Yano: no security deposit, no finder's fee either (I jumped on it)

Y: there aren't many apartments with cheap pet fees. plus I've never seen a ghost (ok ok, I know you're hungry)

Y: hey, I'll unload my stuff; you wipe the floors

Y: oh yeah the yellow parrot (the one that fell from the 2nd floor while in her cage and managed to survive...)
T: we had her for 7 years and then she died a peaceful death (I was in my 2nd year of Junior high)
T: I buried her under the azalea in our back yard
T: and then one night in the middle of the night I woke up and found Pi-chan sitting there on top of my blanket
T: I was just staring at her in shock and then she said, "thank you"
Y: .....................oh........................that's a nice dream...
T: it wasn't a dream! (it's true!! aw shit, this is the first time I've ever told anybody too)
Y: I bet the place my mom and I used to live in is known as a haunted place too

I'm guessing the cryptic message Takeuchi was sending Yano to clean his room is so that he will find the cell phone strap?

I looked at the japanese summary for chapter 59, but it's a little confusing cause a lot of it is thoughts and not dialogue and it's not the easiest to differentiate the two...has anybody seen Japanese raws for this chapter yet?

holy crap. so this is the long awaited kiss that EVERYBODY's been waiting for~~~~~
I think the Chizu/Ryuu interaction was done beautifully, with Chizu getting pissed off at that girl who had the audacity to come up to her and suggest that she put some distance between her and Ryuu. Unbelievable. I really like how all the scenes keep changing back and forth between Kazehaya/Sawako (love), Ryuu/Chizu (figuring stuff out, still awkward), and Ayane/Mogi (Ayane figuring out that she doesn't want to continue dating somebody she doesn't have feelings for).

phew, that's some major therapy going on. A very uplifting chapter - you kind of forgive Yuri for being such a horrible bitch earlier. It makes you realize that everybody is flawed, but trying their best (aka Yuri and her crazy mother) and it's true what she said about hang ups - you don't realize how ridiculous they are until you get over them. The end is soon, my friends!

I read きのう何食べた？ by よしながふみ yesterday and it was pretty good. The descriptions of cooking can get kind of long if you're looking for story, but if you like to cook Japanese food and are looking for recipes, this manga can supply just that.
The story is about Kakei Shirou, a 40+ year old, very good looking and fit lawyer. He also turns out to be gay, and is pretty out-of-the-closet about it, except at work.
At work, he is good at his job but refuses to stay late, and goes home every day at 6pm so he can cook. He cooks to relax (he is a bit high-strung) but also derives great pleasure from finding good deals at grocery stores and meticulously keeps track of his monthly grocery expenses (which he splits with his boyfriend and roommate). So the main character is this funny mixture of being handsome and manly but fussy like a housewife, stingy, self-absorbed yet considerate of his bf...
His bf is an effeminate hairdresser that isn't Kakei's usual type (he likes stoic, distinguished looking guys), being gentle, sweet, and emotional, but they get along very well and maintain a cute relationship (Kakei does all the cooking). Kakei's co-workers and his parents (who are accepting of his sexuality but a little uncomfortable and also sad that they won't have any grandkids) also come into the story. Each chapter kind of stands alone, and I think you get a good snapshot of day-to-day average Japanese life (although I'm sure the cooking is a lot better/more elaborate than average), so if you're looking for a manga that's not explosive fireworks and drama and smut, but chilled out, everyday normal life, then you can download this manga at Michex http://www.clark-web.net/michexforum/showthread.php?t=791 (I think you have to be registered).

They all get ready to take a class photo. Kazehaya taps Sawako on the shoulder and says, "over here".
Ayane and Chizu of course tease him
A: wo-w, hey, did you hear that?
C: "over here"
A: way to go
C: Kuronuma. you stand! next! to me!!
K: shut up!!
A: go on (pushes Sawako's shoulder lightly)
Sawako thinks that she's never been in a class photo like this one before...
After the class photo, Pin tells them to sight see the aquarium in their groups and meet at the bus at the designated time. He then asks the guide if she'll go look at the manatees with him. They're all having fun, Sawako's taking pictures.
K: Kuronuma!
K: There are jinbee sharks over there!
S: wow-
Kazehaya takes a picture of her
S: wah, did you just take a picture of me?
K: yup. oh, here comes a shark! smile--
Sawako gets tense, Kazehaya laughs at her. She says she's not used to being the subject of photos (there's a bunch of text but this slide is very blurry...)
Sawako thinks how she hasn't taken any photos of Kazehaya yet, because she's too nervous. She thinks to take one, and he looks right at her.
S: wah! you're looking over here!
K: yeah, of course!
S: yes, you're right..
K: yay. (peace sign)
Sawako takes a photo of K. Classmates are all having fun, Sawako thinks that she's happy to be able to create so many nice memories.There are a series of shots of her staring at Kazehaya (no text) who is looking at the fish, and she takes a photo of him. (it's quite poignant)
Later on the bus:
C: that was fun!
S: I took a lot of pictures
C: ooh, let me see, let me see! ahahaha, look at Joe's face in this one!
A: want to see ours too?
S: yes! I do, I do!
Sawako tears up seeing how she shows up in so many of Ayane's photos
C: ahaha, Sawako, your eyes are as big as saucers here. look, Yanochin is refusing to touch the sea slug!
S: ahaha, my eyes are half closed in this one.
Sawako thinks how she will remain in the memories of her friends too
Later they're all outside doing a little more sightseeing and Pin sees somebody with a sun umbrella and starts talking to her
P: what a beautiful ocean, huh
P: Wah!? you're Yano!! What are you doing with a sun umbrella! Hey!
A: shut up~ I'm fighting UV rays. Do you even have to be hitting on girls in Okinawa?
Later at the hotel:
C: today is just a day for having fun - it's great. I think I may have been looking forward to today the most! We went to the aquarium, had pineapple, and now the hotel's private beach!
A: that means it's only down hill from here
C: gasp! you're right!
C: our free time tonight is nice too. private beach~
A: that's right. Yogicchi and I have plans to meet there.
C: so raunchy~
A: what are you talking about
C: Sawa, you're hanging out with us, right
S: yup
They hear footsteps and turn around. It's Kurumi being chased by a guy.
K: gosh, just give up already! you're so annoying!
guy: your angry face is so cute too
K: don't follow me!
G: I'm heading to the private beach too! what a coincidence
K: then I'm not going!
G: oh wait up! you're so fast!
Chigusa appears with a notepad and pen and tells them that since Kurumi has been showing her true personality (cold/mean) she's picked up a new fan base. She's already been confessed to 8 times, and has been hit on 5 times
C: wah, when did you get here! and your information is quite impressive
S: I wonder if we should help her out...
A: don't worry, he doesn't look dangerous
Sawako, Chizu, and Ayane are building a sand castle and chatting
C: Kurumi is popular as ever, huh
A: confessed to 8 times...and that's just by Chigusa's count - there could be more
C: shees, there's nobody in our class that's getting confessed to, right? Oh, Andy! but nobody else, right?
A: hey, what about me?!
C: oh yeah!
Joe: what are you talking about! You're forgetting your own childhood friend!
C: huh?
J: Ryuu was confessed to yesterday!
The three girls are shocked. Ryuu bonks Joe on the head.
J: Ow!
C: what? Is it true?
J: he turned her down immediately

Sawako and Kazehaya are smiling at each other and talking about how the ocean here is different from the one back home (whiter sand, bluer water). Sitting together, Sawako's dad saying, "take care of Sawako, take care, take care (echo)" pops into Kazehaya's head
Then his own dad saying, date with moderation! As long as you're a child unable to support yourself, you ought to date as children do!
K: ~~~argh, I KNOW!
S: wah~~I'm sorry!
K: what? oh, no! forget what I just said
A: What's going on over there?
Ken: they really get along, don't they~
A: oh (she sees Mogi)
M: oh, Yano-san!
M: we're still good for tonight?
A: yeah
M: our meeting spot...
A: yeah, that's fine
M: ok. see you later
he walks away being teased by his guy friends
Later at night, they make out...
Mogi says good night and walks to his room.
She's going back up the stairs, when Pin stops her, "what are you doing?"
She turns around and sees him with his hair down (kinda good looking), he apparently just took a shower.
P: It's almost lights out time. Go back to your room
A: ...............oh it's just you - Pin.
P what do you mean, "just me". I'm our great homeroom teacher
A: hah, yeah right. you're here as our leader and you're hitting on the tour guide.
P: what's that got to do with anything?!
Ayane thinks: in the world, there are just hopeless people like this guy
Pin is guzzling a beer.
A: hey
P: huh?
A: have you ever properly loved a woman?
P: what's this about? yeah, I have.
A: .....oh (looks a little shocked).
She runs off
P: what's her deal?
some guy: oh, it's Pin! Treat us something (juice!!)
P: Yeah right! You guys probably have more money than me!
This chapter ends with some shots of Yano running towards her room....
phew~ done. I wish I could see what Chizu said in response to news of Ryuu's being confessed to. We'll see when I get the raws from Haya5h1 for our scanlation~. I personally want the focus to be on them (and of course, Kazehaya/Sawako). I'm not the biggest fan of Pin (don't kill me!)

A: Don't take pictures of me! I'm just waking up!
Sawako is brushing her teeth in her pjs and thinking, "wow! when I wake up I'm in a hotel! The first things I see upon waking are my friends' faces! and then breakfast with everybody!"
She changes into her school uniform and walks out of her room, sees Kazehaya kun.
S: oh!
K: ....morning!
S's thinking continues, "and the guy I like"
S: ...good morning...!

Joe is actually still at it, causing a ruckus with the other guy students...C&A look over at him

G: all the Okinawan bus guides, whether they're from the north region or the south region, return to their homes at the end of the day. I will not spend the night with you!

A: eww, that gives me the shivers
Kento: despite the heat, eh, HAHAHAHA
S: oh, I actually brought a fan
C: ooh, you're so prepared
some guy: hey, Joe, why don't you do something

Tomo: the day to hear her story is finally here!
Kento: I didn't know Sadako-chan was the type to tell ghost stories
A: no, that's the result of countless effort!
S: ...well then, here is "Sarayashiki"
students: huh, Sarayashiki?!
Sawako bows, sitting in the rakugo style (seiza) and begins her story in the rakugo style
Kento: hahaha, Ayane-chan's face is like a Noh mask (white and expressionless)
Kazehaya looks on, his face blushing and thinking, "try your best Kuronuma"
Ryuu watches Kazehaya and thinks, "Shouta....is it love?"
They've arrived at the aquarium and people getting off the bus are discussing how good Sawako's rakugo was and how, if you just listened, it was as if many different people were acting it out (she did many different voices), and she was funny...etc
She had intended for it to be a scary ghost story, but somehow it ended up being a rakugo show...
Kento: man, Sadako-chan, that was a good rakugo parody~

Haya5h1 and I are collaborating to produce scanlations of recent kiminitodoke chapters. We are aware that other groups are already working on this project, but due to frustrations that these projects sometimes are not translated completely accurately (because of the Japanese -> Chinese - > English process, some nuances get lost in the translation process), we've decided to take a shot at it.
Our scanlations won't be ready for a month later than the release date in Japan, since haya5h1 gets betsuma from kinokuniya and it takes a while for kinokuniya to get it from Japan. but we'll do our best to get them out quickly.

My favorite manga~
I read the raws for the most recent chapter on Billwang today. I thought I'd put up a translation and see if I get any kind of response - are people interested in reading chapter summaries for this manga?
The previous chapter ended with Ootomo saying to Natsume that maybe they should separate for a while...
Natsume is stunned and asks why.
N: w- what, why, so suddenly, why???
O: well, we have jyuken (high school entrance exams)
N: you're lying. you're worried about entrance exams now?!
She takes a step toward him and he shouts "don't come near me!"
Natsume:: shocked
O: I mean....arg~~~let's hold off going home together and stuff until you're done shooting your tv show
Ootomo gets on his bike to ride off
Natsume grabs his bike
N: ...my tv show? ... not exams?
N: Doi-san said something to you, didn't he! (Doi = her manager)
Ootomo is clearly caught and can't hide his reaction.
N: I knew it!! So breaking up is about what he said, isn't it!
O: uh...i mean...
N: Didn't I say yesterday that I can only do all this because of you. If I can't be with you, then I'd gladly quit acting...!!
Ootomo gives her a look
O: It's not that it doesn't make me happy to hear you say these things...but if I'm just going to hold you back, I'd rather...
Natsume thinks: rather, rather what? break up?!?!
N: what the hell, that's totally idiotic! so you're just doing what Doi-san tells you to do? just turn him down! if...
Natsume thinks: if you love me... (but she's too shy/embarrassed to say that)
Natsume bikes off.
O: hey wait. the headphones! (these are the headphones she gave Ootomo for his birthday, but he's trying to return them to her now that he wants to break up/found out they were ridiculously expensive)
N: I don't want them! If you don't want them either, then just leave them there!
Natsume is super bummed out and is reflecting on his this is similar to what happened with Kou. Doi-san shows up and he tells her to cheer up. She tells him it's all his fault.
D: check these out! I bought them up before they got published (pictures of Ootomo and Natsume kissing)
N: wh-what are these! jeez, I'm like a celebrity or something! give me a break!
D: you and Ootomo-kun are both being very naively unaware. This kind of attention would be particularly devastating now. I called Ootomo-kun and asked him to tone it down, at least until we're finished shooting the show. but then he...
::flashback::
O: no way. you're just going to try to break us up next.
D: let's all think about the future of your two's relationship
O: with you? why?
D (kinda peeved): you know...to be honest, Natsume-chan's popularity and the fact that she's even been able to make somewhat of a comeback is nothing short of a miracle. do you understand? if she falls again, there won't be a second miracle. I guarentee it. If you really like her, think about what's best for her.
::back in the present::
N: y- you're a horrible grown up!
D: I've only said the truth. you definitely can't be having any boy scandal right now. especially pictures like these - way too sexual for a middle schooler. People are bound to think, "oh, there were rumors of an incident, but she must've been a loose girl to start with"
N: If I have to break up with him, then I'd rather give up acting...
D: many people are working to support you. is that the extent of your resolve? Also, I'm not just doing this for your sake. I think breaking up would be better for Ootomo-kun as well...
N: what...?
model girl shows up.
Model: Natsume--? Long time no see! I haven't seen you since Plum (the magazine) days
N: wow, hey!!! How is everyone at Plum? Do you have a photoshoot today?
M: ahaha, most of the models have been replaced! haven't you kept up with Plum at all? I bet you didn't even see my graduation project!
D: Aya-chan, I heard you got a part in the Monday night show?
M: ehehe
Natsume narrating: Even when Plum was sent to me, I rarely looked through it. I couldn't bare to see everybody's shining faces. I have no light anymore. I'm able to be here in this environment now only due to the afterglow from my earlier days, pretending I still have the light. I'm able to keep a hold of myself this way. although my thin pride is only based on the fact that I dabble in the entertainment industry...
some dude: Natsume-chan! Doi-san! We just got news that we're going to make "Natsume part II". And there's some talk of a movie being in the works!
Model: wow!!!!
N: I'm so happy...!
"If she falls again, there won't be a second miracle"
in class, Natsume and Ootomo are texting each other.
N: I'm sorry about the other day. I know you were only thinking of what's best for me. But I still don't want to stop seeing each other
O: but you never know who's taking pictures. I think it'd be best to lay off seeing each other until the show's finished. We can talk on the phone and text each other. Just a little more than a month left.
N: They've decided to make a part II of the show. It might even turn into a movie. You don't know how long it'll be before we can see each other.
O: wow!!! congrats!!!
N: you are so understanding.
Natsume thinking to herself: oh, he's not text back? Did I anger him? Even if I understand mentally, my emotions can't keep up. Ootomo's emotions are always in line with his head. oh well, that is part of the reason I like him so much anyhow, hehehehe. It seems like a dream or a fantasy that we were talking about sex just the other day.
Natsume is now at home just getting out of her shower. She gets a text from Doi-san
D: Natsume-chan, this is reality LINK.
She clicks on the link and is directed to some kind of forum where there's a picture of her and Ootomo in a group shot (from the class trip), with Ootomo circled. Natsume is completely shocked and wonders if it was put up by someone in her class or...?
N: Ootomo is not the kind of person to be hated or resented. He should never, NEVER be somebody to have things like this said about him or written about him.
Just then she gets a call from Ootomo, but she doesn't answer...
The next day on the way to school..
N (thinking to herself): I wonder if it was one of these people, just messing around. oh, good morning boyfriend (she sees Ootomo).
"I just want you to smile" (Ootomo)
N: that's how I feel too. I just want Ootomo to be laughing and smiling under the sun.
A student runs by and takes a picture of Ootomo, runs off.
O: huh?
Kid with Ootomo: did he just take a picture of us?
Natsume hits the student with her bag and grabs his cell phone.
O: Mochizuki! What are you doing? Did that guy do something to you?!
the student: what the hell! It's not like I took a picture of you! Gimme back my cell phone.Hey, what do you think you're doing!! (Natsume deletes the photo of Ootomo and gives the cell phone back to the student)
N: Lame. This is all so stupid! I'm sick of it! I'm so sick of this already! I'm gonna quit acting!
O: hey, calm down.
N: Don't touch me!
So many things going through her head: the stuff online, what Ootomo said about holding her back...
N: Fine!
N: I'll break up with you - that's what you all want right?!
She runs off crying, leaving Ootomo aghast at this extremely public break up scene.
Later, on the roof (she's skipping class), she texts Ootomo
N: that was all a lie earlier. I'm sorry. Natsume.
O: you all right? Where are you right now? Would it be better to talk face to face? Ootomo.
N: thanks, but I'll do as you said and lay off trying to see you for a while. Maybe we should just let everybody think we're broken up.
O: ok. Ootomo.
...even if we met up, or texted, or talked on the phone, I might just make things worse. I don't want to be the reason Ootomo looks upset. He needs to always be smiling. Maybe Ootomo would actually smile more if we just never see each other.
...I can't sleep. and the entrance exams are tomorrow. ..I wonder if Ootomo's ok. I bet he hasn't even been studying and just playing guitar all the time.
She is walking into the forest to the small shrine
...I'll at least try praying to the gods. I bet God is even fed up with me. I am always powerless when it comes to the important things
now she's at Kou's little hut
...oh yeah, somebody's living here...wait, in this cold?! The person who lives here, i wonder if he's....
She walks in and sees Kou bundled up in a sleeping bag and looking really messed up.
Kou: why...are you here
N: K..ou...chan
Kou walks out of the hut, but he crumples to the ground. She feels his face and can tell that he has a fever. She takes out her phone but he grabs her arm.
K: who are you trying to call?!
N: an ambulance
K: go home! listen to me, if you tell anybody that you saw me here, I'll never forgive you.
N: but...you can't even stand! If I just leave you here...
N: ok, fine...just rest in the hut. I'll bring you some medicine and stuff, and don't worry, I'll make sure nobody sees me.
N: so..just wait for me
fever reducing pills, bandages, a towel, something to cool him, warm him, something to drink...
she thinks about calling Ootomo but then remembers how adamant Kou was about keeping it secret

Why am I running in the opposite direction? I should at least call Ootomo and let him know I'm not betraying him.What am I doing? What am I doing?!
Why do I still feel like if there's something I can do for Kou-chan, that I have to do it?

phew~ Asakura makes it so so hard for me to pick between Kou and Ootomo. But it sucks for Ootomo that he feels like he's holding Natsume back. that's gotta suck. and now Kou and Natsume have a connection again. Excited for the next chapter!!!

on the plane heading to Okinawa,
Chizu holds out a piece of beef jerky. She tells Sawako to open up, and feeds her. Andy and Yui-chan are sitting near them and look very happy. Chizu looks a little envious and says, "Yui-chan wasn't able to confess at the festival, so I think she really had her heart set on this trip. I bet there were a lot of people who confessed or were confessed to during this trip."
Kazehaya calls out, "Kuronuma!" and holds out a pocky. Sawako, going with the earlier flow, eats it out of this hand, but then realizes he probably didn't intend for that and panics, "whoops? were you not...? oh no!" Kazehaya looks down with embarrassment and blushes: "uh, no problem..."
Chizu and Ayane head to the bathroom and on the way see the guy who confessed to Ayane (his name is either Mogi or Moteki). They talk about how they're looking forward to the trip and Chizu tactfully excuses herself, "I- I'm going ahead". Chizu runs into Kento who says, "aww they look happy. I thought ultimately Ayane-chan would end up with me." C: "when things go your way, does it usually happen all at once?" K: "yeah~ well, I guess it differs from person to person!"
the scene changes to the end of the last chapter...
the kid that confessed to Ayane: Please go out with me! I'm Motoki (or Mogi) from B class. I don't think you know who I am, but I'd like for you to get to know me little by little
Ayane immediately answers, "ok, let's go out!" Everybody else is very surprised!!
Sawako and Kazehaya kun are sitting across the aisle from each other and talking.
S: Kazehaya-kun, do you know Motoki-kun?
K: actually, not really. In junior high we were in different classes, so I don't really know what he's like...
Sawako thinks back...
at the shoes boxes on the way home, Chizu asks, "you're really going to date him?"
Ayane laughingly replies, "he seems interesting. In the past I've only dated older, really casual guys. He's pretty cute, and it might make the Okinawa trip more fun"
Sawako remembers Ayane's smile and thinks, it'll be fun! it'll be fun!!
She looks at everybody's excited faces, then turns to Kazehaya-kun and they smile at each other.
They arrive safely in Okinawa and it's hot! Everybody gets on the bus and heads to the hotel, but the bus guide that Pin introduces is very voluptuous and curvy and Pin looks a little nervous!
Sawako, Ayane, and Chizu are in the girls room. Sawako is putting away her luggage and Ayane says to her, "did you bring the underwear you bought the other day?!"
S: yup, I brought it. it's not too showy is it? It's my first underwear that's not cotton...
C: yeah, it's shiny and smooth! so cute!
Ayane and Chizu head to the gift shop and find Kazehaya kun there too.
Ayane whispers to Kazehaya, "we went shopping the other day with Sawako and bought new underwear for the trip"
Kazehaya is aghast: "that's nice..." (why are you telling me this!!!!)
Chizu whispers: Sawako bought a string bikini
Kazehaya is blushing furiously and says, "again, why are you telling me this!"
Sawako has finished changing and arrives, "Sorry to keep you waiting~"
Kazehaya is blushing even harder and threatens C&A: "you better not say anything to anybody else!"
Sawako is wearing a hoodie and pants
K: I've never seen you not wearing a skirt before!
S: I wanted to be able to move around easily. is it weird?
K (still blushing): no, it's not weird!
people around them are murmuring "Sawako is wearing clothing with prints on them. Is it because she has a boyfriend now?
S: is this too flashy?
classmates: no, not at all
She appears to be very at home amongst her classmates.
Ayane and Chizu look on, grinning.
Kazehaya watches Sawako fretting over her appearance and thinks to himself, "idiot! why do you have feel so aware** of her!"
Ryuu to K: you feeling aware of her?
K: no!
Kazehaya is blushing hard again.
**ishiki suru means to be very aware of the opposite sex. In this case Kazehaya can't help himself thinking about Sawako as a girl. It's slightly less sexual than being turned on. quite awkward.
The three girls are chatting in the bath together
A: you know, cute underwear isn't just for yourself
C: yeah it is, you wear it to pump yourself up
A: you say that now because you don't have any other reason
S: wow, grown up talk...!!
A: I have plans to meet up with Motoki-kun tomorrow night, and we're going to spend the free time together. Sawako, you should too with Kazehaya.
C: w- what about me--?!!
A: Chizu......you have Ryuu
C: aw, is this how it's gonna be?! oh well~~!
S: this is girl talk time right? There's actually something I've been wanting to ask you, Ayane-chan...when did you start to like Motoki-kun?!

Ayane looks uncomfortable

They head to the vending machines for a drink and run into Ryuu and Kazehaya kun. Ryuu hands Chizu a coke, but she refuses saying, "I'll choose for myself!" She thinks for a minute then takes Ryuu's coke anyway.
R: you can buy me ice cream tomorrow!
C: hey! that's more expensive!
Sawako sees Kazehaya's damp hair and is dokidoki, happy to see this everyday side of him.
K: what about you, Kuronuma?
S: sanbincha. oh, here's 150yen
K laughs: this happened before too
S: what...? oh, the canned coffee!!
K: here you go, on me! (hands her the tea)
S: thanks!
Kazehaya blushes, Ayane looks on.
In the guys room, Kazehaya, Jo-, and Ryuu are talking
J: so how far have you gone with Sadako? Have you kissed her yet? you've held her hand right
K: hey, shut up!!
J: Andy has a girlfriend now too. and I haven't even kissed anybody yet. I thought maybe I'd kiss Yano at some point. oh, why'd she get a boyfriend anyway?!
K: what? you were serious about Yano?
J: well, no, not exactly...
K: Jo- you're horrible
J: Ryuu, Ryuu, you're with me right. But seriously, what kind of things do you do with Sadako?
K: Leave me alone!!!
They hear a knock on the door.
"Ryuu~ it's the girls from class C!!!"
Kazehaya looks very surprised! (remember, Sawako, Chizu, Ayane are in class D)

the start of the second semester. Looking forward to the class trip to Okinawa!!
Sawako, Chizu, and Ayane are talking excitedly about their trip. Apparently Sawako wants a "sheesa-" (sorry, I have no idea what this, I'll find out when I see raws).
Sawako says to her friends, let's take a lot of pictures! and her mind is full of everybody together, learning, eating, sleeping, taking pictures...
S: all of us are together the who-le time! 4 nights, 5 days!
C&A: Kazehaya too! (teasing)
They enter the classroom and Kazehaya says they're picking groups now! Sawako happy again.
Chizu and Ayane watch them and discuss how they're still the same, Kazehaya could at least call her by her name, let's try to get the two of them alone during the trip, maybe there will be some progress (scheming).
Kento interrupts Sawako and Kazehaya - "hey, when the two of you are alone, do you call each other by your names?"
K: what's it to you, jeez!
Kento: I heard through the grapevine that you've both already met each other's parents
K: how the heck do you know?!
K: puh-lease, my gossip network is as good as any girl's.
Now the whole class knows that Sawako and Kazehaya have met each other's parents.
Kazehaya, Sawako, Ayane, Chizu, Ryuu, Joe, and Andy have decided to be group 2 together.
Chizu and Ryuu greet each other like normal, but Chizu thinks to herself that things have been a little awkward between them since the hand-holding-at-the-beach incident.
Sawako thinks (as usual) that she better volunteer to be group leader (so that nobody else needs to feel obligated to take on this responsibility) but Kazehaya taps her on the shoulder and says that he'll be group leader. Sawako is happy that Kazehaya was able to read her thoughts and asks him if it's ok that she wait for him while he has his group leader meeting. K: sure! Kento and Ayane look on and happily agree that they seem like a real boyfriend-girlfriend couple.
While Sawako is waiting for Kazehaya, Ayane and Chizu invite her to look at an Okinawa guide book with them, and the three girls start to walk down the stairs. They see Andy and Yuu-chan on the landing though, and (to give them privacy/space) they swiftly turn around. They wonder whether that was a confession or not...but on the way back to the classroom, notice that there are couples everywhere in the hallway.
Ayane and Chizu discuss how on trips, you always want to sightsee as a couple, it's natural. Then they turn to Sawako and call her Sawako-senpai! (cause she has a boyfriend). S: no~~~ stop~!
A: Chizu, you're not going to sightsee with Ryuu, are you? If everybody pairs off Andy and Yuu-chan, Kazehaya and Sawako, Chizu and Ryuu, then I'll end up with Joe! (teary) Chizu, you don't have plans to start going out with Ryuu, do you?
C: of course not!
Sawako is a little bummed to hear this...
A: anything new with you, Chizu?
C: lately? new...
Chizu recalls the incident at the beach with Ryuu and becomes silent.
A: did something happen?
C: No!!
A: Chizu, do you like anybody?
C: nah, I've only ever liked Tooru. but even though I liked him for so long, I feel fine about it now. When I see him, I can laugh and talk normally, and I'm glad I was able to tell him how I feel. If I hadn't told him, I might still be dragging my feelings along
A: how'd you confess to him?
C: oh you know, that I like him
A: and you, Sawako?
S: uh, that I like him...
Sawako and Chizu blush a little
C: Yanochin, when you like somebody, how do you confess?
A: oh, I don't confess
C: you stink
S: this is like Gout Temps Nouveau (a Japanese talk show)
Kento interrupts again: Ayane-chan, wanna go out with me? I'm free right now
A: no thanks
K: aww~ so quick to reject. so you don't want a boyfriend?
A: yeah, I would, but I haven't met anybody~
K: I'm glad for you, Sadako-chan! you seem so happy!!
S: Shisho! (master/mentor)
Kazehaya approaches.
Kento: Kazehaya, you're the jealous type aren't you! You're not at all sawayaka (wholesome, happy) towards me! (laughs)
K: leave me alone!
the five of them walk towards the doors together but there's a guy hiding in the shadows. He comes out and calls, "Yano-san". Everybody turns around and he says, "do you have a minute". He's a cute nice looking boy.
A: uh, yes?
guy: ok, fine, here then
S&C: here?! no way?!??!
the guy busts out with a confession ("please go out with me") right there in front of everybody.

I read the raws for the newest chapter on Billwang today. Something's finally happening in this manga, so here's a summary:
Yano runs into the last train of the night with a coworker and the two exchange some small talk about the cherry blossoms. All of a sudden Yano feels a spell coming on (for his illness, I can't remember what it is) and jumps off the train (at a stop).
He goes to Takeuchi's apartment because it's closer than his own and spends the night there. Takeuchi asks if he met up with Takahashi and Yano says, of course not, why would I?
Sengenji spots Nanami staring at a package of taiyaki (snack) on her desk and jokes, start your diet tomorrow, let's eat those right now! But apparently Nanami, who's been trying to think of an excuse to see Yano, had bought the taiyaki (after waiting in line for an hour) thinking that she could surprise Yano at his workplace. Sengenki tells her that's stupid - how would Nanami feel if Takeuchi arrived at her workplace one day with taiyaki? Nanami replies she would be happy, but of course that's kinda weird. Nanami offers, what about I go in your place? Sengenji tells her to do her own job and stop being dumb.
On the train Sengenji wonders what is Takeuchi's reason for nudging Nanami towards Yano. But she knows that he's not somebody who does things thoughtlessly, so he must have a concrete reason, something to give him conviction of purpose. But Sengenji doesn't know what's going on and she doesn't want to encourage Nanami to pursue Yano.
At Yano's workplace, Sengenji is doing business as usual and the guys there (because she's pretty) are very attentive and bring her cheesecake that is also very popular. Yano himself had been forced to go pick it up earlier and she catches him watching her. As the guys are discussing who to send to the exhibition in Oosaka the following week, Sengenji finds out that Yano has to attend a funeral for a relative or something. She catches up with Yano and does some small talk with him (asking how he is, how is his dog?) and finally asks how is Yamamoto-san? He chuckles, you don't care anyway. Sengenji asks him to let her know when they decide on a date for Yamamoto-san's mother's funeral. He tells her it'll probably be a very private affair.
At the train station Sengenji asks Yano why he's going on the local train when the express train's right there. He tells her his symptoms have been popping up again so he needs to take the local trains so he can get off if necessary. Sengenji is worried so Yano finds her waiting for him when he finally gets off the local train.
S: You're not fine at all. This isn't like you
S: and what makes you think Yamamoto-san can save you?
Y: hahahaha. Yamamoto save me?! haha. Yamamoto has nothing to do with it. You don't get it do you. This is what you guys keep saying right?
Y: "Stop blaming yourself" "How far are you going to go to carry other people's lives" "Don't have pity for weak people" "Live how you want to live" "You ought to throw out heavy things"
Y: But you have it all wrong
Y: A long time ago you said to me that other people have a chance to worm in, didn't you?
Y: that was really sharp of you...the old Sen-chan was really like that!
Y: ...I can't live without somebody being dependent on me. I'm a loser that can only feel fulfillment by being depended on. I wonder why
Y: If it's because I've been raised that way, or if it's just my inherent nature.
Y: ...so you see, I'm not as selfless and admirable as you guys think. Behind all my pretty excuses, I'm just a selfish guy. It could've been anybody - it didn't have to be Yamamoto
S: ...well in that case, it could've been Nanami
Y: Don't be stupid. Takahashi isn't the dependent-type, is she?
S: ...ha..haha...I see. That's a good excuse you've found. You're just running away. You're just scared of Nanami.
S: I know...you're scared of repeating the past right? She reminds you, right? and you don't want to be abandoned again
Y: ...abandoned? Who?
S: You. by your mother, Nana-san
Y: You're saying I was abandoned?
S: You think that you were "betrayed". That they "betrayed" you and then "left you behind". Even though you were "good to them" and "always faithful and loyal" and you were "dedicated", "they broke their promises"
S: You say that you like being depended on. But that's because you like to offer all of youself too, right? You like to be carried by another. But right now you're not entrusting yourself to anybody, because you if you do, you'll only be betrayed.
S: but you feel betrayed because you have expectations, right? But it's odd, because more than anything, you wanted to meet Nanami's expectations.
but you were scared, so you ran. You understand yourself well - your desire to be loved is stronger than anybody's, and who will you bind next? If you love too strongly it never turns out well, you know this well enough. That's why you distanced yourself, finding any excuse you could, and that's how you protected...yourself? no, your sacred ground
Y: ...is that all you wanted to say?
Y: never show your face to me again
Later at a bar:
Takeuchi: although physically harming another person is illegal, I wonder why there aren't any laws against harming another person's heart
Sengenji: of course - where would the heart be without the body! (hits the table)
S: but as long as you're alive, you still have opportunities. The heart is only at the mercy of the person's will.
T: but for example, if you were hurt and became blind, you wouldn't realize it if something were there. Could you sense the scent of a flower if you were hurt and lost your sense of smell? If you were hurt and lost your sense of touch,would you even recognize something when you touched it? if you were hurt and you lost most of your senses..
S: ...so then, is it luck...?
T: luck huh~ that's kinda sad
Yano is walking and he's thinking about what Sengenji said ("You wanted more than anything to meet Nanami's expectations, right?" "But you were scared so you ran")
"You ran"
"You ran"
these words are running through his head, and (I suppose the stress induced an attack) he has to jump off the train. He texts his workplace that "it's going to happen soon, so I will be spending the night in the hospital starting tonight. I don't know if it'll take a day, 3 days, or a week...but I'll let you know if anything changes"
Yano tears up.
Nanami is at her apartment eating taiyaki, thinking that she's really sick of them. She decides to freeze them, calls herself a coward (for not going to see Yano), looks out the window to see that it's snowing outside, when the doorbell rings.
flashes to Yamamoto sitting next to her mother's hospital bed. She thinks of her friend who tells her that people can hear you even if they're not conscious.
Nanami answers the door and sees Yano standing there.
"the truth is, you want to love"
"because your desire to love is stronger than anybody's"

I liked this chapter. Yano's co-dependency is a fairly common problem and it's really hard to be happy with issues like that. I can understand him being scared and running from Takahashi, and also feeling like he wouldn't want to involve her in his crap. Honestly, I wouldn't touch Yano with a ten-foot pole: he's a nightmare of a partner and a disaster waiting to happen.
I did like the whole exchange between Yano and Sengenji - he needed somebody to whip him a little, and Sengenji is direct enough to not sugar coat it.
Hopefully the series will keep PROGRESSING and end soon.

Sawako thinks to herself, "I've wanted to become a person that fits "Sawako" more than "Kuronuma", more than "Sadako"...but I think it's enough. It's enough to hear these words that are like a treasure. We're not looking at each others backs, or our profiles, but face to face...and our feelings are reciprocated"
K: ...I'm so embarrassed...I had no idea you knew...
S: ...what?
K: about the time I said you name, at the afterparty after the athletic day
S: ...what?
K: --wait? what?!...what are you talking about?
S: um, that day by the flower beds...the first time we properly spoke to each other...you said, "you're Kuronuma Sawako, right?"...
K: whaat?! I mean, yeah, I remember that, but

Sawako and Kazehaya are walking together; Kazehaya carries a grocery bag containing ice cream. His mother had asked him to bring some refreshments to the little league practice his dad and younger brother are both at.
K: sorry, Kuronuma.
S: oh, no, no problem
K: I know we were supposed to study....
S: well, we weren't going to get much studying done anyway...
K: hahahaha yeah you're right! I think the outdoor air is doing us good
S wonders what Kazehaya-kun's dad and brother are going to be like...
S: what's your brother's name?
K: Touta! I call him Tota!
S: Tota!...does he look like you?

S thinks, "his woman!"
Kazehaya scolds him and bonks him on the head, but Touta is unphased.
T: what, she's not?
K: well, yeah, she is, but don't say it like that
S: I'm Kuronuma Sawako...nice to meet you
Touta stares at Sawako and says, "Sawako"
Kazehaya is shocked/bummed at how easily Touta reached the place that he finally just got to (calling her by her name)
T: she's like a ghost
K: HEY! Tota!
Touta runs off.
K: oh...Kuronuma, that's my dad
S thinks, "Kazehaya-kun in the future!!"
There's a guy walking toward them, very strongly built, wearing square glasses, eating ice cream
Dad: ...who are you
K: this is Kuronuma Sawako-kun, we're in the same class at school...and we're going out!!
D: ...going out?! I asked her anyway, why are you butting in
K: why'd you have to say it like that!
S: ...uh, ummm, pardon the delay but can I introduce myself~~?
D: ...go ahead!
apparently she goes on some long monologue here, that the blogger left out
D: that's enough
Kazehaya dad holds out the bag containing the ice cream
D: Sawako, what do you want to eat
S: oh, well then, the soda flavored...
D: what are you saying, eat the manjuu ice cream, it's good!!
Kazehaya and Sawako stand outside the field and watch the practice.
S: your dad is very much a "dad"....but different from my dad...he's very serious
K: serious?! yeah...I guess you could say that...I just think he's a old fart
D: who you calling an old fart?! What are you two talking about!
S: wah--
D: bring up those knees!
S looks and finds that he's yelling at some of the kids
S: oh...he's just shouting at the kids...
K: I bet he shouted that on purpose
K stares at the pavement and says, "I think they liked you, Kuronuma...Sawako"
Sawako looks at him in surprise at hearing him say her name
K: my mom, Tota, my dad, Maru, my whole family
S: wahhh!!! (feeling overwhelmed)
this chapter seemed kind of short. maybe this blogger is a little less descriptive that the other blog I usually translate, but it gets the idea across. Kazehaya's going to start calling her "Sawako"!!! so cute so cute. leave a comment and let me know what you guys think of this chapter!

It's August, summer classes are over, it's almost obon season, and there's not much of summer left.
Sawako is going to Kazehaya's house today.
He arrives with Maru (the dog) to pick her up and Maru jumps on her, causing Sawako to fall over. But she's happy and says, "Long time no see~~gotten so big...you remember me?!" Kazehaya laughs and apologizes.
Kazehaya had invited her over on the pretense of working on their summer homework together but asks, "come to think of it, Kuronuma, you've probably already finished the homework, haven't you?" Sawako has indeed finished the hw, but tells Kazehaya that she has other things she can study. "Plus....I kind of just wanted to see Kazehaya kun's house!" Kazehaya blushes, smiles, and responds, "I'll do all the work myself, but maybe I'll ask you some questions when I get stuck. " S: "if I can be of help!"
Sawako wonders to herself how Kazehaya's house will be and whether his family members will be present since it is the weekend, but she's too nervous to ask Kazehaya. But she finally asks, "um...how do I look today?" Kazehaya is taken by surprise, but answers with gusto, "what!! You look really cute!" (bright red). "I mean!! uhhh....!!!" Sawako blushes too, but clarifies, "I mean...do I look proper, is what I'm wearing ok?" K: "ohhh that's what you mean?" Kazehaya realizing what Sawako meant crouches down with embarrassment.
K: K-Kuronuma, you always look fine...
S: oh, unexpected compliments...thank you
K: I'm just being honest...
today Sawako is wearing a white dress and carrying a canvas tote bag.
They keep walking and Sawako wonders if there's a chance nobody will be home and it'll just be the two of them. That would be another nerve-racking scenario!
She thinks, "I wonder what Kazehaya-kun's family is like. I hope I look ok...and will I be able to greet them properly? I hope I smile and give off a good, cheerful impression...oh my, not only am I setting my sights on a very tall mountain (meaning she has high hopes), I seem to be attempting to climb a completely different mountain"
She looks far into the distance at the Chizuru mountain. (this means she feels like she's trying to be like Chizuru - cheerful, happy, smiling a lot)
S: I just hope I don't cause them any discomfort.
Kazehaya leads Sawako into the Window Sports shop.
K: I'm home--!
S: Kazehaya-kun, your family runs a store?! I had no idea!!
K: oh, seriously? I didn't tell you that?!
S: wow--there's still so much I don't know!!
Kazehaya's mom: onii-chan!! (big brother) The glass is a little dirty right there, can you wipe it!
Kazehaya wipes the glass.
K: oh, sorry Kuronuma! my mom is so rough
M: who you calling rought!
but she finally realizes who is there.
M: oh!! are you Sawako-chan?! You must be Kuronuma Sawako chan!! Good for you to come! I've heard a lot about you! I am Shouta's mom
His mom is plump and seems very nice. She smiles at Sawako and Sawako thinks to herself how similar Kazehaya is to his mother. Sawako thinks, "she has the same aura/air about her as Kazehaya-kun. So this person is his mother"
Sawako is lost in her thoughts, and realizes she hasn't properly greeted the mother. She anxiously bows deeply and says, "I am Kuronuma. Pleased to meet you!!" and then realizes midbow that she forgot to smile, and freezes in the position. Kazehaya's mom laughs and pats her on the shoulder, telling her why so formal?
M: Sawako-chan, your hair!
Sawako thinks, oh I should've tied it back!
M: your hair is so beautiful. So shiny and black! How nice it is to have long hair! Girls are so fun, I really wish I had a daughter!
K: sorry
Her easy smile and kind words really reinforce for Sawako that this woman is Kazehaya's mother.
S: um, these are youkans (a traditional sweet snack) that I often eat with my family
M: oh, youkan!! wow thank you! You really didn't have to- you could've come empty handed!!
K: she's putting on airs right now, but she's actually really giddy with excitement because she loves youkan
M: oh hey!! why are you giving me away!
M: I'm sorry about my son K: I'm sorry about my mother!
They both say and Sawako breaks out into a big smile
Kazehaya's mom urges them to go on up and not dawdle in such a place (the store). Kazehaya takes the boxes his mother is carrying and moves them for her (what a sweet son). Sawako seeing this thinks, "so this is how Kazehaya-kun was raised, and has shaped him into the person he is now"
K: sorry about that
S: what, oh no no, not at all, I'm happy to be introduced to your mom!
K: good~!! that's a relief.
S: were you nervous?
K: yeah of course I was! I don't want you to think badly of me!
S: come to think of it, you've been apologizing a lot today...
K: wow, you're right. my nervousness must be creeping out!
S: I think when you were at my house I was apologizing a lot too!
K: yeah, you're right!
Before entering the house, Sawako greets Maru-chan (the dog). And Maru-chan begrudgingly thinks to himself, "I remember you, you must be you know, Shouta's you know...oh well" and doesn't growl at Sawako anymore when she pets him. They walk into the house.
S: where are your father and brother today?
K: they're at baseball
S: i see. He's in little league right!...your mother is very energetic! I bet if she were our age and she were in our class, I'd want to be friends with her.
K: that's a killer compliment
S: what!
K: come on in! (he leads her to his room)
The room looks neat, but Kazehaya's mom had let slip that it's often much messier.
Kazehaya tells Sawako to look around at whatever she wants and leaves her to go get some refreshments.
S thinks, "wow so this is Kazehaya kun's room--and this where he spends his time..."
She wants to look at his things, but holds back thinking she should look without permission (even though he just gave it to her).
Kazehaya returns and is surprised to see Sawako still standing.
S: um...I looked a little..at your books and your cds...
K: if i didn't want you to see, I wouldn't have invited you. Is there something in particular you want to see?
he brings out a box of photos
K: i haven't sorted these at all
S: no, no, it's, it's ok. I mean, is it ok?! (for me to look)
K: well, I'm a little embarrassed
S: ok, then just a little!
They come across a photo from the cemetary/shrine kimodameshi (testing one's courage) they did their first year summer.
S: Is this from the kimodameshi?!
K: oh yeah, you're right! wow, it's been so long--
S: so this what the underworld was like! that was fun! I'd never felt so fulfilled before...!!

Sawako tears up a little.

Kazehaya gazes at her profile and softly says, "....I'd already fallen for you by then"
Sawako looks at Kazehaya, who's looking down now and says, "...what---why, what....you didn't seem that way at all...I mean even now...oh!! i mean, nothing, nevermind, you don't have to tell me why"
Kazehaya smiles and responds, "I like a girl who looks like she's enjoying herself."
S: I--I look like I'm enjoying myself?
K: yeah, you always look like you're having fun
They stare into each other's eyes silently, their faces pretty close (about 30cm apart)
Kazehaya abruptly gets up, his face bright red. "This distance is trouble!...Let's study!"
They sit across the table from each other and Sawako thinks to herself that back when she first entered high school, she never would've imagined that she'd be so close to Kazehaya kun.
S: for me....when you first said my name, "Sawako" that's when I fell for you
Sawako is blushing and looking down, but slowly raises her head and locks eyes with Kazehaya...

...despite having JUST written a brief summary of Chihayafuru, I've decided to start posting detailed summaries of each volume, especially since J-Sis hasn't released a new chapter in nearly a year. I'm starting where J-Sis left off, which is v2 chapter 6.

Chapter 6
Chihaya, Arata, and Taichi are competing as a 3-man team in their town tournament for kids. Chihaya is losing, but when the Chihayafuru poem is read, all 3 of them get it. Arata is sick, but he manages to (fairly easily) win his match, but Taichi and Chihaya lose both of theirs, and their team is out. Arata is coughing a lot, but he whispers to Taichi that he wishes they could've won the trophy for Chihaya. Taichi gets on his knees (dogeza) and apologizes for losing. They both turn to Chihaya who is crying and says she wishes the three of them could've played karuta longer; they all cry together.
Graduation day rolls around. Arata goes home early to pack (his family is moving the next day) but Arata and Taichi come crashing in. Chihaya asks Arata to play a game of karuta with her and Taichi expresses his admiration/surprise that Chihaya wants to play knowing Arata is going to beat her badly. Arata quickly clears some space and says that he doesn't go easy on anybody - not even a 5 year old. Taichi reads for them, and they make fun of his monotone reading. They play and Arata totally crushes Chihaya except for the Chihayafuru card, which they get at the same time. Chihaya argues that when it's a tie, the person whose side the card is on gets it. Arata starts crying and thanks them for playing karuta with him but they'll probably never see each other again. Chihaya says no, as long as they continue playing karuta, they're bound to encounter each other.
Chapter 7
At Mizusawa High School, the male students are buzzing about the attractive freshman Chihaya, younger sister of model Ayase Chitose. Rumor is that she is very pretty, but kinda weird - a "mudabijin" (literally translated as wasted beauty) - and we see Chihaya, wearing her uniform skirt over her gym clothes, putting up posters to recruit students for a karuta club. Nobody wants to join, however, and she is bummed, sprawled out on the grass listening to a cd of waka poems. She recalls a memory of when she was in junior high listening to a karuta cd and her friend taking her headphones, expecting some band, and laughing at the idea of doing karuta. She wasn't able to make any karuta buddies in junior high, and even Hyoro, the skinny kid at the karuta clinic she attends, is busy at his own school's karuta club. Even her mother, busy supporting older sister Chitose's modeling career, shows little interest in Chihaya's karuta activities. Eventually, Chihaya joins the track team at her junior high.
As Chihaya lays on the grass, a guy approaches her and makes fun of her for laying sprawled out, saying that this is why she's called a "mudabijin". It's Taichi!! Chihaya comments on how Taichi's grown taller, and Taichi complains that the difference in their height is minimal (he's 172cm, she's 167cm), but he's still growing! She's very excited to see Taichi, and Taichi, blushing a little, says she must not be very popular with the guys (cause she's so weird). They walk to the train station together and Taichi asks if Chihaya has been in contact with Arata, and she says no, he didn't even participate in the national karuta tournament last year (neither did she, busy with track team). They're interrupted by a call to Taichi from his girlfriend and Chihaya is shocked/bummed upon hearing about the girlfriend. Taichi tells Chihaya that he's not crazy about the gf (thinking he might have a chance with Chihaya) but Chihaya is also bummed at the idea that Arata also may now have things more important to him than karuta. On the train, Taichi tells Chihaya that karuta is just a hobby for him, that he's going to join a different club in high school (he played soccer in junior high), and does Chihaya want to waste her three years flailing about in B-class (karuta players are ranked A, B, C, D class and play with other members in the same class). They run into Taichi's girlfriend, who calls him Ta-kun and Chihaya shouts that if she can upgrade to A-class in this weekend's tournament, he needs to start a karuta club with her at school. She wants to tell somebody about the "Ta-kun business" but hesitates to call Arata, wondering if she's the only one holding onto their promise to continue karuta so they can meet again.
Taichi shows up in disguise at the karuta tournament to see how Chihaya is doing. Harada-sensei of course recognizes him (as "matsuge-kun" aka "eyelash-kun") and they catch up. Taichi tells Harada that he's going to play soccer, that even if he tries his hardest, he doesn't have enough talent, and will never be as good as Arata. Harada thinks back to when Chihaya was in junior high, sad to have no karuta buddies, but saying that she thinks of track practice as training for karuta (trains her reflexes). Harada tells Taichi that he needs to first try his hardest before giving up.

This is a very very well written manga by Suetsugu Yuki, whom some may know as the author caught plagiarizing. This is her first work since the plagiarism incident, and I'm quite impressed with the story, with the characters, but most of all with the art. It won some big manga award too. Basically this story is about Chihaya, a pretty high school girl who is obsessed with the traditional Japanese card game, karuta.
Karuta is a competitive one-on-one game, in which two players race to grab the card corresponding to the waka poem being read outloud. Chihaya and her guy friend Taichi were first introduced to the world of karuta in sixth grade by their childhood friend Arata, grandson of a famous karuta player. Arata moves away but the three promise each other to continue playing karuta. Now in high school, Taichi and Chihaya attend the same high school and form a karuta club and are intent on winning the national high school karuta tournament. Along the way they reunite with Arata (who temporarily quit karuta, but is back stronger than ever!) and as of volume 10, their team has qualified for the national tournament.
OK, so what's really great about this manga, of course, is the subtle relationship between Arata, Taichi, and Chihaya. Both guys have feelings for Chihaya, who unfortunately is one of those REALLY oblivious girls - oblivious to their feelings, oblivious to her own attractiveness, basically oblivious to everything NOT pertaining to karuta. Sometimes that kind of girl can be annoying - you kinda forgive Chihaya because despite being gorgeous, guys are turned off by her weirdness and her obsession with karuta. It seems as though she has always had feelings for Arata but the author doesn't do much relationship development (my one complaint - TOO MUCH KARUTA). Arata is a very strong karuta player. Taichi is also pretty strong, but he's too smart, thinks too much during play; he's one of those hyperaware people, and is often sidetracked by how his teammates' are doing. But he's super duper adorable and considerate towards Chihaya, and I love love love him (sorry, Arata). At one point (I think in vol 9) he tells this underclassman girl that he wants to pick his own girl and work to get her (not just agree to dating some random girl fawning for him). He's perfect. READ THIS MANGA.
Another added bonus to reading this manga is that you learn a lot about the karuta tradition, which I knew very little of prior to reading. Did I mention beautiful art?
Would anybody care to read detailed summaries of each volume? It appears that J-Sis, scanlation group working on this manga, has put this project on hold...

so I originally thought about doing a translation for Chapter 61, raws of which can be found on billwang. But after reading the chapter I got so annoyed, I don't feel like translating it anymore. I can pretty much sum up the whole chapter in 3 sentences anyway...BECAUSE NOTHING HAPPENED, just like NOTHING HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR THE PAST 10 CHAPTERS.
ok here's what happened...
Takahashi went home and gets sick. When she returns to Tokyo, she goes out drinking with Sengenji and other people and she tells Sengenji that she drove by Yano's old house (back home) and nothing was the same (the plants are gone, the curtains are different) and seeing old memories changed, makes giving up (on Yano) easier. Takeuchi and Yano had been drinking together and both are quite hungover. Yano goes to the hospital to see (stupid) Yuri (I hate you Yuri) and her mom and finds Yuri angrily turning her father away. When the father tries to leave, Yano stops him saying, you're just going to leave because your daughter told you to? Yuri tells Yano to stay out of it, but Yano slaps her and says that Yuri's ego shouldn't turn her mother into the woman her father couldn't see at her deathbed. Lastly, Takeuchi visits Takahashi,and says that he doesn't want to have bad memories of their time together and that they're still friends. Also believe in Yano, and wait for him to come around, no matter how long it takes, give him the RIGHT ANSWER. to what? Takahashi asks, but it's a secret...she knows the right answer. BLAH.
There were other "deep" and "emotional" and "philosophical" moments in this chapter (AS ALWAYS, seriously Obata Yuuki, I'm getting sick of the philosophy) - Takahashi has a dream in which Yano asks her where is he supposed to come home to?
so yeah, I'm bored with Bokura ga Ita, at this point. I don't think I even care how it's going to resolve all of it's issues (I'm sure Yuri's going to "let go" of Yano, and then he's going to "come home" to Takahashi). It's really too bad, because I used to really like this manga - I felt like it was very tragic in a realistic way with also some nostalgia mixed in. But with the back and forth back and forth, with Yano, now with Takeuchi, going to give up on Yano, going to keep believing in Yano, wanting to be with Takahashi, staying with Yuri, blah blah blah I'm just annoyed now. Also I don't believe that anybody is as "good" as Takeuchi is - he's like a saint or something.

It's summer vacation, hence summer classes...
Ever since the festival, Sawako is more comfortable with her classmates and is able to smoothly greet them, which makes her very happy.
When she sees Kazehaya, they both blush and greet each other, "good morning"
He asks her if the seat beside her is open, and sits down. Girls from other classes peek into their classroom and see the two of them together and whisper, "so they really are dating". Ayane overhears them and thinks to herself, "Sawako, they think you look like boyfriend and girlfriend!"
Kazehaya is done for the day because he's not taking the Modern Civilizations class, but Ayane and Sawako are, so they have one more class to go.
Ayane: so what's up, Kazehaya? are you going home now?
K: uh....no, actually. ...UH!
but Kazehaya is interrupted by Chizu bounding into the classroom and groaning "I'm sick of all this!" with a very gloomy face. Kento cheerily says, "hey, it's Chizu! what's with the long face?" Chizu is sick of the daily summer classes and shouts, "I'm sick of it!! Let's have some fun, Yano-chin and Sawako!!"
A: jeez, what's this all about. Where's Ryuu?!
C: He's at practice! It's summer and we haven't done a single summer-ish thing!
A: yeah right. You eat Garigari kun (note: an ice cream bar) 5 times a day!! I've seen you eating to AND from school
C: big whoop, you can eat those in the winter too!
A: that's a lie! You eat meat buns everyday during the winter!!
Ayane cooly counters Chizu, while Sawako nods her support of Chizu with tears in her eyes.
Kento speaks up: how about we go to the beach?
C: the beach?!
Kento: Tsuru is working there right now
A: I'm not going to the beach. I'll get sun tan.
C: I wanna go! I'll go, I'll go!!
Kento: then do you wanna head over there today after classes are done? Chizu, you're all done for the day right?
A: huh?! I'm NOT going!! you two go!!
C: why would I go alone with Kento?! The beach is fun when you go with a lot of people!! waaah
Sawako slowly raises her hand and offers, "ummm....I...I'd like to go~..."
Kazehaya looks at Sawako's blushing face with surprise.
C: nice! yeah, let's go, the three of us!!
Kazehaya hurriedly jumps out of his seat and says, "I- I want to go too!"
C: haha, ok ok, you should've said so earlier. fine you can come too!
A: all of a sudden you're so high-and-mighty. fine~~, I'll go too if Sawako's going
on the side, Kento teases Kazehaya (whisper), "you couldn't just sit idly by if your girlfriend's going, hehe"
K: shut up! (blush)
At the beach, Chizu is the only one in a bathing suit, all set to swim. Sawako muses that she should've brought her bathing suit, to which Kento asks what kind of bathing suit? Kazehaya cuts him off.
This beach is usually quite touristy, and not a lot of locals frequent it. But apparently Chizu and Ryuu swim here every summer.
Ayane sees Sawako walking barefoot by the water and recalls the conversation with her:
C: oh, so you tried to change the way you wear your uniform!
S: yeah, but it didn't work out so well, so I stopped
A: Wait up, Sawako. You're going to be in the water right? You're going to get wet, come here!!
Ayane adjusts Sawako's uniform, tucking in her shirt, hiking up the skirt 10cm above the knee, un-fastening the top button of her shirt, and loosening her bowtie. This time, Sawako looks more natural.
A: don't worry, you look fine
Sawako, surprised, thinks "wow, the skirt is a lot shorter than I thought. Jyoshikousei (female high schools students) are amazing"
Kento: ooh--you look nice, Sadako-cha--n
Ayane says to Kazehaya, "why don't you say something"
K: ........I'm embarrassed
A: I don't care how YOU feel. Don't you have anything else to say?!
S: uh... uh...
As Kazehaya walks by Sawako, he whispers, "you look cute"
Sawako screams in her head, "wow--the magic of summer!"
Ayane and Chizu tease Kazehaya, "go find some shells and dig in the sand. go on~~~go splash in the water~~!!"
Sawako turns to them and gives them a thumbs up before running to join Kazehaya.
Ayane thinks that it had felt like a elementary student's summer, thanks to Chizu, but now it's more like the sweet summer of adolescence. Kento walks away to buy something cool to eat/drink, but then some guys approach to hit on Ayane telling her she's pretty and has a nice body. The guys say, "Let's play. We'll treat you some yakiniku!!"
C: sure
Ayane thinks, crap, she's being won over with food.
C: as long as you can beat me! (initiates arm wrestling match)
C: but if I beat you, you have to treat me some yakisoba, okk?
Ayane thinks Chizu just wants yakisoba, and that she's such an elementary schooler.
Sawako and Kazehaya are building a sand castle.
K: Kuronuma, you wanted to go to the beach?
S: no, it's just...when we came to the beach after the festival...i just thought coming here with the whole class was fun and kind of like the typical high school experience...
When Sawako came to the beach as an elementary schooler, she was like the ghost of a drowned body...
Kazehaya smiles, seeing Sawako look so happy
K: ...I was actually going to invite you over my house today but..
S: what?! oh yeah! you were in the middle of saying something...ohhhh nooo!!!
K: it's ok! I love seeing you look so happy
Sawako blushes and looks at Kazehaya, and Kazehaya realizing what he just said says, "oh no, I mean.............yeah" and nods. Sawako blushes some more and her heart is clenched.
S: how many people in your family?
K: there's me, my brother, and my mom and dad. and Maru!
S: do they like sweet things?
K: We like anything! oh but, are you thinking about when you come over? Don't worry about it, you don't have to bring anything!
S: ok
Sawako then asks Kazehaya what he talked about with her dad when he came over. Kazehaya laughs and answers, "he told me as a baby you would groan a lot. If you were unhappy about something, when you were 1 years old, you would just groan" Sawako's dad happily talked of Sawako to Kazehaya, although he left out that she would groan when she wanted him to kiss her on the cheek. Sawako's dad warned Kazehaya that although Sawako is not very forthcoming with her emotions, she groans when she's unhappy about something, so watch out!
Suddenly Sawako groans "uuuuuuuuu...." and Kazehaya is anxious. She quickly reassures him that she's just joking. Kazehaya laughs, "a joke? Kuronuma joking...?"
Then looking up at Sawako, he smiles. Sawako, blushing, stares into his eyes.
Kazehaya gets up, brushes sand off, and holds his hand out to Sawako. Sawako takes his hand and gets up too.
K: do you want to put our feet in the water?
S: ...sure
and they walk to the water holding hands.
Meanwhile Chizu is repeatedly winning arm wrestling matches, continually adding more food prizes to her growing pile. Kento laughs, "Chizu has so much energy"
A: so you're already calling her Chizu, huh
Kento: yup! Ayane <3
he has treated her a soft serve ice cream.
A: ....yeah...whatever...
K: guys out of principle need to call girls by their first names!
A: what the heck. but you still call Sawako "Sadako"...(Ayane comes to a realization...)
Kento looks into the distance with a small smile. Ayane follows his gaze and sees Kazehaya and Sawako holding hands at the end of it--
A: .....good thing they got together before you fell for her, huh
K: ...what?
A: ....is it on purpose? calling her "Sadako"
Kento halts for a second but smiles again. "haha, yeah for a lot of reasons--but don't worry, it's always with love"
A: well yeah, of course
silence.
K: don't worry, it's not like that
A: ....yeah
silence.
K: ...yeah...can you lend me a shoulder...
A: ...sure
Kento leans his head on Ayane's shoulder, and Ayane pats his head, saying "there there" and Kento laughs.
The baseball team arrives at the beach for a 20 minute break.
Ryuu overhears, "that girl is crazy!! she's already beat 10 guys. There can't be anybody left to challenge her"
Ryuu sees that it's Chizuru and asks, "...what are you doing"
C: wah! Ryuu! oh yeah, I was just trying to get some free food from these nampa (nampa = hitting on) guys but it's turned into a arm-wrestling tournament!!"
R: nampa?
C: I told them I'd hang out with them if they could beat me, but they'd have to treat me if I won!
R: hmm...
Ryuu sits across from Chizuru, holds out his hand and says, "k". Ryuu easily beat Chizu.
Ryuu says "I win" and gets up.
C: what, are you after my yakisoba?!
R: 20 minutes
Ryuu grabs her hand and looks into her eyes. "you're mine right?"
Chizu is being dragged away and says with surprise, "Ryuu?!" Everybody around them roars, "oooooooh"
C: just to let you know, I wrestled with 10 guys before you showed up. That's why I lost, you know!
R: mm
C: hey...Ryuu...RYUU
Chizu is out of breath and thinks to herself that it's been a while since she saw Ryuu
When Ryuu turns back to her, she asks, "what about practice"
R: we have a 20 minute break
C: I'm asking how it's going!
R: I'm working hart. What about you? how are summer classes?
C: my head's about to explode!
Chizuru thinks, "why are we still holding hands. weird"
R: you studied harder for the entrance exam
C: well yeah, since I really wanted to get in
R: ...even though big brother had already graduated and wasn't even there?
C: HUH?! why do you think I tested for Kitaboro?!
R: huh? cause it's big brother's alma mater, right
C: cause you're going, duh
Chizuru blushes a little, but doesn't look away
C: think about it. what if we went to different schools, and your baseball team played my school in the tournament? Am I supposed to cheer for my school? I didn't want that to happen! I always want to be rooting for you!! I want to cheer for you the most!!
R: ...Chizuru
C: what, stop looking at me! idiot! idiot! (blushing furiously)
R: ...thanks (also maybe slightly blushing?)
Ryuu turns away and starts walking, never letting Chizu's hand go
Chizuru thinks, "...what is this? he wanted to spend his 20 minute break with me? we're always hanging out. or did he just want to wrestle? ...weird"
Pin looks around, eating the soft serve and Tsuru made for him. He sees Kento leaning on Ayane's shoulder on a bench, Kazehaya and Sawako looking happy by the water, Ryuu and Chizu holding hands and walking on the beach. Pin thinks, "hah, kids...this is summer! I'll kill Ryuu if he's late, even by a second"
Tsuru warns Pin, Sensei, don't drop it--, but of course Pin does and scolds, "it's your fault for distracting me! Make me another one!!"
"...summer is slowly bringing out everybody's emotions" end.
very cute. I'm glad to see Kazehaya and Sawako becoming more comfortable with each other. I really really like Ryuu - he's so sweet to Chizu. FYI, v12 (raw) is available at Michex and it contains up to c50!

This manga is probably not so under-the-radar, and I say this because it is written by Ogawa Yayoi, the author of Kimi wa Pet (a.k.a. Tramps like us). Again, Ogawa brings us a great, well written, well drawn manga, but I can't imagine that it's very popular, since no matter where I look, raws for this manga are only available up to v3, and scanlations are available up to v2 c8. Fear not fans who have an eye for high-caliber manga - Evil Flowers is resuming scanlations from c9!
Summary
Kuroki Michiru is a beautiful, young, extremely talented figure skater who has recently made the switch from competitive single's skating to pairs ice dancing. Over the course of the first 3 volumes, the readers slowly discover that in addition to being sexually abused by her step father,
Michiru went through a traumatic experience when she was 11, when she was lead to "Club bambina" (UH, MAJORLY SKETCHY) and probably sexually molested (readers are spared any violently graphic disturbing visuals). Her skating coach rescues her and tells her to stay put in a closet and listen to his diskman, but he is killed right outside the closet. 7 years later, as is often the case with victims of sexual abuse, Michiru still suffers from extremely low self-esteem and feelings of being bad, dirty, and undeserving of happiness, frequently overworking her body during skate training and pushing away her childhood friend and boyfriend Leon because she doesn't feel she deserves him. Although her memories of the "club bambina" incident have been repressed, they are beginning to resurface when she forms an ice dancing pair with her deceased coach's younger brother, Hikaru.
Thoughts
The love triangle between Michiru, Leon, and Hikaru is quite interesting - although Leon is Michiru's true love, she feels that he glorifies her and thinks she's pure and beautiful when she (believes she) is not. This results in Michiru pushing Leon away because she doesn't want him to hate her, should he find out the truth about her past. Instead she turns to Hikaru, with whom she allows herself to feel dirty and engages in a sexual relationship. Ultimately, I believe (and hope) she will end up with Leon, who is really the nicest guy and truly wishes for Michiru's happiness, but she will need to come to terms with her past and stop blaming herself. This will naturally occur as the mysteries that shroud the "Club Bambina" incident are unveiled. I am a little worried that Leon may be too nice...but he kind of overlaps with Momo from Kimi wa Pet, so I bet, like Momo, he'll end up with her at the end!
This manga is quite dark and serious, maybe a little depressing, but it's broken up with bouts of comic relief here and there, and both the heroes are very likeable...Michiru on the other hand, I have little patience for. All in all, a very well written manga and I don't know if I can wait for some kind soul to upload v4+ raws...
A call for (superficial) scanlation reform 15 Sep 2010 10:57 AM (14 years ago)
I have absolutely no idea if this is a common sentiment at all...
But I really don't like the fonts that all scanlation groups use. I'm guessing it's a relic of old American comic book typefaces, but in my opinion, it looks goofy and unprofessional. I don't even know if they're all the same font, but they all look very similar. What's wrong with good old times new roman or even calibri? The fonts used currently make shoujo titles look silly and girly, and shounen titles look dated and ridiculous. Somehow, don't ask me how, the font seems to exaggerate the stereotypes.
Considering in Japanese manga, the font is quite standard (it's no different than any other kind of publication), I don't see why when the mangas are translated into English, they have to take on such childish fonts. Why also, are all scanlation groups adopting the same style as if they didn't have a choice? Anybody out there who feels the same way I do?
