Romany Makeover: Looking Back and Forward at the same time. 27 Jan 3:22 PM (2 months ago)

I remember starting this blog when I was working at Glamour and renovating my first apartment. I’ve always loved a good makeover, and at the time, I was a dweller without a decorator. I wanted a place where I could keep a record of everything I found, wanted, or used—all my inspirations.

When I finished decorating my second (and final) apartment in NYC, I declared it perfect. That’s when my husband said, “Let’s move to LA.” WHAT? I had no reason or desire to go to LA. I had the best job, amazing friends, and my entire family was in NYC. But one of the editors at Glamour—actually, two of them, Xanthipi Joannides and Felicia Milewicz—encouraged me to try something new, step out of my comfort zone, and have an adventure. I thought, Two years max!

At the time, I had three little boys, so I told my husband, “If you can find the school, babysitter, and house, then I’ll go.” I was working and didn’t have time to figure it all out—and you know what? He did it. He found everything.

I had never lived in a house before (where I was the responsible party), and I have to admit, my mother was not pleased because it was a three-bedroom, and there wouldn’t be space for her to stay with us. But the property was magical. The house itself, though, was outdated and smelled like a dead rodent. Still, I knew with a little vision, it could and would be a dream house. And so, I “Suzyfied” it. That’s how my friend Steve described it to my husband.

I never actually finished it. It was always a work in progress. But now that it’s gone, I want to remember every inch. And also, I want to return to DWOD to start reimagining my dream house.

Here I am, 14 years later, with a choice: move on or stay. I want to stay. I love LA, the Pacific Palisades, and the life I’ve built here. I’d love to be part of the next generation.

So, here’s to looking backwards and forwards at the same time. Over the next few weeks, I’ll post the makeover of the old house and then start incorporating things I’d love to see in the new one.

Did I mention the house was pink with green - First thing was to paint everything white!

How To Build A Raised Bed Garden That Keeps the Animal's Out 18 Aug 2020 7:09 AM (4 years ago)

This took the entire weekend to build but was an amazing bonding project with 2 of my three sons. You can not build this alone and it was longer than 6 hours if you do it right, but it is so cute right? This is the Photo from this morning. I bought it at Outdoor Living Today.

Getting ready for step 2 below

I got this tip from North Coast Gardening : Line the ground with Chicken wire, staple and nail it and use pig rings to connect.  All the details are in the link from North Coast Gardening.

Step 3 Plant - Who has tips on that? Please comment below.

White Bathrooms I'm Loving Now 12 Jun 2016 8:22 AM (8 years ago)

I am still searching for the perfect white bathroom for my remodel! Would love any suggestions:

Like the white framed mirror above
This rustic modern Eric Olsen bathroom would be perfection in my guest bath.
Simple clean easy chic. A little too traditional for me but love anyway.
The mirror on the right gives depth
Like the floor
Obsessed with these fixtures! Does anyone know who makes them?

The mosaic tile is so sparkly and clean J'adore!
Love an oversized frame

The Best White Marble Alternative FOUND! New Statuario Pol Porcelain. 22 Jul 2015 5:44 AM (9 years ago)

The search is over and you will love me because I finally found it! After bouncing around between Ceasarstone, Silestone, Granite, and the real thing (which of course looked so much better than everything else) I finally found perfection in the form of porcelain tile. My husband and I kept looking for a really white looking carerra marble with grains that didn't just look like dirt, beige or faux.  Then by a fluke, I found Statuario Polished Porcelain Slab made in Italy by Iris.  Not only is it much less expensive than the runner up which was Ceasarstone Calacatta Nuvo but it looks exactly like the real thing. Why? Because it is not a drawn on pattern, but a digital high resolution photographic image that has the beauty of a natural slab of marble.  How cool is that?  It is thin so you have to build it up with a solid piece of wood.
I overheard the sales person whisper to my contractor that it is $1600 a slab.

(I ended up getting this and it looks AMAZING and never gets dirty) Link Here

Shout out to Studio McGee for sharing this perfect kitchen with the world. I empaled them to ask what the divine countertop was and they replied,"We used Hanstone - Tranquility in this kitchen. It came out really good and looks even better in person. Please let me know what additional info you need from us".

I am obsessed with this white and gold kitchen that is chicer than chic by Studio McGee! Check out the before and after HERE

The 4 Best Carrera Marble Alternatives 12 Jul 2015 8:34 PM (9 years ago)

I have been looking for the perfect kitchen counter top and with 3 kids, a marble Carrera counter is just not an option. It stains and always looks a little dirty. I'm totally obsessed with finding something that looks more white than grey and more real than fake.  Here are my top 4 picks for the best Carrera marble alternative.

1. Cambria Torquay Quartz countertops (looks just like marble).
2. HanStone quartz called Tranquility
3. Misty Carrera by Caesarstone.
4. Frosty Carrera by Caesarstone

Kitchen Renovation Meditation 11 Jul 2015 7:24 AM (9 years ago)

Breathing in it's going to look fabulous!
Doris Day's Kitchen
Doris Day was so  happy in hers and mine looked the same but I just couldn't find the love. Since the day I moved into this house, I have been secretly plotting to destroy this kitchen. My husband finally gave me the green light and so before I even had a plan I ripped it up the next day. There is no turning back now!  I am pulling it together on the fly and I am so excited! The concept is this below.

Something like this but not this:
White cabinets, white beveled subway tile , white Carrera countertop with waterfall and pale gray floor tile.
Unfortunately, I have to buy a pinball machine and put it in the living room as payback and keep the Go Rangers welcome mat but I think it is a fair exchange.
So fellow dwellers with taste - any good advice. Help.

unplug meditation studio: Before and After 11 Apr 2014 9:47 PM (11 years ago)

I know it has been too LONG but I have been busy turning my vision board into a real place called unplug meditation . About a year and 1/2 ago I decided that I wanted to learn how to meditate and realized that I couldn't find a place that felt modern, chic and clean with meditation that was easy to learn and guided by inspirational teachers.  So, I decided to build it. It's called unplug meditation and the grand opening is this Tuesday. You are all invited to try it out this week free.
It's located at 12401 Wilshire Blvd suite 101, Los Angeles, CA 90025 Would love to hear what you think. Please.

When I found out the front desk was going to cost $17,000 I went into panic mode and then ran to Ikea
and bought a kitchen cabinet. I am so happy with it!

This is a magnetic book wall. The books float on the wall and the shelves are magnets. You can easily take the books on and off.
Wabi Sabi bookcase. The best part of being the store buyer is that I want everything inside.
Lauren Eckstrom one of unplug meditation's inspirational; teachers hanging on the shoe cubby.  I had the wall letters made by Craft Cuts and it was a great find. The cushion is charcoal flannel.

Love these meditation chairs the go into 5 positions and the art was made from large canvases from Blick and vinyl letters from Craft Cuts.

Lawn Minimalism with Creeping Red Fescue 23 Nov 2013 1:55 PM (11 years ago)

I have been totally inspired by Kelly Behun's home in Elle Decor  to complete pull out the piles of random bushes and make a clean boarder of Creeping Red Fescue - the long swirly grass that is chic beyond and used in LA in stunning ways. Problem is that I was quoted $26,000 to do this — can you imagine? So now I am planting with seed for a couple hundred and it is working. I started with a small patch and now I am going to go for it. My back yard is a mess but will post when it is done.

3 Landscaping ideas .... Just a thought. 2 Jul 2013 6:53 AM (11 years ago)

This is beyond cool BUT I can only imagine my gardeners charging me double if I dared put it in.

Via Inner Gardens: I told my husband that I was desperate for one of these purple trees - then oddly enough we actually had one.  Love the symmetry of two flanking a house .
Dramatic and Fun I love these plants in white gravel - They look like sculptures.

Steal this Wine Barrel idea from Entertainologist Lulu Powers 24 Jun 2013 11:03 AM (11 years ago)

My son's room is looking a little to Ikeaish and needs a rustic modern touch. Love this idea from Entertainologist Lulu Powers: Via HERE

"This is such a chic idea for your backyard or for outdoor parties. Home Depot has 18″ whiskey barrels for $30 and Bed Bath & Beyond has 20″ glass table toppers for $8.99. For $38.99 you can make your own whiskey barrel tables! "

Good Decorating Choices - Chic Floor Lamp 10 Jun 2013 9:23 AM (11 years ago)

There is nothing better for  a dweller without a decorator when he or she  knows that they have made a good decorating choice. My living room always looks dark but I just bought 4 Restoration Hardware lamps that look invisible but make a serious impact. I know what you are thinking 4 is excessive and too matchy matchy but it works and adds big drama. Granted, two out of the four showed up broken so I will show you the quad when the others show. SO EXCITED!

This is the lamp:
