Napo (1942-2020) 23 Jan 2020 8:52 AM (5 years ago)

Born in Rosario in Argentina in January 1942, Antonio Osvaldo Mongiello, known as Napo, published his first drawings in the press of his country in the 1960s, then he left for Europe. He first settled in Italy between 1968 and 1970, where he worked with Linus and Sergeant Kirk, and in La Vanguardia in Spain. In 1970 he returned to Argentina and worked for comics. In 1974, under the penname Napoleón, he published his first cartoon album "Tutti Frutti" with Ediciones del Pregón.
In 1976 he moved to France. There, in the company of the cartoonist Avoine, Barbe, Blachon, Bridenne, Fred, Lacroix, Laville, Loup, Mose, Nicoulaud, Sabatier, Serre, Siné, Soulas and Trez, he founded the Association "Les Humoristes Associés" in 1980. With these cartoonists, he participates in many collective books: "Le Vin", "Le Ski", "Les 7 Péchés capitaux", "La Table", "Politicons", "La Mer", "Jeux d'hiver - Jeux d'humour". He publishes his own books of graphic humour, first with Glénat editions: "C'est la Jungle" and "Le Golf" (a sport he practices assiduously); with Consonances editions "Napo Tango", (a book containing a CD of bandoneon music). On the occasion of his personal exhibitions in Paris, two collections of his works are published in a book form: one by the "Galerie An.Girard" in 2011, the other by the association "Les Humoristes" in 2017. He collaborates with many French newspapers and illustrates books for several publishers: Nathan, Hachette and Belin. He creates posters for Verkerke Publishing in the Netherlands and for Heye Verlag in Germany, he illustrates games, puzzles and calendars.
In 2019 he returns to Argentina with his wife. According to one of his friends, Napo's death was rather sudden and unexpected: "After a fall during a party with friends, he broke part of his pelvis and, badly cured at the hospital, he succumbed. On January 8, 2020, his funeral ceremony took place in the chapel of the Chacarita cemetery in Buenos Aires. Napo was a great colorist who knew how to turn towards us a satirical mirror imbued with poetic wisdom.

RIP Tomi Ungerer (28 November 1931 – 9 February 2019) 10 Feb 2019 7:18 AM (6 years ago)

Yesterday I received the sad news that Tomi Ungerer passed away.

The artist has published over 140 books: books for children, autobiographical books, philosophical writings, satirical and erotic drawings.

On his website, one speaks of  art, such as his "drawings" and "objects". I'd name many of them"cartoons" and "3D cartoons".

Ungerer has his museum in Strasbourg: The Tomi Ungerer Museum for illustration.
Take a look and browse the collection online, of which 863 satirical drawings.
Note that the collection of his erotic drawins is very XXX.

One book of him I own, is Once in a Lifetime (Jonathan Cape Ltd, London, 1984).
"With grim gallows humor he 'sends up' nuclear warfare and the men and woman who would wage it: East meats West under this brilliant draughtman's hand in macabre images the mind will not readily dismiss".
35 years later this cartoon book about the horrors of nuclear confrontation is still very current.

I invite you te visit his official website: www.tominunger.com to meat the artist and his art.

Branded Nation 9 Nov 2018 9:46 PM (6 years ago)

Pol Leurs, not only one of Luxemburg's leading cartoonists, but also one of the most talented cartoonists in Europa and beyond, informed us about a new cartoon book being published in Luxemburg: Branded Nation.

The government branding strategy of the Luxembourg Government has the declared objective of restoring the somewhat tarnished image of Luxembourg. Today the key word is "Let's make it happen"! As part of the 50th anniversary of the Ecological Movement, the CartoonArt.lu and Ecological Movement associations invited caricaturists, cartoonists and illustrators to give THEIR point of view of the Branded Nation. Let yourself be carried away by the creativity and imagination of the 22 designers, by the diversity and richness of their 80 works.

CartoonArt.lu is a Luxembourg non-profit association for the promotion of caricature, cartoon, press drawing and comic strip through publications, exhibitions, information stands, information exchanges, contacts exchange, etc. .
It is aimed at cartoonists, caricaturists and cartoonists, friends and patrons as well as art lovers and collectors. Support CartoonArt.lu as a sympathizing member with an annual fee of 20 euros.

The princess who had everything... 9 Sep 2018 3:24 AM (6 years ago)

I can't remember the time when I bought a fairy tale book before. It must be a long long time ago...

De prinses die alles had
But a few months ago, two in house cartoonists of the ECC published no cartoon, but a real fairy tale book. And I bought it, in trust, without seeing it before. "The princess who had everything" - "De prinses die alles had" (Dutch language/ISBN 978-90-824489-4-8) is the very pleasing result of this successful collaboration.

The great drawings are made by IOA (Nikola Hendrickx) , the story is by AAaRGh (Mario De Koninck). Nikola has done a great job of drawing and painting the fantastic fairy-tale characters which Mario furnished with witty names and a nice story line. It's a children's book, but as an adult I  enjoyed it very much.

What I also liked  was the idea of  printing a "making of " chapter at the end of the book.
Interesting for grownups, but also for children.

In the book I received  a nice letter was added written by Mario and Nikola. They thanked the buyers and ended with the words:
"Do you like the book? Tell it further. Because we like to sell more books. Don't you like it? Be silent. Because we like to sell more books."

I tell it further... and I hope they sell more books. It's good!

More Tie Cartoons... 1 Jul 2018 3:25 AM (6 years ago)

Having read my sentence "It's the only tie book cartoon I know of ..." in a previous article, Jean-Marie was so kind to mention another cartoon book on this theme. It is a portfolio of about forty boards in 21 x 34 cm format, published by Enoteca Italiana.

Year after year this wine association organized a commercial event entitled "Week of Wines" which also presented an exhibition of cartoons related to wine associated with a theme, each time different (gastronomy, theater, discovery of America, art, cinema, the Middle Ages, love, ecology, music ...) which gave rise to the publication of a beautiful portfolio of these works.

The portfolio on the theme of elegance, created for the 25th edition, is dedicated to ties. It has the peculiarity of presenting on the cover folds giving it the appearance of a jacket under which is a shirt with tie coming out of the collar.

In memoriam Louis Vuitton 1 Jul 2018 3:00 AM (6 years ago)

Article by JMB

The French designer Louis Vuitton died on June 21st.
This is his real name and he has no family relationship with the creator of the famous luxury brand.

Louis Vuitton was 87 years old. He graduated from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lyon in 1954 and produced commercials, models, postcards and published in the press (France-Dimanche, Télé 7 jours, Vermot Almanac, Gros Nez Magazine, Une minute de Silence ...). He was familiar with many exhibitions and festivals and was twice awarded at St-Just le Martel: Public Prize in 1998 and Anti-junk food prize in 2003.

He has illustrated children's stories at Editions de St Mont and has self-published five books:

Les recettes du touille-fricasse (The recipes of the tortoise-fricasse) in 1994.  64 pages in format 15 x 21 cm, in texts and drawings illustrating improbable cooking preparations as crazy as humorous.

Y a rien à dire (1997) , Y a rien à lire (1999) and Soyez bref ! (2002) (Nothing to say- Nothing to read -  Be brief!): Collections of 60 speechless humor drawings in 14.5 x 14.5 cm format

-  Monstres et handicapés de la Mythologie  (Monsters and the disabled of Mythology) in 2008: a sum of smiling erudition in 72 pages in A4 format.

Zum Lachen und Zum Heulen (Chaval) - To laugh and howl 1 Apr 2018 10:07 PM (7 years ago)

"Zum Lachen und zum Heulen" contains 400 of the best cartoons of the french cartoonist Chaval (Yvan Francis Le Louarn). It was published in 1969 by Diogenes Verlag AG Zürich (344 pages).

On the inside of the dust cover, there are some words about Chaval, written by German newspapers of that time. Here's a translation from German.

Tagesspiegel, Berlin
"Der ungekrönte König der Pariser Karikaturisten."

The uncrowned king of Parisian cartoonists.

Neue Zürcher Zeitung
"Chaval is ein Meister der gezeichneten Situationskomik, einer Komik, die um so köstlicher ist, je weniger man sie literarisch erzählen kann. Man lacht durch das Auge, nicht durch den Intellekt."

Chaval is a master of drawn situational humor, that is all the more delicious the less one can tell it literarily, one laughs through the eye, not through the intellect.

Der Spiegel, Hamburg
Ein Buster Keaton der Kartikatur
A Buster Keaton of the cartoon

Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

He has one thing in store for the other great French humor: he was able to create symbols beyond the occasion. There are drawings by him that inspire meditation. They seem to replace whole books of profound arguments with the malaise of life.

Die Zeit, Hamburg
Chaval gehört ohne Zweifel zu den bedeutendsten Karikaturisten der Gegenwart.

Chaval is undoubtedly one of the most important caricaturists of the present day.

Die Presse, Wien
Chaval ist ein Klassiker under den Cartoonisten.

Chaval is a classic amongst the cartoonists.

Frankfurter Neue Presse

Chaval: he is the king. He has the craziest ideas of all Parisian cartoonists; that means something. No superfluous line in his pictures, no ornament. It is a landscape of pure, bizarre humor.

Süddeutsche Zeitung, München
Wie Voltaire scheint Chaval lachen zu können und das Vermögen zu besitzen, andere lachen zu machen . Darin besteht, um mit dem grossen Fransozen zu sprechen, seine ganze Genialität.

Like Voltaire, Chaval seems to be laughing and having the ability to make others laugh. In this, speaking like the great French, his whole genius consists.

Chaval - L'Animalier and L'Homme 11 Mar 2018 3:18 AM (7 years ago)

These two pocket editions of cartoons by the great French cartoonistChaval (Yvan Francis Le Louarn, 1915-1968)were published in  1970 by Editions Albin Michel.

Both books need repairing because many pages came loose from the book spine. This is typical for cheap books of that periode as I experienced many times.

About an animalier, Wikipedia tells us:
"An animalier is an artist, mainly from the 19th century, who specializes in, or is known for, skill in the realistic portrayal of animals. "Animal painter" is the more general term for earlier artists. Although the work may be in any genre or format, the term is most often applied to sculptors and painters.

Animalier as a collective plural noun, or animalier bronzes, is also a term in antiques for small-scale sculptures of animals, of which large numbers were produced, often mass-produced, primarily in 19th-century France and to a lesser extent elsewhere in continental Europe."

For us, as for Chaval,  L'animalier is a collection of cartoons based on interaction between humans and animals.

L'Homme means "the man". It is also a  French anthropological journal established in 1961.

Enjoy...

RIP Avoine (1939 - 2017 ) 21 Jan 2018 2:06 AM (7 years ago)

Recently Jean-Marie mailed me the sad news that the great French cartoonist Avoine (Paul Audin) passed away 28 December. Once again, one of the famous Humouristes Associés disappeared.
Les Humouristes Associés , abbreviated HA!  is a collective of French cartoonists who published in self-publishing several collections of comic drawings in the 1980s.

Jean-Marie was so kind to send me information and cartoons to illustrate the nice humor of Avoine, so I could translate it into this article.

This first cartoon was published in the No. 1 of  A Suivre (To be followed) in February 1978, a magazine to which he collaborated until 1985:

Cover over his first album "Faites-moi rire, je pars dans quatre minutes" (Let me laugh, I'm leaving in four minutes). A self-published book distributed by "B Diffusion, undated, published in 1981. 96 pp. under hard cover:

Hereunder 2 cartoons from this album:

Two drawings published in the anthology "Les traits du vin" published in 1996 by "Les Compagnons de la Ficelle" in Saint-Pourçain :

A drawing published in the album "La Fanfare" that he jointly made with Bridenne and Jy, two of his colleagues of the Humoristes Associés:

An advertising realization which unfortunately we do not know the date of publication:
(Dental ABC)

Picture by JMB (2006) showing, de left to right: Avoine, Bridenne, Barbe and Loup:

In the press, Avoine also collaborated on: Minute (his first press drawings in 1962), Paris-Match, Elle, Marie Claire, Marie-France, Le Nouvel Observateur, Gault et Millau, Le Nouvel Économiste, Libération, Lui, Lire, La Recherche, Pomme d’Api, Okapi, Le Point, L'Express, Réalités, Le Figaro, L’Expansion, Le Monde de la musique, Phosphore, Le Monde Dimanche, Vingt ans, L'Équipe magazine, Télérama, Siné Hebdo, Bakchich Hebdo.

He illustrated with 800 (!) drawings the 1979 edition of the Larousse dictionary.

Chas Addams - The Groaning Board 20 Dec 2017 10:28 AM (7 years ago)

Sometimes a book can be in excellent condition, except its dust jacket. This is the case with this nico book by Chas Addams (Simon and Schuster, New York, 1964)). Most of the cartoons in this book were published in The New Yorker between 1954 and 1963.  Almost half the way the book contains a portfolio of colored cartoons.

There is a nice dedication written in the book (I bought it in France) which I translate for you:

"for Drunette, as long as she does not eat her mother. February 1965."

Konk 26 Nov 2017 7:06 AM (7 years ago)

I found this little book accidentally a time ago. Konk, Laurent Fabre (born in Rennes, 1944) is a French editorial cartoonist (dessinateur de presse). The book was published in 1972, collection caliban, les éditions ouvrières. The cartoons in the book are without captions.

As you will read on Wikipedia, Konk is quite controversial and has been abandoned by the left and right press concerning issues of negationism. He draws about immigration, the political class, abortion and homosexuality...

I found this interview (in French) with Konk dated 1992 (ina.fr)

The Rejection Collection: Cartoons You Never Saw, and Never Will See, in The New Yorker (French edition) 1 Nov 2017 7:17 AM (7 years ago)

I found this French edition (2007) of the original book published in 2006: "Dessins Refusés par le New Yorker" some time ago at the Braderie de Lille. For a 3 euro it became mine and the condition of this second hand book is excellent. The price on the back cover says 19,90 euro. The book is still available and price varies: from 37,90 euro on a Dutch site to 9,99 USD on Amazon.

This is what's the book's about:

"Each week about fifty New Yorker cartoonists submit ten ideas, yielding five hundred cartoons for no more than twenty spots in the magazine. Arguably the most brilliant single-panel-gag cartoonists in the world create a bunch of cartoons every week that never see the light of day.

These rejects were piling up in the dusty corners of studios all over the country. Sam Gross, who has been contributing since 1962, has more than 12,000 rejected cartoons. (Seriously. He's been numbering every single cartoon he's ever submitted to The New Yorker since the very beginning.) Enter editor Matthew Diffee. He tapped his fellow cartoonists, asking them to rescue these hilarious lost gems. From the artists' stacks of all-time favorite rejects, Diffee handpicked the standouts -- the cream of the crap -- and created The Rejection Collection, a place where good ideas go when they die. Too risqué, silly, or weird for The New Yorker, the cartoons in this book offer something no other collection has: They have never been seen in print until now.

With a foreword by New Yorker cartoon editor Robert Mankoff that explains the sound judgment, respectability, and scruples not found anywhere in these pages, and handwritten questionnaires that introduce the quirky character of each artist, The Rejection Collection will appeal to fans of The New Yorker...and to anyone with a slightly sick sense of humor."

Otto Lothar 17 Sep 2017 5:42 AM (7 years ago)

Cartoonists are not just artist, they are also kind of doctors or psychiatrists. One of the differences is that they don't earn as much, but sometimes they do the same works. Laughter is the best medicine, isn't it? And aren't cartoonists experts in laughter?

German cartoonist Otto Lothar (°1932) is one of those artists. He was so kind to sent us (t)his book for our collection. It's in German and the purpose is to make people laugh. A noble goal.
The booklet is illustrated with cartoons of Otto (ISBN 978-3-89798-340-3, 1254 pages). It costs 5 euro, a fraction of the cost of a visit to the psychiatrist.

I've translated where's the book about:

"The reader will find many laughs, good-mood tips and anti-depression advice in this 'Laugh-Booklet' in order to defy the adversities of life or simply to laugh again. The volume is enriched with aphorisms, anecdotes, jokes and not least the drawings by cartoonist Otto Lothar: his style is clear, naive and fresh; his cartoons are characterized by fine irony and black humor - they are imaginative everyday philosophy and such an excellent addition to the texts. This little book is a happy present for those who want to laugh. And also for those who are to be cheered, comforted or strengthened."

Thanks a lot Otto!

Bruegel anno 2017 11 Sep 2017 8:28 AM (7 years ago)

This summer the Belgian town of ¨Peer was the place to be.
The small city celebrated that it was 650 ago, it obtained its city rights. One of the most eye-catching activities to celebrate was the Bruegel cartoon festival. It is not very certain at all, but in Peer one believes that  the world famous and great painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525-1530 – 9 September 1569) was born in the village of Grote Brogel, near Peer. Of course Bruegel is Peer's honorary citizen.

Along with the exhibition, presenting excellent cartoons based on the paintings of Bruegel, came an excellent catalogue (128p, full color) . On the cover there is a "state of the art" cartoon by the Belgian cartoonist KLIER (Kurt Valkeneers), living in Peer and president of the jury.

Alive and Kicking 10 Sep 2017 7:29 AM (7 years ago)

It's been quiet on this blog for the last few months. I've taken a break but I did not stop exploring the wonderful world of cartoons and cartoon books.

Many cartoon books were added to my collection and some are quite unique treasures. In the next months to come, I hope to show them to you. Hope you will like them.

Searching for cartoon books in a church, Place du Temple, Braderie de Lille,  Sept 2 , 2017 (France)
Yes, I found one! (for 1 euro)

Good find on Marktplaats.NL -
bought a package of 30 books of which about 12 were cartoon books (not
al the books are displayed here )

Coming soon: Giles's War 1939-45 by Timothy Benson 7 Jun 2017 11:11 AM (7 years ago)

On Tuesday 4th July 2017, a new Giles cartoon book will be presented at the Political Cartoon Gallery in London, together with the opening of the Carl Giles Cartoon Exhitibion.
If you love Giles's cartoons... you can pre-order GILES'S WAR now.

If you are a political cartoon (book) lover, take a look at all the lovely books on the blog of Timothy Benson.

"Few contemporaries captured Britain's indomitable wartime spirit as well or as wittily as the cartoonist Carl Giles. Now, for the first time, the very best of the cartoons he produced between 1939 and 1945 are brought together, including many that have not seen the light of day in over 75 years. As a young cartoonist at Reynold's News and then the Daily Express, Giles's work provided a crucial morale boost - and much-needed laughs - to a population suffering daily privations and danger, and Giles's War shows why. Here are his often hilarious takes on the great events of the war - from the Fall of France, via D-Day, to the final Allied victory - but also his wryly amusing depictions of ordinary people in extraordinary times, living in bombed-out streets, dealing with food shortages, coping with blackouts, railing against bureaucracy and everyday annoyances. It's a brilliantly funny chronicle of our nation's finest hour, as well as a fitting tribute to one of our greatest cartoonists."

Who is is Timothy Benson?

On his blog he writes:

"Dr Tim Benson is Britain's - some say the World's - leading political cartoonoligist. He therefore thinks he knows everything there is to know about political cartoons. A lecturer on cartoons, Benson has also had more books published on the subject than anyone else. He has even acted as an external examiner for postgraduate degrees in cartoons. Now some say Benson is not only self-opinionated and outspoken, but has a big mouth to go with it. So here, on his very own cartoon blog page, he has decided to put it to even greater use."

Yrrahtioneel 4 Jun 2017 6:31 AM (7 years ago)

I'm fond of the cartoons of Yrrah (Harry Lammertink). I recently found 8 of his books on Marktplaats.nl and could buy all for a very nice price.

This is his first book: Yrrahtioneel, published in 1958 (De Arbeiderspers, Amsterdam):

seems to me that the cartoon on the right side is inspired by Magritte...

Humor in medicine 4 Jun 2017 5:55 AM (7 years ago)

Humor in de geneeskunde (humor in medicine) by Eduard H. Hermans (Uitg. Het Wereldvenster, Baarn, Holland, Dutch, 2x 154 pages) consists of 2 books. The first part was published in 1961, the second in 1962.
It's a collection of cartoons about all aspects of medicine. The books starts with an essay about humor in general, followed by an essay about humor in medicine. There are chapters with cartoons about doctors at work, man as patients, woman as patients, odd cases, history of medicine, childbirth, pregnancy, dentist, doctors in uniform, doctors and money, the end of life, etc.
The author gives feedback and commentary on all the cartoons in the book, something that's quite rare in cartoon book land. The cartoons are all numbered.

Enjoy...

cartoon by Chas Addams

As you will notice, the author mentioned TETSU (number 148) as being the cartoonist. This is
wrong: both cartoons are by BOSC.
