ASA were recently asked to give a recruitment presentation to 2nd year HND hospitality students from City of Glasgow College.
We spoke to the students about recruitment in the hospitality industry; from processes, workforce planning and strategy to preparing for the job market. We were delighted with the lively discussion and interaction the subjects raised.
We have a long standing relationship with the college and sponsor their Food and Hospitality Awards annually, giving out the Student Placement and International Student of the Year awards.
We work together to give hospitality students real life experience in some of Glasgows finest venues allowing them to make professional connections as well as some extra income to help fund their studies. We are very proud to have them working with us to deliver a first class service to our Clients.
The hospitality industry is a fast paced, exciting sector to work in but we are facing a massive skills shortage with demand for staff outstripping supply. We are committed to working with colleges and young people to ensure we are developing Scotlands future industry leaders.
If you would like to speak to us about our great staff please get in touch.

Finders Keepers, Losers Weepers
We all know that the turnover in recruitment is high, but we shouldnt accept the transient nature of the industry as low retention figures are causing growth barriers for a lot of Recruitment Businesses.
ASA recently hosted the 1st #TruEdinburgh Recruitment UNConference, aimed at Recruiters, HR Managers and Internal Recruiters. My track explored retention in recruitment and from the lively discussions we had, I wanted to summarise the key areas to focus on when trying to improve staff attrition.
· We need to improve the quality of internal hires to reduce the churn of disillusioned trainees
· We need to consider key competences which get overlooked resilience, energy and attitude
· Leadership, Company culture, training, pay and benefits are all necessary in an equal balance to retain good recruiters
· Improvements need to be made across the industry improving the incubation phase when recruiting new starts
· A continuous progression pathway aids the retention of experienced talent & rising stars, allowing a mix of employees to thrive at all levels
Recruitment people and businesses need to become better at recruiting Recruiters, we need talented people with the right attitude & an ability to thrive in a performance based culture. Once a business has a critical mass of top performers others will be attracted to that particular business where they too will prosper.
If you want to find out more about a career in Recruitment, please feel free to contact us.

I recently attended the Future of Recruitment conference at the Glasgow Science Centre on the 1st of June, it was an excellent event with great speakers and even better discussions well done Firefish for hosting a brilliant event.
Below is a summary of 4 speakers that I found most engaging;
Greg Savage The Savage Truth
The witty Australian with a proven history of opening & running global recruitment companies.
Greg delivered his views on the recruitment sectors future and the impact social media is having. To be an effective recruiter and successfully run a recruitment business, social media must be embraced. He emphasised the hard work it takes to build a social media profile, but its importance in the modern world of recruitment.
Kai Murray Kai Consultancy
Kai previously spent over 10 years as MD of Search Consultancy
Kai Murray gave a very informative piece on how to grow your recruitment business, giving advice about the key stages of growth and the difficult hurdles that come with it.
Bill Boorman TruMunity
The man in the hat
Bill hosted a master class on networking and stressed the importance of being a prominent member of your community. He encouraged us to be more willing to give to our networks without the expectation of getting something in return.
Johnny Campbell Social Talent
CEO of Social Talent, the worlds leading provider of online recruitment training
Johnny brought the day to a close and with his team of resourcing ninjas, gave an excellent insight and demonstration into the capabilities of sourcing via social media.
Overall, a recruiters core skill is to engage both parties using our knowledge and influencing skills, this hasnt and wont change we just need to become more effective using more relevant mediums.
The Future of Recruitment was well attended and it was great to see this type of event being held in Glasgow. It has given me the opportunity to stop and think about my own skill set and plan a more effective social media strategy.
Definitely a worthwhile event and look forward to attending next year.

ASA would like to thank all our attendees and speakers who really brought the #TruEdinburgh Recruitment UNConference to life.
We had an overwhelmingly positive response from the attendees, they especially liked the format of the event. With 3 tracks running at the same time, guests were able to mix and match their day to their own specification. By having 3 smaller groups of around 20 people max in each track, it meant attendees were comfortable enough to engage in candid discussion. This is a format we will be keen to replicate at upcoming events.
We had 18 great tracks from an impressive line-up of speakers including the REC, Recruitment Matters, Indeed and Firefish to name a few. Check out our video to get a real feel for the event.
ASA had two tracks that were led by our Regional Directors, Matthew Brown and Ian McHardy. Matthew held a very popular track on ‘Values in Recruitment’ and Ian focused on ‘Retaining Staff.’ We will get their summaries from the event up on the website soon.
In the meantime, check out Wendy McDougall, the CEO of Firefish’s great review of the event. Or Tsen Wharton, Founder of OpusPro also summarised his day which gives great insight into how the event runs. John Rose, MD from Resourceful in.UK, also shared his takeaways from the day and why he attends #tru events.
If you would like to know about our upcoming Unconferences or any other events please let us know.

Appraisals have been done, the new financial year has started and according to IIP, 49% of the UK workforce will be looking to move jobs in 2016. Many people avoid looking for a new position as it can be quite an arduous task finding something appropriate, giant applications, getting time off for interviews, rejection etc. We have listed some things you can do to get started to make finding a new job as painless as possible.
1. Social media Sense check
What does your online self say about you? According to a CareerBuilder study, 60% of employers use social networking sites to research applicants, up from 52% in 2015 and 11% in 2006. However thats not to say you shouldnt be on these sites 41% also said that they were less likely to interview applicants if they were unable to find information on them online. Social Networks are constantly updating their Ts&Cs, if you want your profiles to remain private, now is a good time to check your privacy settings. You should also peruse your historical posts, your views then, may not reflect your views now.
2. Linkedin
87% of Recruiters use Linkedin in their recruitment process, so it can be a great tool to showcase yourself, if you can be found. Its not just about completing your profile, you need to add relevant skills and use keywords associated with the role youre looking for throughout your profile. You should be part of groups that are industry and location specific. By updating your profile with searchability in mind, you will be found much easier.
3. CVs are not dead!
Linkedin may be good for showcasing your talents but most employers and Recruiters still want to see CVs. Rather than update the CV youve had for the past 7 years, you should compile a new one. We have different types of CVs for roles in different sectors at various levels for you to review. Online tools, such as myperfectcv.co.uk, allow you to simply choose your CV design and insert pre-written examples of your experiences, generated depending on the sector and discipline you have chosen. These online tools are great for inspiration, but remember, the more specific and tailored to the vacancy, the more likely you are to stand out.
4. Recruitment Companies
Vacancies are advertised everywhere, on job boards, Linkedin, Indeed, Social Media, company websites etc. you need to be proactive on each to discover whats in the market. By signing up with a Recruitment company, they will do the searching for you and often have access to positions that are not available on the open market. They can also give you a good indication of the salary and availability of jobs you are looking for. According to the Recruitment Industry Trends Survey, 634,000 were placed into permanent roles by a Recruiter in 2014/15.
Deciding to look for a new job can be a daunting task but if you take time to prepare, you will be giving yourself the best chance to land your dream role. If you would like more information or to register with ASA, please do not hesitate to contact us.

ASA recently hosted the 1st #TruEdinburgh Recruitment UNConference, aimed at Recruiters, HR Managers and Internal Recruiters.
I hosted a healthy session surrounding the importance of values when working in a recruitment role. Before the event I looked at 12 successful recruitment companies values and 31% had integrity and ethics as a value. The group agreed that integrity and honesty were crucial to a healthy working environment and ensuring an excellent customer experience for both Clients and Candidates.
The discussion focused on the importance of embedding values under the skin of a recruitment business. It was agreed that this was more important than being visual on a website or written into a company handbook. Values should be promoted within a business to ensure they are a followed, so staff live and breathe them.
Our group thought that if engaged Recruiters believed in the company values and these were championed in the business through incorporating them into KPI targets etc. this would be a key way to demonstrate living them.
At ASA we try to embed our values throughout, letting them influence all elements of the business from; engaging staff to decide the initial values; our induction process; how we conduct our appraisals and having values champions within the business.
In a competitive industry like recruitment your values can set you apart from the competition, so taking some time to establish these in your organisation is vital.

Our favourite night in the Hospitality calendar is over once again and what a fantastic evening it was. Held at the Glasgow Hilton, the CIS Awards showcases the excellent talent and rewards the individuals, teams and companies who all give so much to Scotlands Hospitality sector.
Unsurprisingly the food was exceptional, a mouth-watering 4 course menu delivered by Derick Donaldson and his team from the Glasgow Hilton the seared black king fish and ceviche being my personal favourite.
The event was hosted by BBC Scotland’s Catriona Shearer and Radio Forth DJ Grant Stott with the 16 awards being announced over the course of the evening. Alongside PIDY, I presented the Banqueting & Events Chef award to Craig Gibb from The Orde Food Company. Craig was a worthy winner, a young Chef who demonstrated a real passion for his role with excellent knowledge of local produce and suppliers.
The Young Chef of the Year was awarded to Adam Newth from the Tayberry restaurant and the Patisserie Chef of the Year to Ross Sneddon from the Balmoral. It was noted by the judges that the calibre of all of the nominees in these categories was excellent and both winners were young Scottish Chefs who both were working at top establishments and demonstrating real skills and knowledge – Great news for the industry and emerging talent.
Bruce Sangster was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award, a fitting tribute to somebody who has worked at the highest standard for a number of decades and still works in the kitchen of his Michelin star restaurant in Fife – a real inspiration for all of the young Chefs receiving awards and in attendance on the night.
ASA are proud sponsors of the CIS Awards and my involvement with the advisory board in the judging process highlights the exceptional talent in the industry and across the Scottish Hospitality sector. Both ASA and I would like to congratulate all of the finalists and winners on the night see you next year.

Social Care is a demanding and challenging industry, those who work in the sector require a great amount of resilience and dedication. At ASA we aim to give our healthcare staff the skills and experience required to excel in this environment. We invest in high quality classroom based learning, alongside hands on experience with healthcare equipment. To ensure we have the best people working with us, our staff also;
Our 2 highly experienced trainers teach a wide range of courses including; Moving and Handling, Medication Awareness, Challenging Behaviour, Dementia Training, Personal Hygiene, Personal Safety, Food Hygiene, Epilepsy and Adult Support Protection to name but a few.
You have probably come across courses that only consist of an online test, however at ASA we believe it is not enough to simply carry out a theory based online examination. Our staff are trained in a classroom on theory, with the bulk of the course being a hands on practical session using up to date healthcare equipment. We ensure our staff have the knowledge, skills and safe practices which are all crucial aspects to caring for vulnerable people, one of our trainers, Nurse Anne McNeil explains why;
It is more focused on specific subjects and gives the individual the opportunity to discuss any concerns they may have in the workplace relating to the role. It encourages team building, face to face interaction and ensures attendees understand the importance of compliance requirements. The practical assessment also gives us the opportunity to confirm that the attendee can perform specific tasks to an acceptable level.’
We have great trainers at ASA, but dont take our word for it, check out some of our feedback:
The course was really enjoyable due to the trainer making it pleasant, fun and really explanatory.
One of the best courses I have been on.
Best moving and handling I ever attended (I did no less than 6 in the last 10 years).
Excellent trainer, very enthusiastic, professional in delivery, appearance and materials. Enjoyed the training, was dreading it at first.
The course is a great refresher especially if you dont use the hoist regularly.
If you would like to find out more about the complimentary training we provide for our Healthcare staff, please get in touch.
