens. Get It also spawned a recent remix by Simplex, providing a fresh take on a heartfelt track.

Stay tuned – more Alerts music on the way soon, from the Southside to nation wide.

That Kid Kearve Continues His Meteoric Rise With New Track ‘This N That’ 23 Jun 2020 1:27 AM (4 years ago)

New 5 Track EP Coming Soon!

Sydney rapper That Kid Kearve, has recently released his brand new track ‘This N That’. It’s already racked up an impressive 120,000 views on YouTube in just under a week. Having no label support, and no features, Kearve be on the rise.

Produced by B Hill Beats, This N That is an absolute cruncher. It’s not only our release of the month but it’s also one of our favourite tracks from Kearves already extensive catalogue. The young West Sydney Rapper seems to be hitting new heights on each and every release, building a strong momentum for his EP which drops on all platforms on June 28.

This N That is the title track taken from the new EP. With no features, it’ll be 5 solo tracks of that straight fire. Producers on the project include Chief Wiggin Beats, the aforementioned B Hill Beats, Ozo, and Broke Boys. The EP is set to shake things up in the local scene.

Listeners seem to be rejecting the manufactured label approach to Hip Hop, especially at a local level. Some labels seem to be trying to tick a number of boxes for who they sign, that has no relation to the actual music. Fuck a label!

Check out the clip for This N That above featuring the handy work of West End Media.

Arona Mane X Blessed Team Up For Collab Single “Alone Not Lonely” 22 Jun 2020 1:50 AM (4 years ago)

One of Sydney’s most revered and in-demand producers Arona Mane has teamed up with also-Sydney-based genre-defying musician, producer, and songwriter BLESSED for one of the freshest collabs to come out of Australia so far this year – “Alone Not Lonely“.

Bringing together Arona Mane’s unique ability to play with beats and production and build soundscapes that feel familiar but are completely original and fresh, and BLESSED’s combination of soul-rock vibes and and pop melodies weaved into his own expressive vocal sound, “Alone Not Lonely” is a head bopping collab bursting with positivity, showcasing what both artists do best.

I’ve worked with Blessed a number of times over the years & It’s always [fire] when we team up in the studio.
As soon as I had finished this beat & played it back a couple times through my headphones I could already hear his tone & voice on it in my head.
I sent him the idea & It was no surprise to me when he laced the demo & sent it back that it was exactly how I imagined it would sound – FRESH AF!”

To mark the highly anticipated launch of Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us™ Part II, PlayStation Australia has partnered with Sony Music Australia to re-record ‘Through The Valley’ – the iconic track from the game’s Reveal Trailer that went viral in 2016 – with acclaimed Australian artist, Tash Sultana.

While respecting the original track arrangement and the intensity felt in the Reveal Trailer, Tash Sultana combines her hauntingly beautiful vocals and guitar talent to create a remarkable rendition of ‘Through The Valley’ that is truly hers. The result is a stunning collision of two cultures that will excite both the huge followings of The Last of Us™ and music fans everywhere.

Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part II is the cinematic, action-adventure sequel title to the critically acclaimed The Last of Us. Patrick Lagana, Director of Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment Australia said, “’Through The Valley’ became a #1 hit in several markets when featured in the 2016 reveal trailer for The Last of Us Part II*, so recreating this with a phenomenal Aussie talent like Tash Sultana truly creates a special Australian moment to mark the launch of one of our biggest titles for PS4.”

Tash Sultana said, “This is the first time I’ve done a collab like this.
