Bullying is an issue that schools and communities are contending with nationwide. To effectively prevent and address it, the help of a community is needed, including having students at school who embody anti-bullying principles. One anti-bullying organization rewards students who help address this issue at their school with college scholarships. The application window runs from March 1-31, 2024.
"Bullying prevention takes a group effort, and we want to reward some of the students who are actively addressing bullying at their schools," says Kirk Smalley, co-founder of Stand for the Silent. It's not easy for teens to actively engage in anti-bullying campaigns, so they deserve to be recognized and rewarded for their efforts."
While they would love to reward everyone helping the cause, they will reward numerous people through two scholarship programs. They have national and state scholarship opportunities for anti-bullying advocates to apply for. The number of applications for each scholarship is limited to the first 50 received. Those applying must be graduating high school seniors in the 2023-2024 school year and are planning to or are attending a college or educational institute in the country.
The national scholarship awards eight people per year with a $5,000 scholarship each. There are four given out in March and another four awarded in October. Two of the scholarships are in the name of Ty Smalley, who took his own life at age 11 due to the ongoing bullying he endured. The other two are in memory of his mother, Laura Smalley, who died tragically in 2020. Ty's parents founded the organization to address bullying nationwide and help prevent more children from such tragedies.
There will also be 32 state scholarships, each worth $2,500, with 16 given out in March and another 16 awarded in October. They will be awarded to students in the states where active fundraising is taking place to help the cause. The scholarship applications are limited to the first 50 submitted in each participating state, and the application deadline is March 31, 2024. The states (and one city) participating include Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, (Dallas, Texas), Utah, and Virginia.

Stand for the Silent announces the 2023 winners of their scholarship, with each teen being awarded a $5,000 scholarship.

Summer break is when kids get to unwind and have fun. It's also that time when they enjoy being with their family more. Whether dad gets to spend weekends, a week, or a month with their kids over the summer, it's essential to take the time to make memories.
Here are 8 ways single dads can have affordable fun with their children this summer:
- Outdoor movie. Look for ones being held in the community or create one in the yard. Films can be projected onto the garage door, or a sheet hung between trees. Set up chairs and invite some friends for an outdoor movie experience.
- Go camping. Staying at state parks to camp is usually affordable, but finding an opening can often be challenging. Look for a place with sites available, but if there are none, pitch the tent in the backyard and camp anyway. Backyard camping can be just as fun, and it's free.

According to the Dads’ Resource Center’s analysis of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997, here are 5 reasons why divorced dads play a vital role in their child’s life:
- Prosperity verse poverty. Children who have the active involvement of their father during their childhood earn 26% more than those who don’t ($59,490 versus $43,938).
- Social program usage. Children who did not have the active involvement of their father during their childhood were 94% more likely to have used government programs such as Women, Infants & Children, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and Workers Compensation.
- Better health. Children who did not have the active involvement of their father during their childhood were 11% more likely to have smoked and 20% more likely to have used hard drugs.
- Engaged citizens. Children who did not have the active involvement of their father during their childhood were 11% less likely to volunteer their time to the community,13% less likely to donate to a charity, and 26% less likely to vote.
- Increased resiliency. Children who did not have the active involvement of their father during their childhood were 13% more likely to have needed mental health treatment.

“Unfortunately, many judges, lawyers, guardian ad litems, as well as county and state agencies, and the welfare system, are all culpable in creating, or at least exasperating, this very serious problem,” said Dads’ Resource Center Founder Dr. Joel N. Myers. “Whatever their well-meaning intentions might be, they play big roles in maintaining and bolstering a system that discourages, inhibits or flat-out denies children from having access to their fathers.”
A Dads’ Resource Center study of 700 contested custody cases found that on average these courts awarded mothers 69% and fathers 31% of custody time. Mothers were given either full or primary custody in 496 of these cases, fathers received either full or primary custody in 100 of these cases and the parents were awarded joint custody in 104 of these cases.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 22 million children have a parent who lives outside of the household, which is around a quarter of all children. It further reports that 4 out of every 5 children’s custodial parent is their mother. Only one out of every five custodial parents are fathers. While the percentage of fathers who are the custodial parent has increased over the years, they are still being granted custodial rights far less often. In 1994, 16% of custodial parents were the father, and by 2018, only 20% of custodial parents are the father.
Many of the fathers who are not granted the custodial parent position get very little time with their child. According to the NLSY97 Analysis Executive Summary by Dads’ Resource Center, some of the hidden dangers are that those children are:
- Less likely to graduate from high school or graduate from college.
- Less likely to vote, donate to charity, or volunteer their time.
- More likely to have been convicted of a crime, use hard drugs, and smoke.
- More likely to have intercourse before age 17 and to need mental health treatment.
- More likely to make less money per year as an adult and much more likely to use government welfare programs
“Family courts and the human services systems were set up to protect children,” said Dads’ Resource Center Executive Director Jeffrey Steiner. “But there is a clear and pervasive pattern where they harm children by needlessly denying their fathers access to them. This has gone on far too long. Major reform is needed.”

So, if you’re already in retirement or plan to be there soon, how can you reduce some of that financial stress that’s weighing you down in these tumultuous times? Let me offer a few ideas:
- Take control.
Just stewing and letting the emotional strain rule your days and nights does no good. Instead, focus on actions you can take to help reduce some of that stress. Often, just doing something – anything – can help you feel better. Review your financial assets so you truly know where you stand. Those assets might include savings accounts, investment accounts, retirement accounts, life insurance, real property or other items. You can’t create a plan unless you know exactly where you stand, so taking stock of things should be the first step. That way you aren’t operating in the dark. And what about the “T” word? Taxes! Have you imparted tax-efficiency as a part of your retirement plan? Do you know your options when it comes to this certainty?
- Reconsider the timing of your retirement.
Whenever the economy is shaky, it’s best to consider your options ahead of time so you can be prepared before problems arise. If you’re still working, for example, and you suddenly lose your job, one option may be to retire earlier than you originally planned and take Social Security. That can come with downsides, though. If you begin drawing Social Security before your full retirement age (between 66 and 67 for most people) you receive a reduced monthly check. That could cost you tens of thousands of dollars over a long retirement. Conversely, if your job situation is stable but you're worried your nest egg is inadequate, consider postponing retirement. That will allow you to save more, potentially increase your Social Security benefits, and can potentially give your investments time to recover from temporary market declines.
- Review your budget and clean up bad habits.
Many of us have less-than-stellar financial habits that we developed over the years. Those patterns of behavior don’t magically disappear as you approach retirement. You need to be intentional about changing bad habits so you aren’t spending more money than you need to – or should. To help you determine the difference between necessary and discretionary spending, review the past six months to a year of expenditures. As you review your spending, think beyond all those momentary, one-time splurges. Include your regular household bills, such as utilities, cable and cell phone service. You might be able to save money through a family plan, by bundling services, or by cutting the cord altogether.
- Evaluate the risk in your portfolio.
Perhaps you have had an aggressive investment strategy, and that’s how you accumulated a big nest egg that (you hope) was designed to carry you through decades of retirement. But, in an uncertain market and with retirement already here or close at hand, it may be wise to re-evaluate how much risk you’re holding in your portfolio. Now would be a good time to diversify and consider other investment options so you can help protect what you already have.
Remember, though, that if your unsteady financial situation is getting the better of you, you don’t have to go it alone. Find an experienced financial professional who can help you develop a plan that can potentially ease at least some of your worries.
