The Crete to Santorini ferry schedule is available at the bottom of the article.
If you are already tired of the superb sunrises in Santorini or of the volcano views, then you can plan taking a day trip to Crete. The largest of the Greek islands, Crete boasts lovely beaches, incredible architecture and tasty (healthy) cuisine.
One of the romantic ways to go from one island to another is by ferry. Along with the lovely views of the sea and the ports, you also get to save some money on your ticket.
When you look up the ferries between two islands, you are actually looking for ferries between two ports. And in some cases, the name of the island isn’t the same as the name of the port. Santorini makes no exception, so in case you cannot find the island listed in the schedules and on line booking systems, then look for Thira (Santorini) or the port code ATI.
Being the largest of the Greek islands, it only makes sense to find more than one port serving Crete. In fact, Crete is served by four ports:
The ferry journey between Santorini and Crete (Heraklio) takes 1 h 40 min (on high speed ferry) and up to 4 or 5 hrs on the regular (old-style) ferry.

All ferry companies submit their schedule to the Ministry of Merchant Marine weekly so it is possible to find that the online schedule is not very accurate in some cases. Also, if the schedule hasn’t been made public yet for a route, you won’t be able to find or book a ferry for that route.

The Crete to Athens ferry schedule is available at the bottom of the article.
Nothing is more romantic than approaching Crete by ferry. And if your budget is rather low, nothing is cheaper either! Ferries have become a very popular way to travel between the mainland and the islands, especially when you are looking to save some money. A deck seat on a ferry costs less than the airplane ticket between Athens and Crete.
The Port of Piraeus (or Pireas*) serves Athens. It is large, hectic and confusing. Make sure you allow plenty of time to get from the airport or the hotel to the port. And also allow enough time to find the gate (it’s written on the ticket).
Ferries to Crete depart from Port Gate Ε2 and E3. The port gate E2 is served by the free bus within the port, while at the gate E3 you will also find a rest area and places to eat.

When you look up ferries between two places (mainland to islands or between islands), you are actually looking for a way to travel by ferry between two ports. While for the majority of islands, you’ll find the port name exactly the same of the island’s name, it is not Crete’s case.
The island is served by the following ports:
To make it less confusing, Heraklio and Chania are served by the most ferries, so those two ports are the best choices for tourists. Price-wise, the tickets to Chania are cheaper than the tickets to Heraklio.
The ferry journey between Athens (Piraeus, alt spelling Pireas) to Crete (Heraklio or Chania) takes between 6 hours, 30 minutes and 8 hours, depending on the type of ferry you are taking. If you travel between Athens and Rethymnon, the journey takes 12 hours and 3 minutes.
Yes, there are catamarans (high speed ferries) on the route but the travel time is still 9h (because of the route they take).
The price depends on where you prefer to stay (deck seat, cabin, lounge) and the type of ferry you are taking, as well as the port you’ll be arriving in (although the differences are not significant). Also, you should consider that several ferry companies serve the route so there’s also a price difference between the same type of seat on ferries run by different companies.

Chania
On the ferry operated by Blue Star Ferries, a single adult ticket starts at 52.50 eur.

To Sitia: there are no sailing available for this time of the year
Yes, there’s a ferry departing at 9 p.m. daily both during the high and low season. There are departures to both Heraklio and Chania. Also, during the low season there’s a ferry departing at 9:30 pm to Heraklio, almost daily.
You can buy tickets online right here, at most 2 months before the departure.
Another option is to have your travel agent book them for you, but they will need to contact a Greek travel agency. So an easier option is to contact a reliable Greek travel agency yourself and book your tickets via them.
If you have some time available between your arrival in Athens and the time you planned to take the ferry to Crete, you can buy the tickets directly in the port of Piraeus, at Port Gate Ε1. Unless you are traveling during the peak season or national holiday weekends, you shouldn’t worry about booking in advance, especially if you plan to use a deck seat.
All the research points to the fact that the prices are exactly the same, whether you buy them online, via a travel agent or directly from the ticketing office in the port. If there are any differences, those shouldn’t be significant.
However, when you book online, service fees may apply based on the country you book from. And if you choose to get the tickets deliver via courier, you’ll pay the shipping fee (you can choose to pick them up in the port).

Sometimes the ferry schedules available online are not very accurate. It’s not the websites’ fault at all as the ferry companies submit their schedule to the Ministry of Merchant Marine weekly. Hence the ferry schedule might change from week to week. Your best bet is to check this link the day before departure (or the day of before) just to make sure things haven’t changed.

The Hydra to Athens ferry schedule is available at the bottom of the article.
Hydra is one of the Saronic Islands, located close to Athens and is also one of the popular islands to take a day trip from Athens. If you are looking for a picture perfect harbor and great food, then Hydra is the place to visit. Since the ferries represent the only way to get to the island, if you plan to take the trip during the weekend in the middle of the high season, then you need to do some planning in advance.
The port of Piraeus (or Pireas*) is large and can be quite confusing at first. Allow some time to get used to the port and find the gate.
All the ferries to Hydra depart from Port Gate Ε8 (the gate always appears printed on your ticket).

You can book your tickets online right here if the official schedule is approved.
Another option is to book via a travel agent in your country or directly via a Greek travel agency.
You can also buy your tickets direct from the port (Port Gate Ε1). Unless you plan to travel during the weekends right in the middle of the high season (July and August) there isn’t much need to book your tickets in advance.
The schedules might change from week to week as the ferry companies submit their schedules weekly to the Ministry of Mercantile Marine. Hence, your best bet is to check this link the day before departure (or the day of before) just to make sure things haven’t changed.

One of the best ways to save some money when getting from Athens to an island is by catching a ferry rather than flying. And Mykonos makes no exception. It is the perfect opportunity to see the beauty of the sea and enjoy making some friends along the way.
The port of Piraeus (or Pireas*) is large and can be a little confusing at first. Make sure to allow plenty of time to find the terminal and your ferry.
All the ferries to Mykonos depart from Port Gate Ε7 (at Karaiskaki square ,Akti Tzelepi). The gate is both for passengers and vehicles.

No.
You can book your tickets online from here. You can also book your tickets via a travel agent but the same restrictions apply. However, your local agent will have to book via a Greek Travel Agent so might as well do it yourself.
There’s always the possibility to buy the tickets directly from the port of Piraeus (Port Gate E1), whether you do it several days before departure or on the same day. During the busy time of the year (July and August) it’s advisable to buy your ticket 4-7 days prior to departure especially if you want to use a cabin. The deck seats are usually easily available even during the high season.
If you buy the ticket directly from Athens it might cost a little less than if you choose to book it online. But the difference is not significant.
However, when you book online, service fees may apply based on the country you book from. And if you choose to get the tickets delivered via courier, you’ll pay the shipping fee (you can choose to pick them up in the port).

Santorini is linked to many islands which makes it a great starting point when you plan to explore Greece’s islands. Some of the islands are very close and can be visited during a day trip, while others are located further away and you should allow several days for such a trip.
Rhodes is one of the islands located further from Santorini and which can be a nice stop on your island hopping itinerary. It might not be one of the cheapest destinations in Greece but is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful and romantic Greek island.
When you look up the ferries between two islands, you are actually looking for connections between ports. So, in most online booking systems and on official schedules, look for Thira (Santorini). The port code is ATI.
Although the English speaking world uses “Rhodes” for the island’s name, you’ll find the island referred to as Rodos (sometimes also spelled as Rhodos), especially on the online booking sites. The port code is ROD.
It takes between 15 and 24 hours to get from Santorini to Rhodes on the ferries operated by Aegeon Pelagos.
Not exactly. All ferries carry both passengers and vehicles.
The prices depend on the company and type of ferry, as well as on the class.
The single ticket on a slow ferry (people and cars) operated by Blue Star Ferries starts at 26 EUR on the deck.
The following ferries connect Santorini to Rhodes during the low season 2025 (March – June):
Day of the week | Hour | Dates |
---|---|---|
Tuesday | 2:50 PM | on 24-Mar |
Saturday | 2:50 PM | on 26-Mar |
Tuesday | 4:40 PM | on 22-Mar |
Monday | 11:50 PM | from 3-Mar to 14-Apr, on 28-Apr |
Wednesday | 11:50 PM | from 5-Mar to 16-Apr, on 30-Apr |
Friday | 11:50 PM | from 7-Mar to 18-Apr,on 2-May |
The 2025 high season schedule is not yet available. However, you can get an idea of possible sailing days / hours by checking out last year’s schedule.
The following ferries connect Santorini to Rhodes during the high season 2024 (July-September):
Day of the week | Hour | Dates |
---|---|---|
Tuesday | 12:50 AM | from 4-Jun to 25-Jun, from 2-Jul to 17-Sept |
Thursday | 12:50 AM | from 6-Jun to 27-Jun, from 4-Jul to 19-Sept |
Saturday | 12:50 AM | from 1-Jun to 29-Jun, from 6-Jul to 21-Sept |
Yes, there are ferries which run during the night.
The 2025 high season schedule is not yet available. However, you can get an idea of possible sailing days / hours by checking out last year’s schedule.

Friday | 7:00 AM | on 25-Apr |
Monday | 7:00 AM | on 21-Apr |
Tickets can be purchased online here , from the ferry companies’ website and even from travel agencies. But the simplest way is to get the tickets from the port. If you plan to travel during the high season (July & August), make sure to buy the tickets several days in advance.
The prices are the same regardless of where you purchase them from. However, when you purchase online and choose to have the tickets delivered at home you will pay a fee. You can also choose to pick up the tickets from the port.
The ferry companies submit their schedules every Friday to the Ministry of Mercantile Marine and in some cases the schedules for July & August become available on online booking sites only several days before the vessels start operating on that route. So make sure to check the schedule several weeks before departure.

Yes, there are.
Tickets can be bought directly from here as early as two months prior to departure. Your travel agent (or any travel agency) can book ferry tickets for you as well but the same restrictions apply. However, your local travel agent will have to buy via a Greek Travel Agent so you are better off booking directly from a reliable source yourself.
You can always buy the tickets directly from the Port of Piraeus in Athens. If you are looking for an economy class ticket you don’t need to worry about booking in advance – except during the weekends in the middle of the high season.
The ticketing office is located at the Port Gate Ε1.
If you buy directly from the port the price might be a little lower than if you buy online. But the difference is not significant.
However, when you book online, service fees may apply based on the country you book from. And if you choose to get the tickets delivered via courier, you’ll pay the shipping fee (you can choose to pick them up in the port).

The ferry schedules available on line may not be very accurate or reliable. This happens because ferry companies submit their schedule to the Ministry of Merchant Marine weekly so the info you see today online might not be accurate next month.
Your best bet is to check this link the day before departure (or the day of before) just to make sure things haven’t changed.

Easter is the most important Greek Orthodox holiday. Although traditionally Easter has been spent with the (extended) family, more and more travelers decide to travel over the holiday.
Spending Easter in Greece can be one of the most rewarding and amazing experiences of your life. Even better, planning for a culinary tour or taking a cooking class in Greece during Easter would allow you to discover more of its traditional foods and customs.
With that being said, here are some tips & tricks on how to find great Easter deals in Greece.
A movable holiday, Orthodox Easter seldom falls on the same day as the Catholic one. Therefore, research before you start booking for your trip to Greece.
If you could take a longer vacation, you may want to arrive before Palm Sunday (a week before Easter) and stay for two weeks. Good Friday is another special day when all housework is banned and everyone fasts.
Should you be flying internationally, it’s wise to book slightly in advance. But, most often, you’d be able to fetch some great deals if you wait until the last minute.
If you are already in Europe, take advantage of the many low-cost carriers flying to Greece, and book within the 4-6 weeks time frame.
And if you have decided on a whim that you want to travel to Greece for the Easter break, then take advantage of last minute deals, whether you are looking for a hotel, rental, or a hotel & flight deal.

When it comes to booking accommodation, we strongly advise you to stick to local businesses. While it may be tempting to use your points and perks to book with a big chain, staying in a locally owned guesthouse will enhance your experience.

Thankfully, accommodation in Greece is not hard to find and, even on the islands, the places start to open up for the season. In fact, Easter is considered the kick-off of the tourist season although the prices never match the ones during the peak of summer.
Should you plan to do a bit of island hopping, you should know that the ferries within Greece are increasing frequency right before Easter. Typically, you cannot book more than two months in advance anyway, but it is advised to book at least a month out.

Do note that public museums and all other public facilities will be closed on Easter Day (Sunday), as well on the following Monday.
Research ahead of time to figure out which tavernas will be open. And of course, your host will always be the best source of information for places to eat and visit.
Why not take advantage of the lovely weather and plan some day trips while you are in Greece over Easter?
Aegina, Hydra, Cape Sounion are very close to Athens. Other day trips from Athens include Mycenae, Rafina, Piraeus, and Epidavros.
And the day trips from Thessaloniki include Meteora and Halkidiki.

Easter generally falls in April, which is right in the middle of spring in Greece. Although on some years, it may all in March or May, though. Expect sunny weather and a lot of wildflowers in bloom.
However, plan to wear layers, as mornings and evenings may still be a bit nippy.
Depending on what you plan to do during your trip, you may want to pack some light hiking boots and definitely don’t leave home without a rain poncho.
It’s always a good idea to bring a daypack, so you can take the essentials with you, whether you visit a city or go for a hike. And while we are at it, a power bank will serve you well, too.

I love to offer gifts that remind us of our travelers or in preparation for visiting a new place. What better excuse to do this than on Valentine’s Day? The below suggestions are great for those in your life who love Greece, have traveled to Greece or plan to visit the country.
Here are the categories of gifts you can browse:
Power Bank
Although it has a capacity of only 10000 MAH, this power bank is light enough to carry in your day pack and supports fast charging. If you’ve ever faced a completely discharged phone as you wanted to capture the most perfect sunset, you know why you need this.
Alaska Bear Natural Silk Sleep Mask
I don’t know about you but I really like it to be dark in the room when I sleep. Sometimes, that’s not exactly possible (hello, street signs peaking through my shutters!) so in comes the sleep mask. Of course, it can also be used successfully while you are in the train, bus or plane (with the mention that it’s always best that one of you is awake and that you don’t force yourself to sleep if you suffer from motion sickness).
Packable Lightweight Travel Hiking Daypack
Compact daypacks with multiple compartments are very useful when you travel. This one is lightweight and folds (so you can stash it in your carry-on until you get to the destination). It can hold up to 33 liters and has to side pockets (for water and umbrella, for example). There are a lot of color choices, too!
Personalized Passport Cover Holder and Initial Luggage Tag Set with Monogram
Want to give a gift that’s both useful and personalized? These passport covers might be the perfect choice. Plus, it has 5 slots combo where you can stash your cards and other documents. The passport wallet size is 5.5×4.1×0.3 inch/14×10.5×1 cm and the luggage tag size is 4.3×2.7 inch/11×7 cm.
