How To Use Your Dremel Rotary Tool 21 Nov 2022 4:14 PM (2 years ago)

The Dremel is a rotary tool which spins at very high rpm’s (rotations per minute). It is a multipurpose tool with many attachments that can easily be changed to suit many different types of jobs.

Dremel Rotary ToolDremel Tool Safety Rules

Kickback and Related Warnings

Wear proper safety gear. Always wear work or rubber gloves when you run the Dremel. Gloves will keep your hands safe from debris and sharp edges. You should also wear safety glasses, especially when cutting, polishing, or grinding with the Dremel.

Practice inserting and securing bits. To insert a bit, place the bit into the hole at the end of the Dremel and back it out slightly. Tighten the collet nut so that the bit is secure and doesn’t wiggle. To remove the bit, press down on the shaft lock button while turning the collet. This should loosen the bit so you can replace it.

Dremel Rotary Tool Bits

Use the right bit for the job. You should choose your bit attachment based on the type of material you’ll be working with. Dremel makes many bits with a variety of materials for almost any material. For example, for:

Dremel Cutting Bits

Dremel Grinding Bits

Dremel Sanding Bits

Make sure your Dremel is switched off before you plug it in. Once you plug it in, turn it on to the lowest setting and practice switching to different speeds.

Dremel Routing BitsUse your Dremel for small cuts and detailing. The Dremel is lightweight and easy to maneuver, making it deal for small detailing and little cuts. It can be difficult to give smooth, long curves, because you’re mostly working free hand. But, you can make several straight cuts to get the kind of edge you’re looking for and then even up the edge with the sanding bit.

Secure the object. Depending on the object or material you’re cutting, secure the object with a vise or clamps. Do not hold the material you’re cutting in your hand if you can help it.

Dremel Carving BitsCut at the appropriate speed for your bit and the material. A speed that is too high or too low can cause damage to your motor, the bit, or the material you’re working on. If you’re not sure, check your owner’s manual to see what speed is recommended for your particular Dremel and material.

Grind using your Dremel. For grinding, attach grinding stones which can be fixed to the mandrel/shaft. Slide the grinding stone into the front of the tool where it is fully inserted and tighten. Turn your Dremel on and grind on a low setting so you don’t overheat the material. Gently hold the grinding stone against the material until it wears down.

Dremel SandingStart sharpening or sanding with your Dremel. Select a sandpaper bit and secure it in your Dremel. Sandpaper bits are available in fine through course grits, and all grades should fit on the same mandrel. Tighten the screw at the end of the sandpaper bit. Turn on your Dremel and set it between 2 and 10. Choose lower settings if you’re sanding or polishing plastics or woods. Select a higher setting if you’re sanding metal. While holding the material secure, run the bit across the material so that the sandpaper bit completely comes into contact with your material and sharpens or sands it.

Move from coarser bits to softer bits. If you’ve got a big job, begin with coarser bits before moving to softer bits. This can help you sand out larger scratches quickly and then you can have more control over working through the material. If you skip the coarse bit and begin with a softer bit, it will take you longer and you’ll wear out the softer bit.

Polish metal or plastics. The Dremel is an excellent tool for fine-detail polishing or polishing in tight spots. Rub a polishing compound over the surface of your object and fit your Dremel with a felt polishing tip or wheel. Start your drill at a low speed (2) and run it against the polishing compound. You should work the wheel in circles until the material is polished. Avoid using a much higher speed (don’t go over 4).

Today’s Dremel Tools, Which One Is Right for Me? 21 Dec 2020 12:25 AM (4 years ago)

Today’s Dremel Tools, Which One Is Right for Me?
By Floyd Taylor

Dremel tools are made in America and have been a household name for generations. They have a reputation for being high-quality, versatile tools and have been popular with homeowners and hobbyists ever since the first Dremel rotary tool was introduced over 75 years ago.

The Dremel company has continually refined and perfected their products and now offers a line of rotary tools designed to serve a wide range of hobbies and around-the-house projects. Many businesses also find Dremel tools a great asset to complement to their standard-size saws, routers and sanders.

Choosing The Right Dremel Tool

The Dremel tool that is right for you will depend on the types of projects you want to do. So, to begin the process of choosing, think about what you want to do with the tool. Then try to imagine yourself completing one of your projects using the tool that you are considering. Does it feel right? Then you need to evaluate the accessories that come with the tool. Are all the bits that you’ll need included? You should also check to see if there is a kit that will save you money. Kits usually contain more bits and accessories than you think you will need. But, believe me, no matter which of Dremel’s tools you decide on, you’ll soon discover that your Dremel tool is even more useful than you imagined. There are over 200 attachments and accessories available making every Dremel tool extremely versatile.

Additional Tips in Using the Dremel 8200-2/28 Cordless Rotary Tool 23 Jun 2020 8:00 PM (4 years ago)

Additional Tips in Using the Dremel 8200-2/28 Cordless Rotary Tool
By John Delaney

Here are some more tips and reminders for when you are using your Dremel 8200 rotary tool. Knowing these should make your efforts easier, safer, and more productive.

Additional Tips in Using the Dremel 8200-2/28 Cordless Rotary Tool-FB1. Always us the collet size which matches the shank size of the accessory you are going to use. There are 4 different collet sizes (1/32″, 1/16″, 3/32″, and 1/8″) available for the Dremel 8200. The 1/8″ size collet is normally included in most tool kits.

2. The 8200 comes with a built-in “hanger” that you can use to hang up your rotary tool when it is not in use. When you need to use your Dremel 8200, just snap the hanger back in place on the body of the rotary tool.

3. Make sure that your attached accessory is in balance on your rotary tool before you use it. After attaching your accessory, just turn on the rotary tool and you should be able to tell from the feel and the sound whether the attached accessory is in balance. To correct an imbalance, simply loosen the collet nut, twist the accessory a little, and retighten the collet nut. Then recheck the balance by restarting the rotary tool. You may need to perform these steps a couple of times until you are satisfied with the balance. The Dremel 8200 comes with a collet wrench.

4. When using wire brushes, never set the operating speed of the rotary tool at greater than 15,000 RPMs. Pieces of the wire brush may come loose during operation and become embedded in your skin. In addition, when you first attach a wire brush to your Dremel, turn on the Dremel and let it run for about a minute before using it. This 60-second warm up period should shake free any pieces of wire on the brush that are loose.

5. When using your tool for serious grinding or when using a cutoff wheel, grasp the body of the Dremel like you would hold a fishing rod – with your thumb on top near the OFF/ON switch, the body of the tool resting in the palm of your hand, and the other four fingers securing the left side of the tool.

6. Setting your rotary tool at a speed greater than 15,000 RPMs when using a bristle brush, may damage the brush.

7. When working with plastic, start your tool at a low rate of speed and gradually increase the speed until you see the plastic begin to melt. Then reduce your tool’s speed a little. This will give you the optimum working speed for that piece of plastic.

Dremel 82008. If the 3 lights on the fuel gauge begin flashing “off and on” that indicates your rotary tool’s battery has become too hot for use. Just turn off your tool, take a break, and let your tool cool down. (Note: If the 3 lights are flashing “side to side” or just 1 light is flashing “off and on”, that means that your battery needs to be recharged.)

9. Just like with most cutting tools, never turn on your Dremel with it touching the material you are going to work on. Instead, start your Dremel and let it reach the full speed you set it for before you begin to cut/polish/sand/grind/etc the material.

10. If your tool bit binds up in the material you are working on, don’t worry. Your Dremel’s motor will stop automatically (a nice feature). Once you are able to unbind the tool’s bit from the material, the rotary tool will start up again automatically.

I hope these tips and reminders help!

Repair, Restore, Remodel – How a Multi-Tool Will Multiply Your Productivity 23 Jun 2020 7:44 PM (4 years ago)

Repair, Restore, Remodel – How a Multi-Tool Will Multiply Your Productivity
By Mallory Kramer

For always professional results in your repairs, renovations, and restorations – look no further than a multi-tool. This power tool is, as the name suggests, one tool with the capacity to perform many functions and with a varsatility and functionality that is truly unbeatable. Most multipurpose tools are light weight, and designed for tight space applications and close quarter work in corners and on floors – their design makes them not only versatile, but also easy to use.

Repair, Restore, RemodelA multi-tool takes on scraping, grinding, cutting, and sanding with precision, accuracy, and an unique oscillating technology that delivers optimal precision and control every time. This oscilliation technology, or rapid, successive back and forth motion provides the multi-tool with more optimized precision and handling than any other tool available.

From the company that developed the world’s first oscillating MultiMaster over 41 years ago, there are several multipurpose tools available. In 1967 Fein developed the first power tool to utilize this coveted oscillating technology To begin, Fein’s MultiMaster Start is a high performance tool designed around beginners and simple home-repairs and restorations. The Start is the first link in Fein’s MultiMaser chain (behind the MultiMaster Select and MultiMaster Top), but at no sacrifice to quality, performance, or professionalism. The Start is a true-blue MultiMaster capable of all cutting, grinding, scraping, and sanding applications; and utilizes some of the most advanced accessories for sawing, scraping, and etc. The Start’s lightweight and ergonomic design make it simple to use and control, and with a powerful, variable speed (up to 21,000 OPM), 250 watt motor – Fein’s Start is both strong and versatile.

This superior versatility makes the Start a great tool for simple renovations like flooring, tile work, windows, and cabinets. Fein’s Multi-Master Start includes one sanding pad (with hook and loop design for easy changes on the job) and five of each type of sanding sheet in 60, 80, 120, and 180 grain. The start also includes: a key and mounting bolts – a rigid stopping knife for lifting linoleum, carpet, adhesive residue, paint, tape etc. – and a (29mm) universal E-Cut blade for base and flooring work. The E-Cut blade is ideal for door jambs, baseboards, toe kicks, and other flooring applications. It effortlessly cuts through plaster, wood, drywall, and plastic and synthetic materials. The blade has an unique fine tooth pattern for enhanced control, accuracy, and blade life – and a flush cut design that provides perfectly perpendicular cuts for flooring and tight areas.

Fein’s MultiMaster Select and Top both offer the features of the Start with a few more benefits. The MultiMaster Select is a professional renovation tool built with Fein’s tool-free quickIN rapid clamping system which allows for quick and simple, keyless accessory changes and the same powerful, variable speed motor. The Select includes, in addition, a carbide tipped saw blade and an HSS segmented saw blade. The carbide blade is is essential in removing damaged tile joints and carving grooves in plaster, concrete, and other similar building materials. The segmented blade is flat and high-speed, designed for cutting fiber-glass, carbon-fiber, 20 gauge sheet metal, and hardwoods. The blade’s segmented shape allows it to cut right, or ninety degree angles without over-cutting.

Now, the MultiMaster Top is designed to help craftsmen professionally complete the most detailed jobs or hobby projects. It includes the same accessories as the Start and Select, and all the additional ones necessary to champion a wide range of applications. The Top includes a perforated sanding pad with 5 more of each grain (60, 80, 120, and 180, perforated), a profile sanding set, dust extraction device, plastic carrying case, and a triangular, perforated, carbide rasp for grinding filler, adhesive, concrete, stone, and wood. Fein’s MultiMasters are generally more expensive than their competitors, but, Fein also has the experience, technology, and longevity to provide an exceptional product.

Now, after losing their patent around a year-or-so ago, Fein has some tough competition. Bosch has just released their new Multi-X multifunction tool powered by a professional, high-performance 12v motor. Oscillating from 5,000 – 20,000 OPM, the tool’s variable speed dial is designed to provide the huge range of applications and speed adjustments needed for a craftsman’s very multifaceted work day. For enhanced versatility and precision, Bosch’s Multi-X has multiple position settings rotating in 30 degree increments, and a tool holder with a 240 degree angle adjustment for optimized tool movement. Weighing only 2.12 lbs Bosch’s multi-tool has a comfortable ergonomic design with a small perimeter, and soft grip.

This comfortable design reduces operator stress and fatigue, and maximizes overall performance on the job. To protect your projects and materials as you work, Bosch’s multi-tool also has a no-mar plastic nose. The Multi-X is powered with Bosch’s Litheon battery technology which utilizes lithium ion technology to achieve optimal battery life and power. Litheon batteries are compact and lightweight providing maximum power in a more efficient package. Bosch has also incorporated a built-in fuel gauge for battery charge control. Capable of countless applications, the Multi-X is ideal for seasoned craftsmen and carpenters, and serious do-it-yourself-ers alike.

The Multi-X is compatible with a huge range of premium performance Bosch accessories including: plunge cuts for both metal and wood, sanding pads, and grout removal and flush cut accessories. An etched depth gauge for accurate capacity measurements, and Bosch’s universal interface are also available. The interface makes the Multi-X compatible with accessories and attachments from other manufacturers. The Multi-X is available in two packages: the PS50-2A and PS50-2B. The Multi-X PS50-2A include and HCS wood plunge cut blade, sanding plate set, sanding paper, two Litheon 12v max batteries, an adapter, 30 minute charger, and carrying case for security and convenience. The PS50-2B includes everything from the previous package, with three additional HCS wood plunge cut blades and an HCS wood segment blade. Bosch’s Multi-X is versatile, durable, efficient, and backed by Bosch’s Provantage three year tool protection plan.

Dremel Multi-Max 5 Amp Variable Speed Corded Oscillating Tool Kit with 28-AccessoriesDremel has also introduced a Multi-Max multifunction tool to give these others a run for their money. With a 1.5 Amp motor powerful enough to cut through even a 1-1/4in. oak door jamb, Dremel’s Multi-Max is truly tough. Ranging from 10,000 – 21,000 OPM (oscillations per minute) the tool has a huge speed range for optimized control and versatility. Dremel’s Multi-Max also has an ergonomic and compact design to provide enhanced operator comfort and control, and better access into tight or confined areas.

The Multi-Max has a separate on/off switch which maintains speed setting even after the tool is shut off, and an electronic feedback to ensure consistent speed throughout even the toughest applications. The tool also features a Quick Fit mechanism which allows for faster, easier use, and changes accessories up to twice as a fast as other tools. The Dremel Multi-Max kit includes: a sanding pad with three pieces of tough sanding paper for wood, metal, and chipboard – a flexible scraper for tough removal of caulk and adhesive – a 3in. wood and drywall half-round blade which is also ideal for plastics – a 3-1/4in. wood blade for wood, plastic, and drywall cutting – and a carrying case for convenience and portability. Also coming with Dremel’s two year limited warranty, the Dremel Multi-Max is compatible with a number of other grinding, cutting, and sanding accessories making it one of the most versatile tools available today.

The versatility of a multi-tool is absolutely unbeatable. For grinding, sanding, cutting, and scraping there is no challenger to its accuracy and functionality. With unique oscillation technology the multi-tool precisely and perfectly takes your repairs, remodels, and restorations to an entirely new level.

Some Helpful Tips in Using the Dremel 8200-2/28 Rotary Tool 23 Jun 2020 6:27 PM (4 years ago)

Some Helpful Tips in Using the Dremel 8200-2/28 Rotary Tool
By John Delaney

Tip #1 – Disconnect the battery from the tool before changing accessories to keep yourself from accidentally starting the rotary tool.

Some Helpful Tips in Using the Dremel 8200-2/28 Rotary ToolTip #2 – The General Rule of Thumb to use when deciding what speed to set your rotary tool at is: The softer the material, the lower the speed to use. The Dremel 8200 Owner’s Manual provides 4 pages of suggested speed settings depending on the material and particular Dremel accessory tool the user is using.

Tip #3 – Use a series of passes with the rotary tool rather than trying to do all the work in one single pass. Don’t apply much pressure when using your tool. Let the speed of the tool do the work!

Tip #4The Dremel 8200 comes with 4 different size collets (1/8″, 3/32′, 1/16″, 1/32″) that the user can use. (A collet is small metal holding device that is held in place on the rotary tool by the collet nut, and the collet’s function is to hold an accessory in place during its use.) To determine the exact size of a particular collet he or she is holding, the user just has to look at the number of rings on the back end of the collet. A 1/8″ collet has no rings. A 3/32″ collet has 3 rings, a 1/16″ collet has 2 rings, and a 1/32″ collet has just 1 ring.

Tip #5 – When using the rotary tool, do not hold your face close to the tool (safety concern).

Tip #6 – To help you get used to using your Dremel on a particular type of material, practice using your tool on a piece of scrap made of the same material.

Tip #7 – For better and closer control, hold your rotary tool like you would a pencil.

Dremel 8220-2/28 12-Volt Max Cordless Rotary ToolTip #8 – Do not leave your battery laying out in the sun. If the battery becomes too hot (over 113 degrees Fahrenheit) or too cold (under 32 degrees Fahrenheit), the charger will not be able to fast charge the battery. Once the battery’s temperature is between 32 degrees F – 113 degrees F, the charger will begin charging the battery. When the charger’s green indicator light is blinking, then the battery charger is charging.

Tip #9 – When the power in your battery is used up, the Dremel automatically turns off. To give you a heads up that your battery’s power is almost used up, the last light on the battery fuel gauge will begin flashing.

Tip #10 – Do not use gasoline, carbon tetrachloride, clorinated cleaning solvents, ammonia, or household detergents that contain ammonia to clean your rotary tool as they may damage the plastic parts.

Hopefully, these tips will help you as you use your Dremel 8200.

The Dremel Trio 18 Aug 2019 7:35 PM (5 years ago)

The Dremel Trio
By G. Marvin

Have you ever had a smaller project at home, whether remodeling or crafts or hobbies and the only tool available to you was cumbersome or overpowered for your application? Well the new Dremel Trio is here to fill those needs. The Dremel Trio was designed for ergonomics and function.

The Dremel TrioAnyone who has ever used a router or laminate trimmer style tool for smaller jobs knows the awkwardness of trying to figure out how to hold the tool for their application, not to mention the uncomfortable feeling of trying to compensate for the torque. Lets face it, most tool we use are made for a specific purpose and if you try to use it for a different application it is just plain uncomfortable and unnerving. Talking from experience, whenever a person runs a piece of equipment and they are uncomfortable with it, that is when accidents occur and the quality of work is not what it can be.

Dremel has been a household name for generations. Dremel has outdone themselves this time.

The Dremel TrioThis is probably one of the most logical tools I have seen in years. The handle is adjustable from 0 to 90 degrees, so you can adjust it to your comfort level.
