2024 Toyota Land Cruiser 1958 : Holiday Adventure to Solomon’s Island, MD 11 Dec 2024 5:19 AM (4 months ago)

The Toyota Land Cruiser nameplate carries a reputation of rugged reliability, adventurous spirit, and timeless appeal. The 2024 Land Cruiser 1958, with its retro-inspired design and modern engineering, lives up to this legacy and redefines off-road capability for a new generation. Recently, we embarked on a holiday road trip to Solomon’s Island, Maryland, blending the charm of a coastal winter retreat along the Chesapeake Bay with the performance and comfort of this iconic vehicle.

First Impressions: Classic Style Meets Modern Performance

The 1958 Edition’s retro aesthetics immediately catch the eye. From its boxy silhouette to the round LED headlights, the Land Cruiser channels vintage charm with a deliberate nod to its origins. The bold “Toyota” lettering across the grille further emphasizes its heritage-inspired design. Beneath this nostalgic exterior lies a modern off-road warrior. Powered by the iForce Max hybrid engine, the 2.4-liter turbocharged setup delivers 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque, ensuring confident performance on highways and scenic byways alike.

At a starting MSRP of $55,950, the 1958 Edition offers an accessible entry into the Land Cruiser lineup. Key features include heated fabric seats, a Smart Key System with push-button start, and a Blind Spot Monitor (BSM). Modern conveniences like wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto compatibility, and automatic climate control provide the perfect balance of technology and practicality.

A Slice of Coastal Charm and Holiday Magic

Solomon’s Island, a picturesque destination along the Chesapeake Bay, offered the ideal setting for our holiday adventure. The scenic waterfront town is rich with history, art, and festive charm. We recommend stopping by the Calvert Marine Museum, where you can explore exhibits on the Chesapeake’s maritime life and climb the historic Drum Point Lighthouse. Art lovers will find inspiration at Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center, a tranquil space adorned with seasonal displays and sculptures that delight all ages.

For a lively evening, The Tiki Bar is a popular hangout to mingle with local boaters, while Stoney’s Clarke’s Landing provides a warm and inviting spot to enjoy fresh seafood with breathtaking waterfront views. The holiday lights and decorations throughout the island created a magical atmosphere that paired beautifully with our cozy road trip.

Winter Ready: Comfort and Convenience

The Land Cruiser 1958 proved to be an exceptional companion for a winter road trip. The dual-zone automatic climate control system allowed us to tailor temperatures for both the driver and passengers, ensuring maximum comfort during the chilly December days. Heated fabric seats were a welcome feature on frosty mornings, and the heated steering wheel was a luxurious touch that kept our hands warm as we navigated the winding roads.

The Land Cruiser’s spacious interior proved invaluable for a family trip. With ample room for holiday gifts and luggage, it accommodated everything we needed for the week. Five USB-C ports kept everyone and their gadgets charged and happy. Adding to the festive spirit, we played holiday classics through the six-speaker audio system via wireless Apple CarPlay. The sound quality was crisp and immersive, turning our drive into a traveling holiday celebration. Combined with the Land Cruiser’s smooth ride and thoughtful design, these features elevated the entire journey.

The Off-Road Legacy, Even on Pavement

While our adventure didn’t include rugged trails, the Land Cruiser’s off-road heritage was undeniable. The 1958 Edition features locking center and rear differentials, a two-speed transfer case, and CRAWL Control for those who seek challenging terrains. Even on the mostly paved and occasionally rustic roads of Southern Maryland, the suspension provided a composed and comfortable ride.

The elevated driving position offered excellent visibility, enhancing confidence on narrow, winding streets. The hybrid powertrain delivered smooth acceleration and fuel efficiency, reminding us that this vehicle is built for both adventure and everyday practicality.

Conclusion: The Perfect Blend of Legacy and Adventure

The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser 1958 is more than just a vehicle; it’s a celebration of adventure and a tribute to timeless design. This SUV seamlessly integrates modern features with a nostalgic nod to its storied past. Starting at $55,950, it offers notable value for drivers seeking versatility, comfort, and capability.

Five Great Destinations for Winter Travel 30 Nov 2024 8:56 PM (5 months ago)

For people who love the winter and enjoy winter sports, knowing great places to travel and enjoy the best of the season is important. There are many places in the country that are perfect for enjoying the winter. In fact, in some states, winter weather arrives early and stays around until mid-spring.

Winter enthusiasts can enjoy sports and the great snowy season on both the east and west coast areas as well as the mid-west. In fact, the U.S. has an abundance of states where winter festivities and winter sports are the mainstay of their livelihood. But some areas rise above the rest and are considered to be some of the best in the country and comparable with other famous winter spots around the globe.

Some of the best U.S. winter spots for winter enthusiasts include: Colorado, the Sierra Mountains and Vermont. Each of these locations in the United States offer significant opportunities for all types of winter enjoyment needs. From quaint villages and villas nestled on mountainsides, to private spas and resorts. These three states boast of: abundant ski slopes, skating, sports trails and winter lodges in many of their accommodations. For people who love winter, these destinations are sure to bring the best enjoyment for the winter weather enthusiast.

For those who are looking for the best winter travel spots to get away from the cold, Florida and the U.S. Virgin Islands rank at the top of our list. These areas are perfect for enjoying tropical warm bright sunshine. Since just over half of the United States experiences the colds of winter with piles of snow, there are plenty of reasons to want to get away to warmer climates too.

1) Colorado

Of all the states in the country, Colorado is well known as the winter paradise state. It has some of the most beautiful mountainous regions in the country as it besets the majestic Rocky Mountain range. The state has several well-known winter resort towns including: Aspen, Telluride, Vail, Estes and Steamboat Springs.

Each of these areas in Colorado feature many rustic accommodation locations as well as resort accommodations. Most feature ski lodges with abundant choices for winter sports. Avid winter enthusiasts can: ski, snowboard, snowshoe, cross country ski, ice skate and snowmobile in many of these locations. These areas are towns and villages that are also well known for a wide variety of diverse restaurant choices including classic and fine dining. In addition, many of these areas have quaint and high-end shopping in abundance.

2) The Sierras

The Sierra Mountains cover several states known for winter sports. The Sierra’s infamous mountains straddle both Nevada and California and are well known to be the perfect winter getaway for winter enthusiasts of all types. In the Nevada Sierra region, Lake Tahoe is widely known as the best of the best for winter enthusiasts. Like the beauty of Colorado’s Rockies, Lake Tahoe is surrounded by the Sierra Mountain range which is part of a volcanic arc.

The same is true on the California side of the Sierras the region known as the High Sierra which also has part of Lake Tahoe in it. It is one of the top west coast snow resort getaway locations. California’s Mammoth Lakes region is also a beautiful winter wonderland during winter’s peak season.

3) Vermont

The state of Vermont is known as the perfect winter getaway on the east coast. It is widely known to have an abundance of ski and winter weather sports resorts. By contrast to the towering mountains of the west and mid-west, Vermont’s Green Mountains are gently rolling but lack nothing in winter sports. Stowe Vermont is considered one of America’s classic rustic snowy resort towns.

Manchester, Vermont is also widely known as a delightful winter getaway for winter sports. Both towns have an abundance of winter sports venues for: downhill skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, skating and more. Both towns offer many winter festivals as well as great dining, shopping and resort-spa vacation locations in abundance.

4) Florida

The Sunshine State, as Florida is known by, is the state that exudes the most sun and beach fun of any of the lower 48 states. It has miles of soft white powder beaches on both the Atlantic and Gulf Coast. The Atlantic water tends to run cooler and features powerful classic waves for surfing.

Daytona Beach, which is in northern Atlantic region of Florida, is one of America’s greatest treasures. It is one of the only beaches in America where you can drive onto the sand packed beach with your car, park and enjoy the fun and sun in minutes.

Southern Florida has the Keys and the Everglades. This area is known for its slow pace and wild nature adventures. The Gulf Coast region of the state is known for incredible beaches, softer waves, warmer water and brilliant sunsets. On the Gulf side of Florida, wildlife regions are in abundance as well as little island getaways.

Other amazing Florida adventures include Anna Maria Island, Orlando’s Disney World and Universal Studios as well as the east coast’s St. Augustine.

5) The U.S. Virgin Islands

The U.S. Virgin Islands are some of America’s best tropics. In fact, these islands have the feel of many of the most exotic beaches in the world for tourists. St. Thomas, Sr. Croix and St. John are all a part of the U.S. Virgin Island chain and are part of the same chain of islands as the British Virgin Islands. Some of the islands were damaged extensively in the 2017 hurricane season. But there is still an abundance of winter getaway resorts with beautiful tropics and pristine turquoise waters that are operational.

Restoring Adventure: Our 1989 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Build 27 Nov 2024 1:00 PM (5 months ago)

In the off-road and overlanding world, the Jeep name is synonymous with adventure, durability, and a storied history. While Wranglers and Gladiators often take center stage, there’s an entire world of vintage Jeeps that deserve the spotlight. Enter our latest project: a 1989 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. This iconic full-size Jeep is more than just a restoration—it’s a celebration of Jeep’s diversity and heritage.

We’re thrilled to announce that we’re partnering with the Myrtle Beach Jeep Jam to bring this exciting build to life. Together, we’re transforming this classic vehicle into the Surf Crawler—a show-stopping event build for their 2025 event. The Surf Crawler will honor Jeep’s legacy while embracing a laid-back coastal vibe, blending vintage charm with modern upgrades to create a vehicle that’s both nostalgic and adventure-ready.

Why the Grand Wagoneer?

The 1989 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is a true classic, combining rugged utility with upscale comfort in a way few vehicles can. This particular Wagoneer came to us in fantastic condition, featuring a beautifully restored body but an underperforming AMC 360 V8 engine—making it the perfect base for the ambitious upgrades we have planned.

What makes this build even more exciting is its mission. The Surf Crawler will represent the 2025 Myrtle Beach Jeep Jam as a rolling ambassador, connecting with off-road enthusiasts and showcasing the enduring appeal of vintage Jeeps. Whether cruising along coastal roads or turning heads at Jeep meetups across the Southeast, the Surf Crawler will celebrate the timeless spirit of adventure.

The Build Plan: Function Meets Style

Turning this classic into a standout event vehicle requires thoughtful upgrades across several key areas:

Each phase of the transformation will be documented and shared with our audience, bringing the community along for the ride.

More Than a Build: A Tribute to Jeep Culture

This project is about more than just creating a cool event vehicle—it’s about honoring Jeep’s rich history and the community that supports it. The Grand Wagoneer stands as a testament to the diversity of Jeep’s legacy, bridging the gap between past and present. From the Willys to the Wagoneer, every Jeep model plays a role in this storied heritage, and the Surf Crawler celebrates that journey.

As the official 2025 Myrtle Beach Jeep Jam Event Build, the Surf Crawler will make appearances at regional car shows, Jeep meetups, parades, and off-road events before taking center stage at next October’s Jeep Jam. Along the way, it will spark conversations about the enduring appeal of vintage Jeeps and encourage more enthusiasts to embrace these classics as part of their own adventures.

Want to Get Involved?

This project is a collaborative effort, and we’re inviting brands, sponsors, and vendors to join us on this journey. Whether your expertise lies in off-road accessories, lighting, tires, or performance upgrades, this is your chance to showcase your products and connect with a passionate off-road and overlanding community.

Interested in partnering on this build? Reach out to Philip Van der Vossen at PVanderVossen@NSPromos.com. Let’s work together to create a vehicle that embodies the heart of off-roading and inspires adventurers for years to come.

Stay tuned as we and the Myrtle Beach Jeep Jam team bring the Surf Crawler to life. We’ll share updates throughout the build process and reveal the final product at Jeep Jam 2025. This isn’t just a restoration—it’s a celebration of everything that makes off-road travel and Jeep culture unforgettable.

Toyota’s 2024 SEMA Builds: A Bold Showcase of Adventure and Imagination 6 Nov 2024 8:00 AM (5 months ago)

The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show is the ultimate platform where the automotive industry’s biggest players unveil their most daring creations. This year, Toyota didn’t just show up; they stole the spotlight. With an exhibit rooted in innovation, heritage, and lifestyle appeal, Toyota’s 2024 lineup at Booth No. 22200 in the Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center was an ode to the limitless possibilities of vehicle customization.

What made Toyota’s 2024 SEMA display different wasn’t just the lineup of gleaming metal and rubber—it was the stories each vehicle told. These builds weren’t just about horsepower and rugged looks; they were about sparking the imagination and connecting with diverse lifestyles. From nostalgic throwbacks to high-tech innovations, Toyota’s showcase was a reminder that adventure comes in many forms.

1. 4Runner TRD Surf Concept

For those who have ever daydreamed of California’s sun-kissed coastline, the 4Runner TRD Surf Concept was a show-stealer. This build wasn’t just another rugged SUV; it was a throwback to the laid-back surf culture that made the original 4Runner iconic. With a removable top and retro design cues, this 2025 4Runner looked ready to haul surfboards down the Pacific Coast Highway. Toyota cleverly paired nostalgic charm with the modern-day capability we expect from their lineup, making it perfect for those who see their SUV as a gateway to adventure rather than just a daily driver.

2. CALTY Land Cruiser ROX

In an era where SUV designs are often criticized for being too sanitized, Toyota’s Land Cruiser ROX felt like a breath of fresh, open-air freedom. Crafted by Toyota’s CALTY Design Research team, this topless cruiser blended the brand’s rugged history with sleek, modern engineering. It wasn’t just about off-road readiness; it was about feeling the wind in your hair while tackling rough trails—a nod to simpler, more adventurous times in Toyota’s past.

3. GR86 Rally Legacy Concept

Toyota’s love letter to its rally racing heritage came to life with the GR86 Rally Legacy Concept, an unorthodox blend of the GR86 body with a GR Corolla’s turbocharged engine and GR-FOUR AWD system. It’s not every day that a concept like this rolls into view, paying homage to the brand’s rally past while hinting at an exciting future for the GR line. Built for adrenaline junkies who miss the raw, gritty feel of classic rally cars, this concept turned heads and had fans wishing they could take it for a spin through winding mountain roads.

4. Ultimate Tailgate Tundra

Tailgating has never looked as intense as it did with the Ultimate Tailgate Tundra. Most people think of a portable grill and a cooler when they hear “tailgating,” but Toyota had bigger ideas—much bigger. With five 55-inch TV screens and a canopy large enough to cover an entire tailgating party, this truck transformed into an audio-visual extravaganza that could rival any sports bar. It’s the kind of vehicle that makes you question whether you should even bother with game tickets or just park this Tundra in the lot and let the party unfold around you.

5. Toyota RAV-X Concept

The RAV-X Concept made a bold statement for crossover fans who crave more than just pavement. Developed by Toyota’s Service Parts and Accessories Development (SPAD) team, this concept was a nod to the Dakar Rally, with aggressive off-road features that seemed to taunt the wildest trails to do their worst. With its lifted suspension and race-inspired details, the RAV-X demonstrated that you don’t need to choose between practicality and thrill-seeking—it’s possible to have both.

6. #84 Tacoma TRD ProRunner Race Concept

Collaborating with racing legend Jimmie Johnson, Toyota introduced the #84 Tacoma TRD ProRunner Race Concept, an absolute beast with a lightning-themed “mud bath” livery that looked ready to tackle any desert challenge. This was not just a display piece; it was a testament to Toyota’s deep roots in off-road racing. Starting with a humble Tacoma SR5, the transformation into a Baja-worthy race truck was a showcase of what TRD’s expertise can achieve when combined with racing pedigree.

Toyota’s 2024 SEMA showcase was a masterclass in tapping into the collective dreams of car lovers everywhere. Each build—from the breezy Land Cruiser ROX to the tailgating powerhouse Tundra—told a story that resonated with a different kind of enthusiast. Whether it was nostalgia, performance, style, or sheer fun, Toyota delivered with a lineup that was as varied as the crowd that attended SEMA.

These builds weren’t just exercises in what could be done with a toolbox and imagination—they were invitations to think about what’s next for Toyota owners. One thing was clear: whether you’re a weekend adventurer, a die-hard rally fan, or someone who just loves to push the boundaries, Toyota showed that there’s always more to discover on—and off—the road.

Reviving an Icon: Scout Motors Introduces the Traveler SUV and Terra Truck 25 Oct 2024 7:45 AM (6 months ago)

Scout Motors has officially revealed its highly anticipated concepts, the Scout Traveler SUV and Scout Terra truck, marking an exciting new era for off-road vehicles. These rugged, adventure-ready vehicles draw inspiration from the iconic Scout vehicles produced by International Harvester between 1961 and 1980. Designed in Michigan and set for production in South Carolina, they’re not just about nostalgic appeal—they’re poised to be trailblazers in modern off-road electric performance.

Reviving the Spirit of Adventure

Scout Motors set out to stay true to its roots by combining classic, no-nonsense design with modern capabilities. The new Scout Traveler and Terra feature bold, rugged lines, short overhangs, and muscular stances that make them look ready to tackle any terrain. The design team aimed for a simple but iconic aesthetic, highlighted by distinctive front and rear black masks and seamless LED daytime running lamps that wrap around the vehicle like a belt.

Built for True Off-Road Enthusiasts

The Scout Traveler and Terra are built on a robust body-on-frame chassis with a solid rear axle and mechanical lockers for serious off-road performance. Both vehicles offer up to 35-inch tires, over a foot of ground clearance, and nearly three feet of water fording capability, making them ready for any challenge on or off the beaten path.

Towing capacity is also a standout feature. The Terra truck is designed to tow over 10,000 pounds, while the Traveler SUV can handle over 7,000 pounds, both with nearly 2,000 pounds of payload capacity. And with the ability to accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 3.5 seconds, thanks to nearly 1,000 lb.-ft. of torque, these Scouts are powerful contenders in the EV space.

EV and Range-Extended Options

Understanding that EV range anxiety is a real concern for many drivers, Scout Motors has created options to meet different needs. Both the Traveler and Terra will be available as fully electric vehicles with up to 350 miles of range or as range-extended models featuring a built-in gas generator that pushes the range beyond 500 miles. This unique approach ensures that off-road enthusiasts can venture further with confidence, whether they prefer pure electric or hybrid power.

The Connection Machine

These Scouts are more than just vehicles; they’re designed as “connection machines,” built to facilitate experiences with family and friends. Both models include versatile cargo areas, durable materials, and practical storage solutions. The Terra truck comes with a 5.5-foot pickup bed featuring power outlets to run tools or camping gear, while the Traveler SUV boasts a split tailgate for easy cargo access and protection from the elements.

Inside, both vehicles feature a clean, user-friendly layout with real knobs and buttons for intuitive control. The Scout Community UX interface offers a balance of digital and tactile controls, ensuring that essential functions aren’t buried in touchscreens. With over-the-air software updates and remote diagnostics, Scout’s modern technology enhances user convenience without compromising simplicity.

Direct-to-Consumer Approach

Scout Motors is shaking up the traditional vehicle-buying process by offering direct-to-consumer sales through an exclusive retail network. This approach promises transparent pricing, quick transactions, and a seamless, customer-first experience. Five Great Roof Top Tent Brands 16 Oct 2024 12:04 AM (6 months ago)

If you’re an off-road enthusiast who loves camping or overlanding, chances are you’ve heard of rooftop tents. These ingenious shelters were initially designed by adventurous campers aiming to sleep off the ground to avoid predators. Over time, rooftop tents have evolved into a luxurious and convenient camping solution that brings comfort to the wildest of adventures. Today, we’ll explore five top-notch rooftop tent brands that offer far more than just a safe place to sleep. Let’s dive in!

What Makes Rooftop Tents Special?

Rooftop tents are distinct from traditional ground tents in several ways. They attach directly to your vehicle’s roof rack and crossbars, lifting you off the ground and providing a stable, elevated sleeping platform. Most rooftop tents come with built-in foam mattresses for added comfort and attachable ladders for easy access. While they come with a higher price tag, ranging from $1,000 to $4,500, the convenience, comfort, and security they offer make them worth every penny.

1. Roofnest Falcon Tent

First up is the Roofnest Falcon, a game-changer for adventurers seeking both functionality and style. This tent is designed for quick and easy setup, allowing you to be ready for bed in just minutes. Its sleek, low-profile design makes it aerodynamic and easy to store when not in use.

The Falcon’s built-in foam mattress ensures a comfortable night’s sleep, while its versatility sets it apart from the competition. It’s compatible with extra crossbars, which means you can haul additional gear on top of the tent. Roofnest’s direct-to-consumer model also helps keep prices competitive by cutting out the middleman.

2. iKamper Tent

iKamper, based in Kent, Washington, is renowned for its high-quality hard-shell rooftop tents. These tents are built to withstand extreme weather conditions, thanks to their robust dual-wall design and a 1.6-inch thick mattress that provides excellent insulation.

One of the standout features of iKamper tents is their ease of setup. They are lightweight and can be pitched in a matter of minutes, making them ideal for spontaneous adventures. Additionally, iKamper tents come with several mesh storage pockets to help you keep your gear organized. The tents also feature a condensation drip blocker, ensuring you stay dry even in damp conditions.

3. Thule Tepui Tent

Tepui, a pioneer in the U.S. rooftop tent market, was aquired by Thule in 2018. Thule Tepui tents are known for their durability, ease of use, and reasonable pricing, making them an excellent choice for first-time buyers and casual weekend campers.

Thule Tepui offers a comprehensive range of camping accessories, from LED light strips to awnings, sheet sets, and boot bags, ensuring you have everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable camping experience. Their tents are built to last, providing a reliable shelter no matter where your adventures take you.

4. Smittybilt Overland Tent

Designed with overlanders in mind, the Smittybilt Overland tent offers a spacious interior that can accommodate up to four people. Its sturdy aluminum frame and durable all-weather ripstop exterior make it suitable for year-round use.

Smittybilt’s attention to detail is evident in features like the complete cover for the entryway, interior LED strip lighting, waterproof exterior, and mosquito screen. The high-density mattress ensures a comfortable sleep, although the tent’s bulkiness and higher price might be drawbacks for some. Nonetheless, it’s a solid choice for those who prioritize durability and space.

5. Freespirit Recreation Rooftop Tent

Perfect for families, the Freespirit Recreation tent can comfortably fit three to five people. Its spacious design includes 360-degree windows for panoramic views and a large awning that covers the entryway, making it ideal for enjoying the great outdoors.

While the Freespirit Recreation tent is durable and roomy, it’s also on the expensive side, averaging around $2,500. It’s bulky and heavy at 172 pounds, requiring more than one person to set up quickly. However, its size and comfort make it a worthwhile investment for families looking to camp in style.

Final Thoughts

Rooftop tents have become increasingly popular in the U.S., offering a level of comfort and camping efficiency that traditional ground tents simply can’t match. We’ve reviewed five top brands, focusing on ease of use, comfort, versatility, durability, and value.

When choosing a rooftop tent, prioritize one that’s easy to set up. After all, you don’t want to spend hours wrestling with your tent when you could be enjoying the great outdoors. Look for versatile designs that can be used wherever your vehicle can go, and check if the brand offers necessary accessories and reputable customer support.

Comfort and durability should never be compromised. Whether you’re camping solo or with family, your rooftop tent should be a valuable asset. Even budget-friendly options start at over $1,000, so make sure your investment is worthwhile. Using this guide, you can choose the best rooftop tent for your needs and get ready for your next off-road adventure. Happy camping!

Exploring Mountain Bike Trails in Virginia City Nevada 13 Oct 2024 8:00 AM (6 months ago)

Conventionally you might think about hiking or using Jeep trails to go explore the history of the wild west mining boomtowns. However, Virginia City, Nevada has a bunch of bike trails that you can take to explore the history of what was once a vibrant mining town and today is one of the top places anywhere in the world to go explore an authentic wild west town that somehow manages to be family-friendly despite it’s rough and tumble appearance.

Ralph Waldo Emerson may have not been a cyclist when he wrote “it’s not the destination, it’s the journey,” but he certainly invoked the experience that is the epitome of increasingly popular trail and off-road cycling. Virginia City, Nevada, is precisely this type of bike destination. Located 22 miles from the Reno-Tahoe International Airport, the Virginia City Historic District includes the 19th-century mining towns of Virginia City, Gold Hill, Silver City and Dayton, each connected by old stagecoach roads, trails and expansive public lands in a mountainous high desert setting. Rides through this region are a journey back in time to its boomtown heyday where discovery of cultural sites, historic landmarks and mining artifacts are around each off-road turn.

Virginia City Bike Trails Take You Through A Truly Historic District

The rise of Virginia City began in 1859 when an exceptional silver and gold strike was made. The discovery was named the Comstock Lode where nearly seven million tons of ore was extracted from 1860 to 1880, producing what today would equal approximately $700 million in profits. Wealth from the Comstock Lode contributed much to Nevada’s development as well as to the rapid growth of San Francisco. By 1881, the Comstock Lode was exhausted, and Virginia City shrank from a bustling industrial and cultural epicenter with a population of 25,000 to just several hundred residents.Today, the Virginia City Historic District is an impressive preservation of more than 400 19th century buildings, sites and abandoned mines.

Rides in this region are reminiscent of old western films with sights of still-operating steam trains, mines, abandoned camps and wild horses, all while navigating a mix of stagecoach roads, double track and singletrack. Zoom into a satellite map of the area and bike visitors find a seemingly endless crisscross of trails that wind through the region. In fact, 67% of the state of Nevada is public lands and the area surrounding the Virginia City Historic District is a representation of this open space. It’s easy for adventure cyclists to seek the road less traveled, discover cultural sites and witness mining activities; all while being comfortably close to the amenities of the nearby towns.

Jumbo Grade

Jumbo Grade Road, also known as Ophir Grade, was founded in 1907. Originally, the stagecoach grade accessed the small Jumbo mining camp, but was abandoned in 1921 when the Comstock boom faded. Today’s Jumbo Grade follows the same route, starts as a paved road, transitions to an off-road trail, rises above Washoe Valley and climbs near to the summit of Mt. Davidson before dropping into Virginia City, providing amazing views along the way. A straightforward loop from Reno can be ridden with a southbound start on Old U.S. 395 to Washoe City, ascent up Jumbo Grade, through Virginia City and a descent down Toll Road. This ride is approximately 40 miles and 3,500 feet.

Toll Road

Toll Road, or otherwise known as Old Geiger Grade, was the original gateway to Virginia City. Constructed in 1862, coaches, wagons and mule-team freighters frequented the road as the most direct route between the Comstock Lode and Reno, albeit a dangerous and private road where tolls were collected. The original Geiger Grade was improved in 1936 as part of the New Deal Works Progress Administration. The new road is a wide, paved automobile route that bypasses the steepest grades, leaving the Old Geiger Grade to be enjoyed exclusively by mountain bikers, gravel riders, hikers and four wheelers. Toll Road is a thigh-burning climb that ascends 1,400 feet in just three miles. Fitness gains aside, Toll Road rewards with fantastic views of Mt. Rose, Slide Mountain and the Sierras. Once nearly to the top in Virginia Highlands, riders can find the informative Nevada Historical Trail Marker 211. Toll Road is a fantastic kick-off to routes that then continue throughout the elevations of the Virginia City Historic District.

Six Mile Canyon

Six Mile Canyon, also known as State Route 79, runs due east from Virginia City and connects with Highway 50 near Dayton. In 1859, Six Mile Canyon was the site of the area’s first mining efforts and the reported start of the “Rush to Washoe” where ‘49ers from California flocked the region in search of wealth. Today, Six Mile Canyon is marked with abandoned mills, concrete ruins and once-flourishing camps. This ride east is also a beautiful sight for wildflowers in the spring, cottonwood-lined creeks and lichen-covered rock cliffs.

Seven Mile Canyon

Seven Mile Canyon Road gives riders a taste of the challenging network of double and single track that twists and turns through the Virginia Range. This is a punchy dirt road that detours Virginia City’s main route, Geiger Grade Road. Along the way, riders will pedal past the headframe of the Combination Shaft, Nevada’s second deepest mine shaft. Easily underestimated to the naked eye, the headframe sits atop a 3,250 foot deep mine shaft that was created in 1875 and is the deepest shaft ever sunk to explore the Comstock Lode. Seven Mile Canyon Road can be ridden in either direction from its junction at Six Mile Canyon Road to Geiger Grade.

Drones : Future of Off-Road Navigation? 8 Oct 2024 1:36 PM (6 months ago)

Off-roading is all about conquering the unknown. But what if we could see around the bend, over the hill, and through the thick brush before we even got there? Thanks to some innovative thinking from automakers like GM and Rivian, that future might be closer than we think.

Imagine this: you’re deep in the backcountry, navigating treacherous terrain. Suddenly, a drone launches from your vehicle, soaring ahead to scout the path. It scans for obstacles, measures inclines, and assesses the overall difficulty of the route. Then, it sends all that data back to your vehicle, suggesting the best way forward. Sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie, right? Well, it might not be far off.

GM filed a patent in 2022 for a drone-based off-road navigation system. Their vision involves a drone equipped with sensors like radar and lidar, scouting ahead of the vehicle and relaying information about the terrain. This could include everything from the steepness of a hill to the depth of a water crossing. The vehicle’s computer then processes this data to recommend the best route or even multiple options based on difficulty level.

But GM isn’t alone in this race. Rivian filed a patent for a similar system even earlier in 2022, although their focus seems to be on shorter-range use, like spotting obstacles immediately ahead rather than scouting entire trails. By identifying obstacles and suggesting optimal paths, the drone would essentially function as a robot spotter.

While this technology is still in its early stages, the potential benefits for off-road enthusiasts are immense. Not only could it make off-roading safer by identifying potential hazards, but it could also enhance the overall experience by providing more information about the terrain and suggesting optimal routes.

Of course, there are still challenges to overcome. Issues like battery life, drone reliability, and regulatory hurdles need to be addressed before we see this technology become mainstream. But the potential is undeniable. While help with off-road navigation is a welcome development, we’d love an autonomous drone that shoots photo and video footage of our rig automatically while off-roading. For now we’ll just have to keep relying on our Skydio drone, for capturing semi-autonomous footage like this :

Five Great Destinations for Fall Travel 25 Sep 2024 8:00 AM (7 months ago)

Summer seems to be the most popular time for people to travel, while fall often gets overlooked. There are advantages to planning a fall trip, or maybe more than one. In many destination cities, prices can be lower and the crowds, not as bad. Temperatures can be much more pleasant as well. One can often have a great experience in places that are maybe out of their price range in the summer by heading to the location in the fall instead. Here are five great places to check out in fall.

5) Portland, Oregon

Portland Oregon is a great city with its very own unique identity. Portland is proud of its weirdness and does not try to hide it. The McMenamins locations come to mind when one thinks of Portland. This outfit buys up old buildings, renovates them and re-purposes them into something interesting. For example they have the former Kennedy school where you can stay overnight and have a drink at the multiple bars around campus. Portland also boasts a great public transportation system, so getting to your destinations around the city should not be a problem. Have dinner, catch a movie, and have a nightcap all at the beautifully restored Bagdad Theater, also a McMenamins property, in the Hawthorne district.

4) Los Angeles, California

Los Angeles had a pretty hot summer this year. Miserably hot on some days. In the fall the temperatures mellow out back the 80’s making it much more comfortable to wall down the Hollywood Walk of Fame in West Hollywood. While there, check out all of the famous people’s hand prints in front of the TCL Chinese Theater. Neither of these cost any money and can be fun to walk and bar hop or romantic to walk with a date. Pop into the Rusty Mullet for some drinks and good music, but no dancing. Universal Studios is also in the Los Angeles area. The park can be busy no matter what time of year you go, but if you can pull off going during the week, the crowds will be considerably smaller. There is also an app you can download on your phone that will tell you where the shortest lines are at any given time.

3) Yosemite National Park, California

While Yosemite National Park has been closed due to wild fires that are raging all over California, it is a breath taking sight to see once the fires are out. If you love hiking and the outdoors, this will be one of your favorite places to go to time and time again. Other than the famous Yosemite falls, there are various other waterfalls and features to check out. Lodging options range from the prestigious Majestic Yosemite Hotel (formerly the Ahwahnee Hotel) where there are top notch accommodations to the minimal frills camp grounds in and around the valley. No matter how you choose to sleep, the beauty of the valley will take your breath away. You may have to book your accommodations more than a year out. That is how popular the valley is.

2) Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas is non-stop action. It is also extremely hot in the summer, not that it really matters if you are going to sit in an air conditioned casino and gamble. There are some really cool things to do and see around the Las Vegas Area that would probably be more enjoyable in the fall. Hoover Dam is a sight to see. The size of the damn alone is mesmerizing. Walking across the damn one can really appreciate just what an accomplishment this creation is. Once again, if hiking and nature are your preferred vacation activities, Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area will be just what you are looking for. You will be impressed by the red sandstone formations and possibly some waterfalls. All of this in a more bearable heat than the summer scorchers they have in Las Vegas. Of course you can always head back to the drinking, gambling, clubbing, and partying life of the Las Vegas strip. Fremont street can be a lot of fun as well.

1) San Antonio, Texas

San Antonio is known for the popular River Walk. Much like the Las Vegas Strip, the drinking in public laws are relaxed around the River Walk area. There are riverboat tours available, restaurants and lodging nearby and of course a great nightlife and bar scene including popular tourist sports, Dick’s Last Resort and Coyote Ugly, along with many others. There is often some sort of special event going on at the River Walk as well. Texans are a proud people which can be seen when someone yells “Texas” loudly and is greeted with hoots and hollers from other river walk patrons. Texas can be hot and humid in the summer, so fall may be a better time for the River Walk in San Antonio. Lastly, Remember the Alamo!

Ineos Halts Grenadier Production Due to Supply Chain Problem 21 Sep 2024 5:00 AM (7 months ago)

Ineos Automotive, the British manufacturer of the Grenadier off-road SUV, has announced a temporary suspension of production due to significant supply chain disruptions. A key component supplier, which has been experiencing financial difficulties, has been unable to meet the company’s demand for parts.

The production pause is expected to last until late 2024 or early 2025, causing a significant setback for Ineos’ ambitious plans to establish itself in the rugged off-road vehicle market. Despite the halt, the company has assured its customers that it has a sufficient stock of already-built Grenadiers to meet some demand during this period.

While the exact nature of the supply chain issue has not been disclosed, the disruption highlights the ongoing challenges facing many industries as they grapple with the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, global economic uncertainties, and geopolitical tensions. Ineos Automotive joins a growing list of companies that have been forced to adjust their production schedules due to supply chain constraints.

The company has stated that it is working closely with its suppliers and exploring alternative sourcing options to minimize the impact of the production pause and resume operations as soon as possible.

2025 Jeep Gladiator: A More Accessible, Feature-Rich Off-Roader 19 Sep 2024 11:28 AM (7 months ago)

Off-road enthusiasts and adventure travelers will be thrilled by the latest updates to the 2025 Jeep Gladiator, which brings significant enhancements to both convenience and capability. Jeep’s iconic pickup truck is poised to dominate trails and desert dunes alike with its updated features, all while becoming more accessible to a broader range of buyers.

Jeep has made the decision to streamline the Gladiator lineup by equipping all models with an eight-speed automatic transmission, phasing out the manual gearbox entirely. This change, combined with standard power locks and windows across the range, reflects Jeep’s commitment to making the Gladiator more user-friendly without sacrificing its rugged DNA. These updates are in line with what modern adventurers expect from a capable off-road vehicle.

The heart of the 2025 Gladiator remains its 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine, which produces 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. This powerhouse, paired with Dana 44 solid front and rear axles, offers best-in-class towing capacity of up to 7,700 pounds. For those planning more eco-friendly expeditions, Jeep has announced that a 4xe plug-in hybrid version will join the lineup later in the year, offering an electrified option without compromising off-road capability.

Visually, the 2025 Gladiator will stand out even more with two new exterior color options: Fathom Blue and the military-inspired ’41 olive drab. These fresh hues, paired with the truck’s open-air design, give buyers a way to express their personal style while out on their adventures. The introduction of Active Cabin Ventilation further enhances the off-road experience, allowing drivers to pre-condition their vehicle via the Jeep Connect app—perfect for those hot, dusty days on the trail.

Inside, the Gladiator has received tech upgrades like a 12.3-inch Uconnect 5 touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, offering seamless connectivity. Higher trims, such as the Mojave X and Rubicon X, come with luxury off-road amenities including power-adjustable seats and integrated front off-road cameras to assist in challenging terrains.

With the introduction of the 2025 Jeep Gladiator, Jeep has made strides in offering more features at a lower cost. Starting at $38,990 for the base Sport model, buyers can enjoy a well-equipped off-road vehicle at a more affordable price. Higher trims like the Willys begin at $42,490, while the top-tier Mojave X and Rubicon X models—packed with advanced off-road and interior features—start at $56,230 and $58,990, respectively. These options give off-road adventurers flexibility in choosing the right balance of capability and comfort based on their budget.

With its more accessible price point, enhanced features, and best-in-class performance, the 2025 Jeep Gladiator solidifies its place as one of the most capable midsize trucks on the market, making it a top choice for off-road travelers.
